2024-25 Coaching Carousel

That piece about the Wazzu QB entering the portal as part of the deal is so dumb. I highly doubt that it was part of the discussion at all other than “do you think he would come with you?” They can’t force the kid to do anything and he can say he’s coming to Utah but if someone wants to start a bidding war for him, I doubt Utah wins it

Bobby Petrino is one of the finalists for the UNC-Charlotte job. Brewster is also still in the running along with NC State DC Gibson.

Arizona announced Brent Brennan is being retained. Probably not trending in the right direction when you have to announce you aren’t firing your 1st year head coach.

Just wait and see where Fifita decides to play next year.

I feel like UCF is a sneaky good job. They have to be happy Malzahn left

Agree. UCF has a huge enrollment and is located in a FB hotbed. Don't know anything about their NIL options. I believe they lose a ton of starting production to NFL/graduation (I don't know about guys having an extra RS, injury RS, or Covid season), however last year in B-12 recruiting they finished 3rd in HS and 3rd in TP. There is some talent on their roster. I sort of felt their season mostly came down to coaching and QB difficulties, probably not indicative of poor overall talent on the roster. Last two seasons were not good, but before that they won 9 games twice in the ACC prior to entering B-12. 6-7 last season, then 4-8 so the ax fell. If they hire the right coach and do not have to completely flip their roster, they may become a good B-12 soon. Correct: "right coach will find UCF is a sneaky good job." Rich Rod comes to mind off the top of my head (O set up for some spread option-so that fits), however I'm sure there many other qualified HC candidates to be considered.

Another factor in GM's move to FSU is whether Malzahn brings players with him. I think GM is generally well liked by players and coaches, so if the trust is not broken, they may consider FSU. An too early outside prediction is 5-12 guys may go with him to FSU. I gave a wide range, since I don't know FSU's positions of need, where UCF's individual talent that could plug in immediately in their 2-deep lies, how quick/agressive UCF will be with their next hire, and UCF to FSU is not a huge move geographically. If UCF acts slowly, a bunch of their roster may bolt.

I had the exact same thoughts last night. The Tucson papers summed up the season a complete disaster and Brennen's seat warming. Can McMillan go pro, or is he required to stay in CFB one more year? Perhaps, this will be a package deal again as Fifita and McMillan have played together since 8th grade. I would love McMillan at CU. Fifita I'm 50/50% on him working out at CU. He is gamer, has experience, but on the smaller side. Prime and Co. would have to put some thought into this, as to whether they have enough to protect smaller QB's next season. Juju (more talent but True Frosh) and Fifita (more experience w/ less talent) could be a decent 1-2 punch. kNU started Raiola last season as True Frosh, and his numbers really tailed off the 2nd half of the season--probably the long season and pounding just took it's toll. kNU won only 1 away conference game against Purdue.

Another Cat to keep an eye on is Tacario Davis (CB). He looks NFL bound, however had injury problems the 2nd half of season. If he cannot combine well, he might decide to portal and play an extra CFB year in getting healthy. It could be risky for CU, as he could be injured through spring and/or fall ball and only get healthy very late, then decide to shut it down.

I'm keeping an eye on Washington and USC. UW was 6-6, but 0-5 on the road. They were blessed with 7 home games. There may be considerable TP movement on this team. It would be wierd, but Fifita and McMillan may do a package deal reuniting with Fisch. Who knows? USC appears to be a dumster fire, so I see some players bolting.

McMillan is gone to the NFL...he's a junior and I think he's a first rounder.

There has been talk of Fifita going to Utah but that was before the talk of the Washington State OC going to Utah with the WSU QB in tow. As for Fifita to Washington, I'm not sure about that since the UW coach took UA's QB pledge from last year with him to Seattle.

Fifita to CU would be a nice insurance policy on JuJu...people need to remember he will still be 17 years old when the 2025 season starts.

Yeah, sooooooo top 20, give or take a few spots depending on your criteria. I don’t think it’s debatable that it’s a better job than CU under normal circumstances, if for nothing else than recruiting grounds.

UNC has a ton of local support, a good booster network, and somewhat fertile recruiting grounds (especially compared with somewhere like Colorado).

The bigger issues:
  • Football is viewed by a lot of the fan network as something to while away the time between August and the start of basketball season- the true sport there
  • Unrealistic expectations with where they are in the NCAA pecking order- they want to think they're a top 25 program, but more realistically are a top 40 program. a nuanced but significant difference.
  • Yes, there is a lot more talent in NC than states like Colorado- however, there are 4 P4 football programs in the state, with three more in easy driving distance all competing for the same recruits

Yes, I also think it is a little absurd that Day may get fired, but it seems like both sides would be better off with a change.
I have thought it was insanity to part ways with Day but with that roster and what transpired on Saturday, I have to agree that a change is needed.

Day staring off in space while his team brawls at mid field should tell you everything you need to know with him currently.

Why wouldn’t they hire Scott Frost? Seems like he would be interested in rehabbing his reputation and could hit the ground running. AllBuffs would love having him in the conference.
