Norvell revamps deal. Gives 4.5M to revenue sharing obligations and other efforts. . I think this begins to happen more frequently, especially survival mechanism for hot seat ciaches. .

Is this an upgrade for him?

Good question on Eck. It could go either way--New Mexico has not really had a winning season since 2014. As a program they are spotty to say the least--tough place to win for many decades. Much will depend on how the realignment works with them staying in Mtn. West, other teams headed to Pac8. NM may find a niche and be very competitive there.

NM has had some good coaches survive and get fired but land on their feet (Locksley), but others like Bob Davie (old ND coach) have initial success then fired and not to be heard from since. Rocky Long had the most success 2002-07, then he had success at SDSU. Danny Gonzales flailed over 4 seasons (started during Covid), although he had a solid resume as a DC, with close recruiting ties, and was a NM grad. This year they were 5-7 w/ major rebuild under Bronco. If they did not lose close games to Wyoming or @Hawaii they would be bowling. I feel Bronco's move was a lateral to Utah State, but he had personal reasons for that move.

It's not lateral for Bronco. Pac-12 is a path to the playoffs. MWC is likely not any more.

Regarding Eck, it's a step up with more resources. But I don't know if program resources relative to the other members of his conference rivals will be better than what he had at Idaho - and that's the key to being successful.

One thing I do know that really soured Bronco on UNM is that the final home game vs a ranked WSU with bowl eligibility still in play drew an empty stadium. Almost no one was there for that huge win. Between that, his AD having left and the MWC significantly downgrading, he got the hell out of ABQ as a job that looks like a career killer.

I'm glad to see that Vick continues to work with young people as a mentor, passing on the wisdom from the tough lessons learned.

Most guys would just have done their community service minimum, but Vick seems to have taken things to heart and is making a difference.

One of the best athletes I've ever seen and was a human highlight reel. Did things that were not supposed to be doable on a football field. It's cool to be able to admire him for more than that. I hope he has success as a coach.

I grew up watching Vick and is the entire reason I love all ATL professional sports. I couldn’t be happier for him. If he gets the job, I will be a sac state fan for sure.

He’s a perfect example of rehabilitation if you actually put forth the effort.

@Buffnik you could be right. Bronco's move seemed more lateral since many teams move the same that he had played against--a minimal conference jump at best.

Going forward, I think The Group of 5 spot will be heavily contested. After some years, the reformed Pac-8/12 may provide NM and other teams a better path. Boise State is the best out there, and I don't think WSU and OSU should not fall too hard, however WSU AD in deep red to pay for stadium. If Cal and Stanford bolt ACC for PAC12 (doubtful and expensive) that would bolster the conference nudging them ahead. So much depends on how fast the MW or P12 reach 10-12 decent teams and with whom. Boise is definitely the best P-5, this is their 1st PO.

As I see things now, the G-5 contends with an undefeated or good one loss team. Each G-5 has some contenders: AAC (Tulane, Memphis, Army/Navy): new P-8 (Boise, CSU, Fresno, WSU, OSU can all contend but beat eachother too), remaining MW (UNLV, Air Force, NM, SJSU may not be too bad--a good team could run the table here). I could forsee UNLV or Air Force making runs again. And NMSU may join. I think this should enhance College FB within the state of NM.

I did not see any UNM/WSU highlights but an empty stadium, is never a good thing. Perhaps, were the students on T break? Football in New Mexico is a tad strange. They have decent High School and pop warner teams and coaches, however the great players get pulled to Phoenix, Las Vegas, even Cali/TX into those private HS'. For NM's pop./size, they are excellent in baseball

G5 auto bid is almost certainly going to come from the Pac, AAC or Sun Belt every year. If UNLV dominates the new MWC, they could potentially crash that party, but I predict they will be leaving for the AAC at some point or Pac.

There is no rules anymore. This is coaches paying players.

Air Force and UNLV (who will likely move as soon as they get free from Nevada) are both fine for now. You can recruit to UNLV for obvious reasons, and they probably upgraded with the Dan Mullen hire. Air Force will wind up in the American because Army and Navy are already there eventually-but that's a league that will now be dominated by them and UNLV. If you give Troy Calhoun a senior laden team (like the one he had in 2023) and a game or two against a badly coached power 4 team a year (think Arizona or somebody like them-I'm not at all advocating we play them again, though the 2019-2022 series served its purpose), they can contend for the CFP.
