Alamo Bowl - Colorado vs. BYU—Dec 28— 5:30 PM—ABC

Went to the Alamo in 2016, where my daughter lives - still lives, and now actually works for the city. Apparently they really want to replace it, but without a full time tenant, that ain't easy.

As for the Buffs: Offense comes down to a few things, in order:
  • QB to receivers - we are good.
  • QB handoffs to RBs - we suck
  • QB scrambles - not working for us. At this time.
  • QB to tight ends - non-existent
  • QB to fullbacks - non existent
We're good at one of the five essential (in my view) elements on offense.

We got our asses kicked on the offensive line today, which is a big part of why it was a really bad day. Defensive rebuilding - totally different post. Whisky calls.

I'm not sure we looked smooth for a while game, but we had plenty of drives, quarters, and halves that were smooth
Tonight, well, last night we were totally disorganized and didn’t seem like we had any sort of game plan. It was as if, after our final game, the coaches said, “Okay fellas. Great season. Once we hear where our bowl game is we’ll send you the details and see ya there. We aren’t sure who we will be playing but we are way more talented than anyone. A couple of walk throughs and we should be good to go. See ya in a couple of weeks.”

My impression is they moved into media and party mode. Heisman, flying out 50 teammates, fancy plane to SA, big secret Santa, normal bowl festivities, incoming freshman at practice (maybe normal also).

I'm not even sure all that is wrong to do, but the team was not in focused and not in football mode.

We have seen lots, maybe even a plurality, of CFB teams in bowl games with the same problem.

I'm bummed because bowls have been so rare for CU, but also not going to sweat it much.

Isn’t UTSA a full time tenant?

I think my biggest frustration all year was that, while we had a statistically good offense, it seemed like we were fighting for every single yard/point. Outside of UCF, how many times did we truly look smooth?
It's hard to be one deminsional and look smooth. If you can't run block, none of your backs are starting quality Big XII backs, and your TE play is horrid, it kinda puts you in a passing situation and makes it difficult on your pass pro which has been good most of the 2nd half of the season but was awful today.

Then you add your QB is an elusive pocket passer. While he can create magic, he can also run into a sack. All in all, as anyone will tell you, you want to make a team one dimensional. That's the best way you can beat a team.

While Smalls does give us a different element as a TE than Mikey, you can make a case for him over Mikey even if he's no good.

I don't see a case for Welch, Hayden, or 29 over Hank, Wilkerson, or Edwards. Zero case. I'll give them Alto. The injuries ruined him

lol at the idea that Shedeur is actually calling the plays without a play sheet and going off straight memory.

Offense might look different next year but it will be because Shurmur had a directive this year, not because they let 2 call all the plays. That’s silly.
Yep! Some of these posts after a loss is egregious. This is Pat offense. Yes, 2 has a lot of checks and commands but the plays from directly from Pat. Playcalling wasn't the issue tonight. It was the OL got whooped. It didn't help most of the WRs had a stinker too.

Our offense all year has been pretty much one dimensional. Works well when we out athlete people. But lack of a rushing game has been a glaring weakness of this team. I not sure I would say Shedeur is well-coached, but he does have elite talent. I hope at the next level he can evolve into a more complete QB. You cannot just drop back and attempt to throw down field every play. I hope whomever drafts him looks at what it takes to develop a successful QB (a good Offensive Coordinator will help).

Travis Hunter has been a joy to watch. I am so sorry his era is over.
It's a lot easier in the NFL for him than it will be in college. He's responsible for 82% of his offense as a pocket passer is the most insane **** I've ever heard of. That's Cam Newton percentage in college and he uses his legs. Sanders has negative rushing yards for his career. James voted for Shedeur for Heisman because he said he never seen anyone do what he's doing. He's right. Pocket passers don't do this. They just don't.

This is one deminsional every game. Every game, two high safeties. Defenses disguising coverages. I went back and watched both seasons of Joe Burrow at LSU. First year, good tape but when he was asked to do too much, he struggled. Then I watched his senior year. A lot of 11 personnel, spamming doubles. Justin Jefferson might literally be the goat slot College WR. His TE was constantly open. When teams decided to play two safety high, CEH would tear their ass up. They had an excellent run blocking scheme. CEH was an elite receiving back. Chase might have been one of the best WRs we ever seen in college football. It has easy.

This **** Shedeur is doing is extremely hard. Go watch Cam Ward 1st half. See how much time he had in the pocket. Then watch Shedeur. Now our OL got their ass kicked so it's not really fair but the first sack, 2 seconds. The sack we all got pissed for 2 not just taking the sack and giving Mata a short FG, less than 2 seconds. There was many more where he actually made the play. There was a safety blitz where he saw him, tried to do his spin and spinned his ass right into the sack. That one was on him but of course, Mayers missed his block but 2 should have thrown that one away.

That said, the NFL is going to be easier for him. When you are on these teams like Matt Ryan and Boston College or Colorado and Shedeur, the NFL has more balance at every position. You aren't going to have walk on true freshman being your best OL in a game in the NFL. Even if a guy struggles, he's still a lot better than a college kid who's not there yet.

No more Alamo Bowls.
Hell, we might as well turn down an Alamo Bowl invite in the future.
0-4 and outscored 129-45 in last 3!
Hopefully someday we’ll be able to see a positive end to a season.
2004 last bowl win, 1996 last major bowl win.

a really painful lesson, in the education of CP and his staff.

With much kindness in my heart, I think CP, his staff and many players drank the Koolaid

They put too much emphasis, and relied too much, on the "I believe" mantra.

After steady progress and a 45 -0 season ender, they thought we were aces, home free against byu, and did not do the game planning and prep necessary. I read that SS at one point complained to CP, they were doing too many bowl 'activiteis' and not practicing hard or long enough.

CP will be a much better coach for us next year.

Go Buffs!

(wasn't it lanning and oregon who did an onsides kick after their 1st score? byu took note, did the same and really hurt our spirit, gained a big advantage. byu took note, but our coaches forgot about it and didn't prepare at all. the special teams coach totally failed the team - although other coaches should have been on it)

I am interested to see how Shedeur does in the NFL. Great talent but I would say coachability is a concern. He didn’t improve one bit in throwing the ball away or taking sacks. In fact it was almost like he was stubborn and unwilling to. He’ll have to change that where he won’t be basically god to his NFL team

These are weaknesses. You have to expect it to be there in the NFL. You would be a fool to not expect it otherwise. You love 2 for his elusiveness but sometimes you gotta take the initial sack or throw the ball out of bounds when the play is blown up. At some point, you just gotta recognize this as a part of his game. That's what scouting reports are for

The Giants have a ****ty OL as well, as will just about any team drafting in the top 3.

Pat offense is zone run focused, very heavy personnel set. You see nothing like it in Colorado offense.

You can say the plays "come from him", Bucky is also arguing on Twitter that this offense is "installed by Pat". But this is not his offense. This is the offense Shedeur wants.

Go watch the Oregon game last year and Nebraska game this year, the scripted plays in the first 2-3 drives are almost identical.

You can't run that with FCS level TEs and a bad run blocking crew and expect to win games. He has Shedeur, the best pocket passer in football. He has Travis Hunter. The best player and 3 other NFL quality WRs and a massive drop off after that.

I saw Tcal video. What do you want Pat to do? Lose games playing his previous style which works in the NFL as you have quality players at every position or play to his strengths?

For even Tcal, there was a lot of stuff JSU ran that we simply couldn't because we couldn't execute it in practice much less the game.

We are still a work in progress. It's taking the trenches longer to catch up but they are getting better, but BYU killed them and Utah should have been a warning for us. We couldn't really do anything against Utah either. Just like this game, it was just big plays. The difference is, BYU offensive line is massively better than Utah this year. Fano couldn't make up the difference for his OL.

What do you want Pat to do?
Don't run 4 wide and pass when it's 4th and 1 when we have 29 who can get some short yardage? Did they even practice that?

I saw Tcal video.
I didn't see Tcal video and I don't need to, I have been saying this ever since the beginning of the season, you can check my conversation history. I pointed this out way before Tcal, it's very obvious.
