Truth be told this business model that DTV has, and to a slightly lesser extent DISH and Cable, is the TV version of a blackberry. You had one because it served some of your needs. You hated it for not being what you wanted and having extra crap you didnt need. And being really dumb at the same time didnt help.
Somewhere out there there is an iPhone like innovator coming for TV and its likely tied to the ever faster speeds we can get at home over the internet. When it happens DTV will be the next blackberry.
Hopefully, more municipalities will fund fiber to the home infrastructure which will enable corporations to lease that fiber and provide ISP and TV services. I'm hoping a Google-type player will do so with an a la carte type TV package, which would effectively kill traditional TV providers in those areas, in my opinion.
My local Buffalo Wild Wings picked up Pac 12 network, I think they carry both Comcast and DirecTV now. (Kinda have to in Utah country). It seems sports bars in the Pac 12 footprint are picking it up if they are at all interested in college crowds. You might be SOL if you're East of the Rockies though.
I wanted to throw out a question that I hope someone might be able to answer. I have been a Dish subscriber for the past year and have really enjoyed watching the PAC-12 network but now I am moving and will be forced into cable. Time Warner/Comcast carries the Pac-12 network but not in my region, so my question is if I subscribe to the carrier and log onto the Pac-12 site with my credentials can I then stream the games? Or b/c I live in an area that is blacked out from the network will I also not be able to watch it online?
I had this exact issue as a Comcast customer in Houston. I was not able to use my Xfinity credentials to stream games from the P12N, despite the fact that Xfinity is a valid carrier of P12N. This is because they do not offer it for distribution in my area. They even gave me free Expanded Sports Tier to see if I could get it then, but it still did not work. This is the issue that caused me to dump Comcast in favor of Dish.
Since I have Comcast as my internet provider, and Direct for my TV, what I do is log into comcast then run a HDMI cable from my laptop to a big screen TV to watch. So if you subscribe to comcast at your new location for internet service, you should be able to do the same.
Damn, this is what I was afraid of but thanks for the info. That is ridiculous that even if you subscribe to a carrier you can't stream the network if you're not in the footprint. Does anyone know if there are plans to offer a streaming package directly through Pac-12 Network any time soon? Back to the drawing board I guess.
Yeah I was planning on doing something similar but due to living outside of the "footprint" I cannot even stream it apparently. Crazy.
I think your only solution is to somehow get Comcast to offer P12N where you live. I made a number of calls to Comcast in hopes of doing that, but clearly I had no pull. At least they knew exactly why I cancelled after being a customer for more than 15 years.:thumbsup:
Not sure my little residential account will have much pull either. I might have to look for a local bar with Dish Network and make it my home away from home on Saturdays. I know of a local watch party but it is in Boston, about an hour trip south of me.

You must have gotten lucky slipping through some crack, not supposed to be able to do that. Must have a TV subscription to stream the network, regardless of ISP.
Hklyw21 - that sucks. The MSO's added a bunch of new territories last year, hopefully they will do it again this summer. Being forced into cable with SAT not being an option, that is the situation I realy empathize with. (vs. those staying with DirecTV)
Yeah, I loved having Dish but the condo assoc has crushed that dream.
Comcast is buying TWC, not sure what effect that will have on the availability of the P12 Network for these providers
I cannot imagine this unholy marriage having any positive effects for anyone except Comcast shareholders.
Borrow someone else's logins or keep your dish account open at the cheapest level possible. Maybe transfer your dish account and equipment to you parents to offset the cost of the bill.
Is this an apartment? I set up a dish in the balcony of our back in the day. Im sure someone will bitch. If your on the south side of the building you can point the dish through a window. Your wife will love you for giving her an aesthetically beautiful place to dry her bras and panties.
Lastly, Im not allowed to post the links because they evil mods will slap my hand, but there are pirate streams out there that are very reliable and very high quality. I use one of them on iPad last season to watch a few games. HD too.

I was able to watch all of our games in HD quality online. It's out there for those with no option. I blame it on pac 12 and cable operators for not getting the deal done.
Apparently, DTV gives no ****s about regional sports networks these days. What a change in direction.

Odd, I thought Direct carried ESPN.
That's going to be a huge fight. The Disney programming has a lot of leverage (Disney, Disney Jr, ABC, ABC Family, 8 ESPN channels, A&E, Lifetime, History, H2, Military History, Bio, Crime & Investigation, probably some more I'm not thinking of). However, they have used that leverage to extort inflated carriage fees while forcing unwanted channels on cable & satellite companies.
If DTV is going to make a stand, this is probably the time.

There was a story a few days ago that they're also threatening not to carry the Dodgers new network. Which only makes good sense to me, but it's going to piss off a lot of people in LA that want to watch the 4th through 6th inning without going to the ballpark.
Its possible DTV has decided to try and tamp down all these one off networks that are popping up. Sooner or later they will run out of bandwidth.
I dont know if thats going to blow up in their faces eventually with all the broad band thats popping up. In theory, SEC/P12 etc could go to an online streaming model that is free and hope to make it on advertising revenue. Something would have to be worked out with comcast, dish, and the other networks that agreed.
This could be the beginning of the end for packaged tv. Though I think that might have gotten going with Netflix.
I read that even Apple recently succumbed to the fact there is no way around bundling. Apple TV was trying their best to "revolutionize" the cable/television industry and now it is looking like they are pretty much going to remain no different than the average "smart tv."
Perhaps bringing PAC12 network to Apple TV along with other singular networks will be the smaller steps that could lead to Apple's bigger plans.

With a war chest of $140B in cash in the bank they could in theory buy that kind of access for appleTV

Im not the only one who feels that they have not done enough with that cash. Apple's history as a market disruptor is now a known quantity; the people in the film and TV business will not as easily let Apple destroy them like it did the music business and the cell phone business. I think they only way an Apple TV works is to buy a content provider. I think they could establish Apple TV by, say, buying the NFL Sunday Ticket rights (like Microsoft is rumored to be doing) and then add Pac 12 Net, Sec Net, and other channels.
Seriously. WTF are they doing with it? Ever since Jobs passed away they've practically gone into hiding. Oh, well there was the release of the innovative and life-changing iPad mini. Is cook just afraid to pull the trigger or take a risk??
Well, that cash represents many things. If you think about it that cash has a tremendous clout in terms of Apples buying power.
Apple was quite famous a few years ago for wiping out inventories of LCD and LED screens because they would go in and sign humungous contracts for huge numbers over multiple years buying up all the available inventory. Those contracts also got them some of the lowest prices too. Tim Cook was very good at negotiating those kinds of deals. It also represents the ability to crush you Mr. Supplier in favor of another supplier if you try to get cute with pricing or supply (Samsung). Its also very beneficial if they do decide to buy another company because they have the cash on hand for any MnA deal. Anyone sitting at the bargaining table knows Apple can pay. I think thats why they keep it there.
In the end I dont think Tim Cook is quite the innovator that Jobs was. Cook was a supply chain/engineering kind of guy thats gonna stay the course. Johnny Ive (physical design and iOS7) might have been the better choice but thats water over the dam at least for now.

That being said, under Cook, Apple's revenues have increased from $108 billion during Jobs last year, to $171 billion in 2013. Annual gross profits have jumped from $45.6 billion at the end of 2011 (Jobs) to over $70 billion at the end of 2013 (Cook).
It will be interesting to see where Apple goes under Cooks' leadership and Ive's design.
