Bowl Games (other than ours) and associated silliness 2024 Plus the Playoffs

Venables cant keep players from transferring. Unless he figures that part out, Texas recruiting doesn't matter.
Not to mention the comparison of going from the Big 8 to Big 12 is not remotely close to Big 12 to SEC. Bob Stoops making the softest handoff in history to Lincoln Riley maintained OU as a power in a weak Big 12. If Venables is just an average HC while they move to a conference that still has Texas but also features Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida (among a few others), they could easily become a perennial 6-6 type program

Venables was a very lazy hire.
Disagree. He was the DC of arguably the best defense in college football for many years. He had ties to OU, and was one of the biggest names in all of college football. He'd turned down other opportunities at HC jobs before OU came calling. Most teams would have hired him on the spot if given the chance.

Did he turn down those opportunities or was it the other way around?

Because there were plenty of rumors the latter was true.

OK. Rumors are rumors. Who knows? Are you going to deny he was the DC for one of the best defenses in college football? I mean, is it a coincidence that Clemson hasn't been as good since he left?

It could be that he's a world class DC and ****ty HC. It's happened a lot before. But I still disagree that his was a "lazy" hire. He was a big name, and if hiring the current big name is lazy, then so be it.

No amount of tortillas can save Texas Tech tonight.

He was a great DC at Clemson and he was a big name for a LONG time. Do you really think Oklahoma in 2023 was the first job he seriously pursued?

I believe a lot of schools kicked the tires and were not impressed. But then in walks a reeling, embarrassed Oklahoma fresh off losing Riley to another program and they went with the "obvious" choice, especially since he had deep ties to Stoops.

I understood the hire. I understood getting excited after him rebounding from the first year hot seat when he had a really good season last year. But the extension was premature and unnecessary.

Alright, it's a 5-point game at halftime in the Liberty Bowl. First half was weird. Who would you guys put your money on to win this one? I'm kinda thinking Tech...but I don't really have a ****ing clue here.

Many knew he was not HC material.

I agree with you that it was lazy.

They wanted a name that the boosters would know. With the way that Riley left the program (and the guys who either followed him or just left for other places) and coming into the SEC without a roster built for SEC football it was a less attractive job than OU normally would be.

Venables was a very good DC but you may be very right about other schools not being enthusiastic about hiring him.

He knows football, especially defensive football, but can he manage a program? His results the last couple years would say no. I also wonder if he has the energy and enthusiasm, and the personality needed to recruit at a top level in 2025 college football.

The Jimmys and Joes are more important than the Xs and Os. Having talent at Oklahoma shouldn't be an issue but when I have seem them this year they haven't been impressive and the exodus through the portal doesn't help.

Today they had a game where even with the transfers out they should have had a significant talent advantage and it showed with them jumping out to the big lead.

It then looked like like at the first adversity it looked a lot like the Sooners flat quit. You can excuse losing to a better team but when your team plays like they don't care you have big problems. That comes back to Venables (although I think it actually may have started under Riley who hasn't exactly looked like the great motivator at USC.)
