Bubble Watch - Saturday 3/12

Not quite yet. ODU and VCU will meet in the tourney final. We really, really, really need ODU to win that one.

Correct, because Lunardi already had both ODU and George Mason in the tournament in last night's bracket. So as long as ODU wins the CAA tourney, no harm done.

Thank heaven this wasn't the final today. ODU is really good this year - they've beaten Clemson, Xavier, Richmond. Only lost to Georgetown by 3. Split season series with VCU, who is pretty solid in their own right. Rams beat UCLA this year

Indiana State beating Missouri State hurts CU, because I am pretty sure Missouri State is already in and some argue that Wichita State should be in too...if the MVC takes 3 bids that will hurt CU

Funny thing in Virginia is that G. Mason, Old Dominion, Richmond (and quite possibly VCU) are all better than VT and UVA right now.

MVC will be a one-bid conference luckily, despite Missouri State's high RPI. MVC won't be a two-bid league as it's the 12th ranked conference.

Missouri State doesn't have an impressive resume'. They only played one top 50 RPI team this year (lost to Tennessee). Their best wins were 2 over Wichita State and 1 against Indiana State (who beat them twice). Lunardi had them as a #12 seed prior to today. I don't think they've got much of a shot at an at large.

Wichita St. has no chance of getting in and there resume is better then Missouri St's. Indiana St. winning wont matter. It will be a one bid conference.

VCU is better than them and James Madison might be also.

...and we all know JMU is better than VT in football

Btw BuffinVA: you aren't the guy who started singing "Fight CU down the field..." behind me in the drive-thru at McDonald's in Richmond a year or two back upon seeing my CU sticker, are ya? haha - Go Buffs

the old Sun Belt Conference with ODU, UAB, Jacksonville, South Alabama, VCU....was a fun conference to watch. one of the first ESPN conferences along with the Big East.

Metro Conference after that with VT, FSU, VCU, Charlotte and others was good too. Hard to believe VT was in the Metro-Conference until 16 years ago, then A-10, then Big East, then finally their dream -- the ACC. What a rise they've had both athletically and academically, and the older alumni are loving it and reaping the benefits.

16 years ago, are you sure that's right? I just looked and it said they joined the BE in 1991. Or was that for football only at the time? And where were they in football before the Big East, independent?

Big East only allowed them to be a football-only member until 2000, when they joined in all sports. They were Metro in basketball until they joined the A-10 in '95. They were independent in football before joining the Big East in '91, having been rejected for admission to the ACC in both '65 and '77

No that wasn't me. That's funny though.

Good info, I didn't realize they hopped around so much in basketball. Speaking of VT and the state of Virginia, we drive across Virginia on 81 once in a while on our way up to New York and that whole Shenandoah Valley area is really gorgeous country.

Shenandoah Valley is definitely gorgeous. That's a hell of a haul you have to make up 81 though, no road is as bad w/ 18 wheelers as I-81, as I'm sure you know! I'm from Charlottesville, when you hit the 81/64 interchange in Staunton, it's 30 miles east right over the mountains. You should make a detour sometime - with the Downtown Mall being designed by the same guy as Pearl Street, University of Virginia, and it being right up against the Blue Ridge Mtns - it's the closest thing you'll find to Boulder in the East. Great for a day trip to see Monticello and the town. Are you in NC or SC?

Yea we catch 81 at I-77 and we're in VA for about 5 hours or so, and the thing is 81 goes another hour or so west in VA down to Bristol. For VA not being all that big of a state it's funny that you can drive about 6 hours thru that state on 1 interstate. And yes there is alot of 18-wheelers on 81, but overall that road isn't all that busy, nothing like 95. I'm in NC. I've heard Charlottesville is a very nice town, but as far as comparisons to Boulder, Asheville is pretty close except it's not a college town (UNCA is tiny).

It's a weird area down by Bristol - Vol Country down there, not far from Knoxville at all. I remember when the Hokies and Vols were attempting to play the "biggest football game ever" or something at Bristol Motor Speedway. Guess that never worked out...

Thomas and Julius Jones came out of that most SW corner of Virginia (Big Stone Gap). Think one of the parents may have even worked in Knoxville...

All of those truckers are coming out of Cali and Texas heading to the Northeast. I use to be one of them.

That would've been pretty cool actually to have to those teams play at Bristol, and there's no doubt that those 2 fan bases could've sold 165,000 seats between them. I need to get up there for a race sometime, looks like an awesome place.

Last year I took a detour from CO to VA to see some areas of the country I hadn't been to - took I-25 down to Las Cruces and got on I-10 and went across Texas and Louisiana, then cut up through Mississippi to Alabama and got on I-81. Let's just say it took me a hell of a lot longer than I expected. I will never do that 880 miles across TX again.

The good news is they're going to widen I-81 throughout VA

Cool in theory - but 165k Vol and Hokies? mehh no thanks ;)
I'd love to catch a race there. Not a racing fan, but I caught a race at RMS a few years ago and had a blast

Edit: I was just reading more about the proposed VT/Tenn in Bristol. The owner of the Speedway offered $20 million to each to play there in front of 150k+. Virginia Tech was dying to do it, but Tennessee wanted no part of it. Vols have a history of avoiding VT at all costs...

Yea I guess that would be quite the party with 165K Vols and Hokie fans.

You're referring to Bruton Smith, who is CEO of Speedway Motorsports and they own a number of NASCAR tracks around the country including Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bristol, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway, and some others. A few years ago he wanted to build a drag strip near Charlotte Motor Speedway on land he owned and was already zoned for motorsports, but there were complaints from a small housing development. He told the city of Concord - OK fine, I'll buy some land elsewhere in the Charlotte area and move my speedway. Fast-forward to now, the dragstrip has been built, and what used to be Speedway Blvd here in Concord has been renamed Bruton Smith Blvd. I guess all that revenue from 2 NASCAR races in May and 1 in October, plus the NHRA events, was too much to turn down.

You really are in the capital of racing down there. Or close at least - isn't Kennapolis the technical center of the racing universe? ;) I like the Charlotte area - Charlotte does a great job of putting on that bowl game (whatever it's called now). ACC tournaments in Charlotte are also great. Definitely a transforming city - Charlotte doesn't get quite so dead at night/on weekends like it used to not so long ago. Unfortunately given the relative proximity/similar name, my bags have taken a couple unexpected trips to Charlotte while flying over the years.

Kannapolis is where Dale Earnhardt is from but there's not much up there except for this big medical research center on the site of what used to be Cannon Mills, maybe that's what you're thinking of. Concord is a huge race hub, alot of the major race teams like Hendrick, Ganassi and Rousch are located here in Concord, plus NASCAR has an R&D facility in Concord and Charlotte Motor Speedway is also in Concord. And alot of the race teams and their crews use Concord regional airport. A few other race teams like Joe Gibbs are up in the Huntersville/Mooresville area about 30 miles north of Charlotte.

Charlotte has pretty much lost out on most of the ACC tournaments to Greensboro but it looks as though the ACC football championship may have found a permanent home in Charlotte. I guess it took the ACC brass 4 years to figure out that Jax and Tampa weren't ideal sites for the ACC Championship game.

Gotcha, interesting.

Definitely agree that Charlotte is where the ACCCG needs to be. ACC schools aren't exactly known for their traveling, with a couple exceptions. Should be interesting to see what happens in VA over the next few years - UVA has a second year coach with deep ties to the Tidewater. If this past recruiting class is any indication, VT's decade long post-Vick domination of the 757 is over. UVA has broken back into areas such as Hampton and Newport News that are loaded with top D1 talent. As for basketball, UVA has a great young coach in Tony Bennett (hired from Wazzu). They'll be back starting next year. They're a basketball school at heart, anyways. Beautiful new 15k arena. Fair chance our Buffs could be playing VT in Dayton here in 10 days

VT and Clemson of course travel very well, and UNC and NC State can travel decently. The ACC got lucky last year with VT being in the CCG because the Hokies have a huge fanbase in this area and their campus is only 3 hours from Charlotte, but even being in Charlotte this game will not be a success if someone like Miami and BC are in that game. I think the ACC made a big mistake in adding BC. I realize they were going after the BC market but that area is pro-sports dominated and on the college level it's still Big East country.

That's good to hear that UVA will be back in basketball, it'll be nice to see unc and Duke get some competition in this conference. Although I like Duke just because represent the anti-unc. It has really hurt the conference that programs like NCSU, GT, Maryland and UVA are down. NCSU has done absolutely nothing under Lowe, if he's not gone after next week I'll be shocked.
