Bubble Watch - Saturday 3/12

Our biggest concern right now isn't bubble teams winning a game or two, it's slots for the tournament disappearing with surprise winners of conference tournaments. Cross your fingers for ODU to beat VCU here tonight (starts 5pm) or the tournament just got one spot smaller. I put CU's chances with 1 win in KC at no better 50% right now, and that will go down if tourney spots start going to "cinderellas".

Play in game against Boston College and winner plays Georgetown. I think we can take BC... Georgetown would be tough

Buffs can beat BC for sure, but it would be a very close game. Georgetown isn't all that unfavorable, they're really struggling, although I believe they have an injured star player who will be back for the Dance. They are a Big East team which means they're physical, but the Buffs would have a punchers chance

actually looking at the Hoyas. This is a relatively down year for them. They are square in the middle of the Big East. Could be a decent draw for us. However the third round would be against Purdue. That would be a slaughter in Chicago however they have been prone to a few upsets this season. Who knows it could be interesting.

Don't know about you guys, but I'd be more than content with Second Round and an upset of Gtown along the way.

SI now has in in as well.... This time in a San Antonio region playing va tech

Interesting. I've seen VT many times this year and they're just not very good. I don't care that they beat Duke, they're even more inconsistent than the Buffs are. In terms of common opponents, they've beaten Okie State and lost KSU. Catching Vanderbilt would be something of a break, Commodores are pretty good but they've got some questionable losses in the SEC. That's the thing -- being a 12 or 11 seed isn't a bad deal. The play-in game sucks, but it gives you reasonable games with a chance to win until deep in the tournament when you inevitably hit a 1 or 2 seed. Being an 8 or 9 seed sucks

Sellout crowd of 11k+ for ODU/VCU in Richmond. Great to see the interest and support in some of the smaller conferences, imo. Let's go Monarchs, this is a big game for CU's chances

Court in Richmond has an ice rink under it, looks like they're having some major issues. This could be a repeat of what happened in a UVA/Michigan State game in a huge game in the Richmond Coliseum around 8-10 years ago -- the rink leaked through and they had to cancel the game as it got so out of control slick out there. This looks like the exact same problem...

Games of Interest tonight:

VCU vs. Old Dominion - Need an ODU Win
Gonzaga vs. St. Mary's - Both teams with a nearly identical resume and both could easily get in...probably a bad showing by 1 or the other helps most

Intentional foul on ODU because a VCU player behind an ODU player ran into his elbow. Is this what college basketball is becoming?

Lol eh, they're trying to cut down on players swinging elbows like that because there really isn't a reason for it. I'm for it.

And G'Town doesn't really scare me as much as they should. Back to the basket big men scare me the most but John Thompson's offense is too perimeter based and sucks for back to the basket big men. Their guards and wings are talented, and they would still be the favorite, but I could see us upsetting them simply because they won't abuse us as much as they could/should.

I'm typically for the safety of the players and all that jazz, but we can't do it to the point where it affects and waters down games. Basketball is a more physical game than many think, and I feel it should stay that way. If a player swings his elbows around and hits someone in the face, then an intentional foul is justified. However, in this case the ODU player merely had grabbed the rebound and the VCU player was behind him (out of sight) and ran into his elbow. The refs viewed it and apparently "had to call an intentional". VCU missed the two foul shots for the intentional, which means the basketball gods clearly agree that it was a poor call.

you guys watching this ODU game?

See the VCU player shoot an air ball... catch his own "rebound" and put in the layup? How they counted that, I will never know. Clearly a travel.

Haha, been a lot of airballs in this one. ODU player airballed one of his ft's by about two feet. Make no mistake though, ODU can upset someone in the Big Dance, their post play is impressive. VCU is trying hard to mount a rally here - 46-37 ODU 12 mins left

9 straight stops for VCU. 46-39 ODU under 12 timeout. This was a 19 point game a few minutes ago

Edit: 51-44 ODU. under 8 timeout

I can't believe such bad team is taking our spot.

My friend, there are a lot of bad autobid champs taking better team's spots. Does anybody here seriously believe Tad's previous team - UNoColo - is a better basketball team than his current - CU?

I also wonder... what if CU was a member of the PAC this year, sted next?

And yeah, buffnik, I'm pointing a finger at YOU:lol:: anyone who believes the eventual NIT champ is the 65th-best team in the country needs to turn off his computer and go outside for a walk.
