BYU Game thread. Official.

The biggest failure in CP's era so far is the recruitment & development & management of the CB position. If you tell me, in the beginning, that in year 3 secondary is the weakest position group in this CU team I would be laughing my head off.
He had Travis, DJ, Hodge and Hood in year two and they were banking on three of those four being back for this year. Losing Hood after the Spring left them scrambling in the portal.

To your point, however, outside of Cormani the first year they have essentially neglected the position at the HS level. Feels like maybe he thought they would have their pick of proven P4 CBs in the portal? They lost Alex Graham in last year's class, which hurts the pipeline but did grab Noah King to replace him, essentially.

I'm going to assume DJ is gone after this year, although, depending on how the season goes he might be wise to come back for one more year. Regardless, they need to find 2 proven starters for next year.

I was at the game, and didn't hear the Mormon chant. However, it obviously happened, and is a pretty bad look, and overall disappointing.
Not a great look but definitely not nearly as bad as hurling racial slurs at an opposing team's black players and then pretending it didn't happen.

In fact it was so bad that South Carolina canceled their basketball games with BYU over the incident.

Important to remember that the Book of Mormon contains blatant racism in it, with the founder of Mormonism Joseph Smith describing brown skin as a sign of a curse from God. All religions have their problems and I think it's generally good to avoid hate of any kind though.

But a $50k fine seems insane, did BYU get fined for the racial slurs incident by the MWC?

CP should be the one noticing

1. How big of a loss Travis is, and
2. How much better Hood is than DJ.

That's what I mean by "mismangement".

In fact, Travis is so much better than DJ, even technique wise (let alone the athleticisms), that I find it hard to believe he thinks DJ is capable of replacing Travis as CB1.

I have hard time believing that. Based on his current performance, he is a day 3 pick at best.
That's my point. DJ was viewed as a day one or day two pick coming into the season and has woefully underperformed that. He might opt to come back, ala Preston Hodge.

I don't think he was under any illusion that he could replace Travis with DJ and see no dropoff, but I believe that he truly thought DJ is/was a first round caliber player. DJ's biggest issue has always been being in position but not turning his head to play the ball and therefore either getting a PI penalty or giving up the catch. I imagine CP thought that issue could be fixed.

W/r/t Hood... I know the common thought was that he left because we didn't give his brother a scholarship, but I've heard that simply wasn't the case. He knew he wasn't going to play with his brother when he left and that he really wanted back in the SEC. Right or wrong, CP doesn't try to force these guys to stick around if they don't want to be here.

It's always been a group that lacked depth on CU roster. Whereas, he was strong at it at JSU depth wise. I'll still say LB is the worst by a mile. DJ should be a CB2. The rest are just struggling. This will be fixed. The secondary under Prime at JSU and Colorado has usually been a bright spot but getting raided when he had cancer and losing one of the best in the nation in Colton Hood crippled us and we couldn't steal Boo Carter in the offseason to recover from it.

Our student section doesn't chant anything that doesn't involve the word ****. It gets old really fast
F BYU is one thing - it's the school, the opponent, etc
F Mormons crosses the line for a lot of people. It'd be like chanting F Baptists or F Christians when playing those schools.
The destroying / throwing of the book of mormon was also a bit too far - imagine what people would do if we were playing Baylor and students were throwing bibles on the field.

For once, I'd like to hear the students actually cheer FOR our school, instead of AGAINST the opponent. But that's just the 35 year old in me
I would prefer that they use less of the F word and targeting somebodies religion is not far off from targeting somebodies race, gender, etc.

That said these are college kids, as others have said the same as college kids most places. Colllege kids by their nature are interested in provoking reaction, they always have. Get a group of college kids together and it won't take long for them to find a rule or norm and push it if for no other reason than to see the reaction when they push the rule or norm.

In enough time be it months or years they will either mature out of pushing that particular rule or norm or the rule or norm will have changed and nobody will care any more.

They will push the line on what is considered acceptable dress, speech, use of drugs or alcohol, the music they listen to, etc.

Honestly look back at when each of you were 18-22 years old and I guarantee that most of you had certain things you did knowing that it would draw a negative response from older generations, and that was a part of why you did it, even if you didn't realize your motivations at the time.

Speaking of Boo Carter. A 2026 Safety tandem of Carter and Byard would be nice. Or maybe Carter is more of a Star/NB type. Either way, I heard his mom wanted him at CU in the first place and he wanted to be here this year but it was obviously too late. Hopefully he enters the portal and we can grab him in January

The buddy I took to the game was chanting "F.U.B.Y.U" (just the letters, not "**** YOU BYU"). The old (mid 70's I'm guessing) BYU fan in front of us was a bit perturbed and gave him a long stare. The Cougar kids (early 20's) sitting next to us didn't care at all and we had some good conversations with them.

How much is it because of TH though?

after this season, CP needs to get 1-2 star players from portal and really start getting elite players from the HS. We can all say the LB play/recruiting has been bad because of Hart, but for CP, there is simply no reason we don't have top secondary group in the big12. If that's not the case, CP has nobody else but himself to blame.

Travis only played 1 season and missed half of it with an injury. We were loaded at CB. Had some really good corners. One was drafted by the Patriots.

At bare minimum, this is what CB recruiting needs to look like this year. One guy who is talented enough to compete in the two deep from day one and two others who can be ST guys right away and maybe surprise.

It's actually quite insane that the Big 12 is fining CU $50k for the chants. How is this not a bigger deal? It's ridiculous and I'd be pissed at Yormark if I were RG and CP.
Yormark apparently wants to hold the line against religion bigots in his conference. CU is free to leave if its nose gets out of joint.

I don't disagree that people are soft as ****.

But I also think that "**** BYU" and "**** the Mormons" are considerably different things.

To me, "**** the Mormons" is not really conceptually different than, say, "**** the Jews".

I give two ****s about religion in general, but I know where religious persecution leads. It's different than just hating on your team's opponent.

**** BYU.

They have a running QB and a good coaching staff. They also came into Folsom last year and beat our best team in 20 years. You sure you want to ride or die with us in Manhattan?
Never said that. In fact I said CU would be underdogs. However it is one of the few games they have any chance in what so ever.

I don’t disagree but to fine the university for something they had no control over like they’re the student body’s parents? GMAFB

This times 100. I don't see how anyone could find a chant like that acceptable in any way.

it's pretty embarrassing for me to be associated with that chant and even more so with people who don't condemn it outright. Yikes.

Everybody has condemned it, including the university, RG and Prime. It was a group of students. Fining an institution over the speech of their fans is dumb as ****. Did Yormark fine TTU for throwing tortillas on the field?

The church shooting in Michigan Sunday was a man who hated Mormons shooting and burning down a Mormon church, killing 5. This may be why CU was fined but Arizona was not last year for the same chant.

Parks is an absolutely horrific player. Watching him on the All 22 was like watching a 6th grader try to play in a HS varsity game. Had no idea of alignment or assignment and was so far below the players around in talent that it was embarrassing.
His bite inside on the late TD was just awful technique that I would not expect from a HCP coached CB. However, having no apparent help inside seems odd, too. I don’t recall seeing any, but I could be wrong.

The student section that was chanting should have been ejected from the game. The university failed to act, so I think the fine is appropriate.

Conferences fine universities for things fans do often. Storming the field and throwing things onto the field are just two things I know of recently that have caused fines. Maybe not b12 yet, but it would be a bad look for CU to push back on this fine.

That’s wishful thinking. You can’t physically eject only the students who were chanting it.

A public apology and strong condemnation from the university is as far as it should have gone.

Fines for storming the field are dumb, too, but at least it’s rooted in concerns for actual physical safety.

The point is, monetary fines of the University doesn’t stop field storming, doesn’t stop people from throwing things on the field and it doesn’t stop drunk students from chanting dumb ****.

It's not wishful thinking. You eject the entire section from which the chant is coming. I was in a section in Folsom field that was ejected once.

Sure, but it states that it is clearly unacceptable. **** the...religious group name...should be clearly unacceptable. I get it, drunk college kids will do stupid things. But this crossed a line that shouldn't have been crossed
