BYU Game thread. Official.

1. Yep

2. You are focusing exclusively on WR functions and not critical things like getting separation, run blocking, pass blocking, and just doing your job as a WR. Brown does those things better than Jojo and O at this stage. Sincere is like Will in those areas. He's reliable. That's why even if the production wasn't there, he still was a starter. O and Jojo are still a work in progress in those areas and thats okay. Those two are young inexperienced WRs.
I'll take your word on Sincere. I was probably overstating and I don't have access to the all 22s (or even a replay of the teevee broadcast) so I'm just going off of my drunk live watch which is problematic at best. I'm just a rando message board idiot after all 😇

It's not wishful thinking. You eject the entire section from which the chant is coming. I was in a section in Folsom field that was ejected once.
The argument that there should be no penalty to the school because "the school can't control it" is a cop out.

It may be very difficult to control it, uncomfortable and unpopular with the students or other fans if that applies. It is also though the school's event, at some point the school has to be responsible for what happens at that event.

If the fans were chanting F (name the racial group) of F (insert slur towards LGBTQ+) would we be okay with the school saying "Sorry but we can't do anything about it." How about if the fans were throwing rocks at the field?

The issue is what are things you don't like but are willing to put up with and what things reach a level that makes them unacceptable enough for the school or arganization to go through the discomfort of taking the necessary steps to effectively stop the behavior.

Yeah. It's one thing to have a culture of our fans being assholes (especially the younger ones), but it is a whole other level when it becomes bigoted hate speech. Zero tolerance for that and the punishment needs to be severe enough to force action.

Anyone who was yelling that, particularly the same weekend as a mass shooting at a Mormon church, please take a moment to do some introspection and become a better person.

I feel like we're in an Obama - Katrina timeline here.

The chant by the students was on Saturday night.

The attack on the Mormon church was Sunday morning.

Please explain to me why the students should have known it was terrible to conduct such a chant, checks notes, 12 hours before the hate crime was committed?

On Saturday night, the chant was in bad taste. End of story.

If they had done it Sunday night, you're right, it would have been egregious.

That was not what I was suggesting.

The intent of me posting that was perspective. There is a lot of violence in the world. Thoughts-->Words-->Actions. What we think influences what we say and do. What we say and do influences how others think, talk and behave. Too many of those others are unhinged. The perspective is to not feed a cycle of aggressive religious intolerance because we saw the next day what the consequences of this can all too often be.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if this was almost 100% a case of a bunch of young people getting charged up with the emotions of sports, probably not completely sober, getting caught up in group behavior, and aren't people who actually have hate for members of the LDS church. I would think that most of them look back already and think, "Fun night, but that was not my finest moment." I posted in hope that I could encourage more of that look-back and growth from it.

It really feels like we're right on the edge of many people getting this order of events wrong, and yours is not the only post in this thread that can be read to imply a different sequence of events than what transpired.

I've got $100 that sometime in the next year, someone actually serves up the wrong sequence as "another example" of CU fans being terrible.

Seriously? Are you arguing that "**** the Mormons" was an acceptable chant before the terrorist attack?

It's well within one standard deviation of the norms of our society.

Should it be? No.

But it is.

I'm not going to demand that drunk college students have better than one standard deviation moral behavior.

I'm going to repeat this, because I can see you getting ready for outrage. OUTRAGE I tell you!

It should not be that way.

But it is that way.

I'm gonna get worked up about other problems in our society before I get worked up about this.

FWIW, I'm disappointed (not feeling outrage) and want to make sure that efforts are made to avoid this type of thing happening again.

This. Entirely independent of the attack on the LDS Church the conduct was not appropriate or something that should be allowed to be repeated.

The attack on the church focused more attention on it but with or without the attack steps need to be taken to not have it repeated, or similar out of line actions.

Again this isn't the kind of thing that can just be passed off as "Kids will be kids."

Unfortunately there was the attack on the LDS church following the game. It doesn't change the chants being wrong, it does unfortunately put more urgency on responding and probably reduces the range of options that can be used to prevent it in the future by putting the school's response in the spotlight.

The Big12 and Yormak are a joke. Prime single handedly is holding up the TV ratings for this trash conference, and then you go do something petty like fine CU 50k. Get the **** off my lawn. Both my Mormon friends felt the atmosphere was extremely tame and inconsequential compared to games like the Holy War.

Fortunately this truck stop conference featuring directional and commuter city colleges is just a place for CU to park for a few moments until the final realignment. We will check out any time we like, but they can never leave.

And there in lays one of the problems.

Someone else mentioned outrage.

I am not outraged. Nik put it well with disappointed. But its more than that.

I have two flags hanging off the front of my house. An American Flag and a CU flag. I have two mini CU car flags on my car that get displayed while driving around town. I often wear CU gear. And more importantly, my daughter is a Junior here at CU.

The last thing I want to be associated with, but more importantly the last thing I want my daughter or her education associated with is religious bigotry.

Its flat out embarrassing. On national TV, and on social media, and talked about in other national media and as the post I quoted also says, could even be confused with being associated with a terrorist attack.

And if you think I am the only parent of a current or possible future student who feels that way, you all who think its not a big deal need to open your eyes.

The school ****ed up by not trying to put a stop to it during the game. It was embarrassing that the kids who go to CU are associated with this. It crossed a line. If they were chanting **** the cougars, or **** BYU I would be defending the students. But **** the Mormons, even if as someone else stated is just one deviation away...is a big line to cross. And a $50k fine is a small price for the University to pay and the conference to levy to say...hey, this is ****ed up and unacceptable.

FWIW, I was at the game, although on the westside (but across from the student section), and I never heard the chant. Nor did any of the BYU fans next to me hear it....

So I wonder how long the chant was going on, and if anyone from the school was aware of it when it was happening. Regardless, this is an unfortunate look for the school.

I think it's important to point out that Omarion has had some painful drops in three of the five games. His drop on a key third down towards the end of the first half this week was tough. CU was still up 14-3 and in BYU territory after a couple decent plays with BYU's defense starting to tire from being on the field so much. He makes the catch, and we're just outside of FG range with lots of momentum. In fairness to Omarion, it was a fairly crappy throw, but it was catchable. No catch, we punt, BYU goes on a long march down the field to pull to 14-10 near the end of the half, and it's a whole different game in the second half.
