CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

Love the concept Oregon and Washington are gone. $0 exit fees. Zero public sympathy for P12 if they were to leave. The timing couldn’t be perfect for them to go but yet… here they are. Stuck with us and about to get lapped in football by CU.

One thing that doesn’t get discussed is what will be the new P12 exit fee because there will be one. Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s a hold up as well.
There is a grant of rights for media. I do not believe there would ever be a pure exit fee for the PAC 12.

And for live sports, you're watching a delayed feed and completely reliant on your internet connection.

Full blown cord cutting for live sports viewers just isn't quite ready, yet
I disagree. I cut the cord in the fall, have YouTube TV and Paramount+ and am not missing anything I care about. I have ESPN and TNT and all the networks and local channels through YouTube, and Paramount gives me the Premier League.

No school has renewed their GOR with the P12 which expires on June 30, 2024. Need 9 votes to dissolve the P12 and with UO & UW leaving plus the Four Corners schools, that leaves just one more school to be the deciding vote. Cal or Stanford will be that one and chances are good they will get the B1G invite as well. If there ever was an exit fee (highly unlikely), that gets dissolved as well.

Everyone in the P12 is free to go at this point until a new GOR is signed but it doesn't sound like there will be a new GOR as well.

This.

Can confirm that there are rumors about the imminent departure of UO and UW from the Pac-12.
But are these new rumors, or the same rumors that have been around for months?

Honestly if I'm either school I would leave for the Big 10 immediately. Even if they go at a reduced rate, they are going to get $20+ million more a year than the Pac is currently paying and will be way more than any new Pac tv contract that gets negotiated.

I haven't had a cable setup since I graduated high school. And I can only remember one time I had an issue viewing a game and it was because I was in a shoddy spot in the mountains where reception was hard to come by. I think streaming only is completely feasible.

Feasible? Sure. Desirable from a cost and ease of use standpoint? Definitely not.

I came for conference realignment news, I stayed for the dissertations on cable versus streaming and related revenue structures.
When a topic has been beat to death, buried, exhumed and beat to death again, and then the whole process repeated about 17 times, one would think you would appreciate the discussion moving to something, anything different.

And, on that note,

I meant no offense, I like everybody else, would like to know what is going to happen. No recriminations, but the collateral discussions are something to wade through, above picture notwithstanding.

The only issue is the money the conference would get. Apple + ESPN streaming only deals ($19M/yr combined to start) would leave the P12 about $11M behind the Big 12 which is a no go. Another $8M would get the P12 within 10% of the B12 and should be enough to keep the conference intact.

The P12 simply would be the first to put all sports on paid tv and the others will end up at that point.

I see your point.

If she was a trans pornstar, she'd rate at least an 8.

No linear = no deal

My guess (and it's been an impossible situation for Commish K):

1. First blindsided by USC & UCLA
2. Then had to wait on the UC Board of Regents to see if they'd alter this.
3. Meanwhile, Oregon & Washington have refused to commit to any GOR while aggressively pursuing B1G (with Phil Knight heavily involved).
4. Meanwhile, UA and CU most likely negotiating with the B12 (possibly others) as a fallback plan for everyone except UA who it seems would have pulled the trigger already if someone was willing to jump with them. For UA, they get the money they need while doing what's best for their hoops program which is their priority.

Has the B1G or SEC been in our ear since we hired Prime? The answer to that question holds the key to our next move. Is it too early to file a CORA to find out?

Either way we got through another week and we’re still here.

Even if the Pac were to get somewhere close to $28 mil per team (they wont), Washington and Oregon are going to get way more than that in Big10 and wont sign any GOR to keep the Pac alive.

Pac is dead.

Reality is CU is going to end up in the Big12 unless a Big10 miracle invite comes along.

Has to be somewhat of a bittersweet pill for UW and UO to swallow knowing that they’ll make a ton more money (cool?) and be in a P2, but neither will be any closer to a National Championship, in fact, I’d argue both would be further away.

Money makes the world go 'round. Losing 30+ million per year and all it can do puts them too far behind their competitors if they want a chance at the NC. Sure, winning the PAC is easier, but they don't need to win the B1G (or even necessarily come in second place) to have a spot in the playoffs.

I can’t imagine that UO and UW are accretive enough by themselves to be full members.

On the other hand, to a more literal add-on to your last point- I don’t think people really stop to consider how far away Eugene and (especially) Seattle are from everything else. Those away games in the B1G are gonna be a slog- pretty much 3.5 hours minimum, 4+ hours for the majority, and 6 hours for some. I know this was also true for USC and UCLA, who I have to imagine are lobbying hard to get some nearer away games

Once they close the playoff to non-P2 members or get rid of auto bids, I think it gets easier, but as things currently stand, there are only 6 at large bids. Just don’t see either one of them being good enough in an 18 team B1G to get one while also competing against the SEC, ACC, Big12/Pac leftovers. They’d have to basically finish 2nd or 3rd to get a spot.

Meh - i cut the cord for everything about 15 years ago and haven't looked back.
I dont know what you all signed up for to make it so expensive. Ive been saving $60 a month for years now. Im about to dump Hulu because no one watches it. I dumped DTV in part because they didnt have the P12N and Sling did.
