CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

I don't know, my 7 year old threw a massive fit this morning when I informed him I wasn't letting him stay up to watch the end of tonight's Nuggets game. The five year old joined him, but I think that's just because she's an anarchist at heart and not a sports fan.
 
ESPN and Fox have agreed to innovative in-game access with the Pac-12 to coaches during the game starting this fall. It is interesting that the networks are putting in the effort given that they are dumping the Pac-12 so fast and headed to Mexico with the B12 per the Endevour instructed crowd.

The Pac-12 will provide enhanced in-game and pregame access during broadcasts of college football games this fall, including in-game head coach interviews and having select coaches and players wear mics during pregame activities.

In the graphic that Miami posted, Esports is big with Gen Z and it's only 2% behind college football. Esports is basically watching other people play videogames and I do not think there is one gamer on this very board that is interested in Esports. I tried following that very briefly and decided that I would rather play the game than watch others play. That is something I don't think I will understand about Gen Z & Alpha as an avid gamer.

Having said that, I'm surprised Esports is just behind both levels of football and the NBA.

Yeah, that’s what university presidents do. Lie to the media about tv deals. They also make up details about bidders then get in front of a camera and see who will believe them. No different than a Twitter troll account. Nailed it.

Reddit already killed off the PAC in their minds and doing the same to the ACC. I honestly think the ACC is very vulnerable. All it takes is one of the 7 to add an 8th team and that kills off the ACC. It will be interesting to see what ND does too.

If the 8 teams do decide to break off they would need a TV deal because it's highly doubtful that all 8 would find an immediate home in one of the other P5 conferences. They could go form their own conference and maybe get $5-$10 million more per school annually but with the proposed unequal revenue sharing being discussed, some of the schools wanting to leave will get that anyway under the proposed league venue model.

Bottom line, I think this new model will keep the ACC intact for now but as we know unequal revenue distribution is not a viable longterm solution. Plus some of these schools will eventually end up in the B1G or SEC anyway.

The 7 schools in question are Miami, FSU, Clemson, NC ST, UNC, UVA, and VT. The 8th school is reportedly Louisville.

Exactly. It’s a bball conference. There’s not a single football program worthy of top billing. Even this year we got TCU on the Big Noon game on Sept 2, they couldn’t do that themselves. That’s what happens when a conference is full of 2nd tier Texas teams + a Kansas duo.

I would not be surprised to see them stall out at $31M or even go down in the future. Their upcoming contract will prove out how little brand value their fb teams have.

I heard that next tv deal for the BIG12 Yormark may sign a basketball only deal separate to the football one. Curious if that ends up being a smart move.

I think that's long overdue. Are you going to care if CU is in the same conference as CSU for the olympic sports but not for football & basketball?
 
I'm going to rehash the ESPN direct to consumer stuff. There is a new article out and it provides some important details.


As it stands, ESPN is an essential service for cable and satellite TV providers. ESPN gets an average of $9.42 from the average cable bill. Other networks? They average less than 50 cents.

That could be a huge hit to cable companies but ESPN will continue to be offered on cable companies thanks to the recent contracts with ISPs over the last few years.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Disney and ESPN have begun laying the groundwork to begin selling the premium sports network as a standalone, direct-to-consumer option. Yes, Disney has ESPN+, which has amassed more than 25 million subscribers, but it does not broadcast a live feed of the main ESPN network, which remains one of the biggest draws for almost anyone that still subscribes to a cable TV package. The plan even has an internal codename of "Flagship," suggesting its importance to the future of the company.

ESPN would continue to offer its channel through cable providers, but they have been negotiating contacts with carriers to allow for the streaming spin-off.

They would have loved the old tape delay nba playoff games. Imagine talking your mom into letting you stay up till 1 am to watch a basketball game when you’re nine.

My not too serious comment that we should go independent: CP is the hottest property in college football at this point. If we can somehow go 6 - 6 and go to a bowl, he will be as feature story all season. We need to max out on this value. The networks want access to CP:

Couple of places reporting NBC Universal is out now for PAC12 deal. Not surprising since they just spent 110 million for one NFL playoff game.
 
If we could pick, what’s the best nearest 5-pack of schools we should play on a yearly basis?

B1G:
Nebraska
Iowa
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Illinois

SEC:

Texas A&M
Missouri

Oregon

Logistically we’re closest to the B1G, historically closer to the SEC and currently in the PAC.

They’re all solid and we fit everywhere but what’s the best fit?

I’d rank them as B1G, SEC then PAC.

Nebs every year would be fun and I could see a rivalry w/ Wisconsin and Iowa.

SEC has the nostalgia going for it. The Texas Oklahoma games always felt like big games.

If the PAC had more stability and money it would be fun to keep playing UO, UW and UU now that we’re back but everyone is looking for a way out.
