CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

here are some guesses:

ESPN has some kind of an option right to broadcast a certain number of games, selected near the week of.... think of a discretionary flex scheduling deal. maybe a max number of games, and certain start times, etc. if they exercise the option to televise, then they pay some amount of money per game. this may also be how the league finds a way to give more $$ to the teams optioned.

everything gets carried on apple. every team and every game. this includes the flexed out ESPN games.

apple retires the outstanding debts and such and takes over the network stuff.

5y year deal, no outs, with a 5 year GoR.

37mm a team, with escalators., bonuses, and such on top of that.

that's my prediction.

The prisoner’s dilemma presented by the looming death rattle of the PAC12 does not involve any “totally cool” options.

Good analogy. Choose between the probable slim hope that the P12 can stay healthy long enough for CU to launch to a P2 or choose capitulation now and just join the B12.

I appreciate that some people want the wait to be over now even if it means certain damnation in B12.

if a person is too asperberger's to distinguish between a "known fact" and a tongue-in-cheek prediction, then one cannot be helped and may god have mercy on one's soul.

I'll have an asperberger with fries and a large vanilla shake.....

Hold the lettuce.

My SWAG here:

The “forward thinking” deal the Pac is cutting will be performance based.

The top end outcome of $37m/team will be based on the most optimistic projection of the number of viewers in a season.
Yes. This is exactly the problem with this sort of “deal.” And, as was pointed out earlier, if there was a real, committed, hard-line money offer to be had, it would have been made months ago.

Our choices seem to, rather glaringly, be (1) B12 or (2) committing to the realm of monetary uncertainty that goes with an App-based, subscription-dependent flow of money that will, even by the most optimistic projections, never reach $40 million, and likely be far, far less.

THEN, the real problem: the money flow would be completely uncertain from year to year (maybe even month to month) subject to the whims of the market and even major news cycles, much less changes in technology. What if a new platform becomes the go-to subscription base for many of the subscribers this money flow would be reliant on? The money flow could completely crater, while our budget numbers are very hard-line.

In other words, this new concept of a deal would commit CU not just to the PAC12 (maybe) but also to a highly variable content licensing platform. Sure the future of sports viewing may be streaming content, but how do we know if it will be streaming on these platforms?

If it's one of the new players with a different model, I'd expect they'd guarantee a minimum and then have escalators where upsides could take the deal above what ACC & B12 are locked in at. Risk/reward scenario, which is challenging when negotiating with academe - generally a very risk- averse bunch. I'm sure the presidents are going to push for higher guarantees and accept less upside to get that.

yes, there will be MGs because schools have to operate on a somewhat predictable budget for athletecs.

with respect to the idea of an ESPN flex option partnered with apple, some things i wonder about--- if you did a venn diagram of folks who already have access to ESPN and those who have access to apple tv, it would me interesting to see the existing overlap. and, a step further, an overlap of targeted new added subs via forecast.

i think there is way to do this deal and keep everyone in the boat. but, i also think the only reason i haven't yet slept with that movie star i have a crush on is that she hasn't met me yet.

let the games begin!

If I put the entire Pac12, all teams, all games, behind a Pac12 wholly owned streaming app how many subscribers do think would be needed to reach $800m and distribute $40m per school?

The number is not really that large. And if we reached that number and then doubled it you’d have B1G Money

It's not that easy. Production costs per game are not cheap and you can't forget these broadcasters are trying to make a profit.

when my deranged profound predictions become true, i shall highlight the op and mock the rest of you mercilessly. this is the benefit of having taken all sides from every angle in various posts in the thread. like a monkey with a typewriter, i am bound to type the right combination of words to be a truth sayer.

That’s a huge IF to commit all the (remaining) PAC12 schools athletic futures to: creating an entity that doesn’t presently exist at anywhere near that level, on the idea that if you build it they will come, as being the great savior of the conference?

And then, the up front cost of creating a full scale, technically modern production capability (which I’m sure we all agree the current PAC12Network is not). That’s a bunch of up front money, when the schools are wondering who is sending them their next big media check. (Not even mentioning the “claw-back” suit’s impact on available money to do this with.)

i do not understand the hate for some combo of streaming and traditional distribution. it is all blending into one thing anyhow.

and, a company like apple can do some crazy **** too to boost numbers. they could bundle the p12 in with other stuff.

the circularity of the arguments is amusing--- it is "there isn't a deal with the b12 yet because pac schools think the pac will close a better deal." versus "if the pac had a better deal, it would already be done."

we still don't know ****, but i figure i will keep rage typing until something happens.
