CU-UCLA Game Thread! Espn 2 5 PM MT

CU is not winning 1-3 games by playing only younger freshman players. You hate this staff and think they suck. We get it
This season doesn’t matter. We can win more NEXT season (and in future seasons) by giving younger players run.

One thing the people in your camp don’t understand: NOT giving meaningful snaps to younger players is why a guy like Noyer got buried on the depth chart.

Many people here are decrying previous staffs for not “knowing what they had” in Noyer. They’re doing the same thing this staff is doing: these coaches want to win now so they’re playing what they have.

Freakin great game! Get the secondary and safety making better tackles and this boulder get really fun!
Has anyone heard if our D line is given gap responsibility or what? Trying to understand zone lanes and first step as I rewatch and see no consistency?

Thanks

The differences we still have (in this forum, ha!):
1. I think recruiting can be helped with a 3-3 showing of respectability and good coaching. For example, if I'm the Dad of an OL recruit, I immediately think after last night that the OL coach is better than anyone on here had credited him for. So in general, leaving a positive impression is VERY important in my mind.

KD has NOT being given the benefit of the doubt by recruits. We are not doing that here as fans, so of course recruits are not. We can null this.

2. We don't really know how Lewis has responded. Perhaps he's just making frosh errors and hasn't grasped the finer points. In that case, putting him in when he has enough grasped to succeed (at some level) will be beneficial. That may be weeks ago, or it may not be this season. For all we know, Lewis is being disciplined and is in the dog house. We don't know.
What if we don’t win 3 games and don’t give meaningful run to younger players? Then where are we with their development?

I expect Lewis to make Freshman errors. I’d rather he make them in an abbreviated season with muted expectations than a regular season when we expect the team to win.

We are a game in-again. If we're having this conversation in 2022 or 2023, I'm agreeing with you. Not right now. Plus-****braska has a very competitive recruiting structure. They've been fourth in the Big 10 in recruiting behind OSU, PSU, and Michigan/Wisconsin IIRC..........and Scott Frost is 9-19.

if we wait until 22 or 23for recruiting to improve, this team will never recover. Yes, 1 game in he won with other people’s recruits. Just like he did at UCLA. You cannot put off the recruiting. Finishing in the bottom 2 of the PAC is loosing ground. In a game much bigger than we played last night, this staff is getting their clock cleaned and failing. Bottom line. They have structural problems keeping them from succeeding whether you like it or not.

Kind of like how Mel Tucker won 5 games last year with Mike MacIntyre's recruits? We took a chance on a guy who was inevitably going to move on first chance he got in December of 2018 (I tried to tell you-but you guys were too busy calling me a racist to listen. Look at Tucker's resume-he's had 13 different gigs in 20 years in coaching and hasn't been anywhere longer than 3 years)-we're now in this situation.

Everybody needs to be patient here-whether you, manhattan, snow and others like it or not. We need stability more than anything right now.

I can’t wrap my head around the idea that this season “doesn’t matter”. In what universe do actual games played not matter? Also, how if our recruiters are bad, wouldn’t a losing season make it harder to recruit? The mental gymnastics you have to go through to convince yourself that recruiting will somehow be better if we win fewer games is truly remarkable.

What if?

Some QBs are ready to go as True Frosh, but usually with a full spring first. And even then, they can make some mistakes due to inexperience. That may in fact be where we are with Lewis and this season should still provide some room for him to do that.

Some QBs are slower to grasp the system and playing them under that situation does NOT provide the learning experience you seek.

We have no idea how ready Lewis is. He may be either of those I describe above. If he's truly pretty close and pushing, then absolutely, I want to see him get some PT and I'd sacrifice a W or whatever. But that's a big IF.....

I'm all for putting a positive spin on this season. KD lacks cache and last night gave him some. It makes it much easier to recruit when the opposition isn't blowing holes in your credibility.

Hey speaking of credibility, our High School OL coach looks like the best ever! Summer better be watching"How to defend the screen pass 101" today though! And our CB's looked to be lacking some fundamentals but had mastered the interference play.

At first, the offense looked like Chev 2018. As the game went on, it looked like he adapted a lot of 2019 into the offense and then some. But the adherence to running the ball was VERY enjoyable.

I did not call you racist so just cut that crap now. Yep, Mel did win 5 games and brought in a very good recruiting class. Also changed the culture around recruiting and put in the infrastructure to be at least a bit more competitive with recruits. That is all gone and we have a guy who has no idea what he is doing as a recruiting coordinator. We have a bottom 2 if not the bottom class in the PAC. If there are not dramatic changes made to improve the recruiting, stability will continue to be a problem because HCKD will not see more that 3-4 years and we will rinse and repeat. The best way to get the stability you are suggesting is to get busy recruiting Right now, they are failing

You are the only one with muted expectations. I want to win. Best 11 play each side of the ball. If he is not ready, he sits till he is.

What can Colorado win this season? Going to a bowl is meritless since everybody is qualified. We’re not going to win the PAC-12 or CFP. Winning a couple of games while not giving legitimate run to younger players is banal. We’ve tried your method. It’s been a dramatic failure for nearly 20 years.

Actually, Larry Scott has mandated that Pac 12 Schools have to go at least .500 to make a bowl game. Saying that, if CU makes a bowl game I do think it can help the perspective to recruits.

IF bowls exist and we qualify, it will help to get practices. Letting young players languish is not a winning long term strategy.

You are correct, we haven't seen the practices, we haven't been in the meeting rooms. We don't know what they have in Lewis or in a whole bunch of other guys at other positions who are trying to make the jump from HS to P5 football.

There are QBs who are ready to go as freshmen. Those guys are usually called 4 star or 5 star recruits and have offers from a bunch of schools, some of whom are consistently in the top 25 rankings (or higher.) Lewis wasn't one of those guys.

https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/20-tx-qb-brendon-lewis-signed-to-colorado.137184/

By Colorado standards he had a good offer list and Rivals had him as a high 3 star but I must have missed the offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, even home state Texas and Texas A&M.

I wasn't a big fan of hiring KD, primarily because of his recruiting history, but he is here now and as a fan I hope he proves me wrong and has great success. Doesn't bother me a bit to see a good man exceed expectations and succeed.

We won a game last night against another team from our conference, we played a lot of guys, we got a back-up QB some meaningful snaps. I know we are CU fans and we have learned to live in disappointment but lets just enjoy it and recognize some positives for a few days.

Week 1 PAC 12 QB ratings:
144.8—Sam Noyer, Colorado 143.7—Tyler Shough, Oregon 141.6—DTR, UCLA 139.3—Kedon Slovis, USC 136.5—Jack West, Stanford 135.3—Tristan Gebbia, OSU 126.3—Jayden de Laura, WSU 111.1—Jayden Daniels, ASU

Week 1 PAC 12 rushing leader:
1. Jerek Broussard--187

In the light of the next day, I'm feeling more comfortable with the team's direction. Taking into account how disruptive COVID has been and a new coach et al., I think last night's performance was pretty good. Hoping for the best this season.

Talked to my Dad today and even he mentioned being impressed with Broussard. My Dad only casually follows CU.

Other than Lewis, who didn't play that should be playing?
I think you’re missing the theme of my posts. All underclassmen should be getting significant run to get reps that we lost in the spring. We should be playing as many players as possible in order to get our players game snaps to build our roster depth. But, we won’t because our coaches have to win now. Except, in this year, we don’t have to win now. This is a chance to do something we never do and it’ll be business as usual (mediocrity).

My biggest question, will opposing defenses be calling Chevs play before it’s snapped in three weeks?

That's a good question. The passing game was kept pretty simple to get Noyer going, but he converted. One of the most encouraging things was to see the OL dominating like they did, especially against a UCLA team that embarrassed them a year ago. We'll see.

Alabama recruited their way to success. Before Nick Saban was their HC, their program was bereft of talent for Alabama’s standards. Even in his first season, they were not great (remember the loss to ULM?).

They sold playing time and a pathway to the NFL to that first crop of winners. They started getting really good players because of their commitment to recruiting and have been successful ever since.
That 2007 Independence Bowl haunts me. Both programs, it seemed, were rising from a downturn. At the time, it seemed CU was in a better position. The program’s success was more recent than Alabama’s. Since that game, talk about a tale of two programs.

The bolded.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.

We're ****ed until that changes.

(also, my phone kept on autocorrecting "ding" to "dying" - I thought about not fixing it...)

I cant believe what I am reading. Winning is the end goal of coaching, player performance, and recruiting. And ultimately creates a national exposure. Beiing relevant matters, winning matters!

Highly recommend this book. Mind blowing stuff.

Furthermore, I dont give a **** if we are perpetually recruiting 2 stars as long as we're winning.
Do not worry, if we are recruiting 2 stars, we will keep winning at the pace of the last 15 years. How many bowls were included in that run of great winning?

Bruossard was amazing with his way of being at pretty much full speed as he enters the hole, and he just FLOWS thought the hole, either a cut, shuffle, slide, whatever to make it through and the defender is probably amazed he is already through.

He must watch Bruce Lee movies, and he knows how to "be like water"

Keep it up Brou

They already did that on that wide sweep to Mangham
