First CFP Rankings

With respect, I have a hard time believing this quote is from Chris Peterson. The only place I've seen this is on that random guys twitter feed. I don't see any reference to an actual media link and cannot find anything in Seattle news reporting about this quote.

The language seems off as well. I can't believe he would say these things. If he did then fine but until I see a link I am doubtful that came from Coach Peterson.

Look, it is what it is. The Huskies lost a close game to ASU. They are not undefeated and will frankly need help to get into the playoffs.

Further, we have yet to play a single game of November football. There is way too many games left to play. UW needs to worry about Oregon this week and the rest of the games this month. If, and this is a big if, they win out... then we can ponder about who is deserving. If they don't make it they don't. As a Husky fan I'm just thrilled to have a great coach and good team again.

ESPN was giving UW a mini smear job earlier in October so I'm guessing somebody put this out there to further belittle UW. The ex-players from the Big X in particular seem to have an axe to grind.

There is only so much you can do with scheduling. When Rutgers was scheduled they were two years removed from a Conference Championship team (Big East). Who knew that as of Nov 1st Rutgers would have a better record than Florida St? You just really never know when games are scheduled in advance. Wisconsin did chicken out of a series but the first game of that one was scheduled for next year.

I remember all too well when the Huskies were in the Willingham years that they were scheduling OOC way too difficult. UW was one of the final 4 teams in the NCAA who had never played a football FCS opponent until a few years ago. Now they seem to have an SEC style cupcake OOC and they're called on it when they still play 9 conference games?

Whatever. When you lose you don't control your own fate. There is nothing to complain about.

Some of the teams ranked higher have better OOC opponents. Some don't. I don't think personally that Penn St's OOC is any harder. Ohio St. played OU but that really is a "quality" loss if we're going there. Who has Oklahoma St beat? I have a hard time with the Big 10 love over Pac 12 love on ESPN when historically the conference champions meet in the Rose Bowl and the Pac wins 2 of 3 of those games over the past few decades. Many of the ESPN analysts are players from the Big and they begrudge the Pac for some reason. I know Desmond Howard is still hurt about getting so thoroughly humiliated when playing against UW and losing to them in the Rose Bowl some time ago. I simply don't watch ESPN anymore.

Anyway, who really cares about the first rankings? UW doesn't have anything to complain about at this time. And quite frankly they've suffered far too many serious injuries IMO to make much noise in the playoffs. They're down their best linemant (LT) for the year, they've lost both starting cornerbacks, their top two TEs and a couple receivers. While they have depth they're lost too much offense to make a huge run IMO. The defense is nasty and fun to watch, and that is what many of us UW older timers appreciate - dominant Ds.

I hope a Pac team can with the national title soon, because until they do they will continue to be perceived as a weak conference.
Looking into it more, I think you are right. The account is verified and was RT'd multiple times by other verified college football folks, but it looks like it's a satire account. My apologies.

If Peterson really said that then I think he needs to see a doctor as it is completely unlike him.

I think this was written by a Big 10 homer.

If the Huskies are undercovered in the media - just win.

A storied history of being average or slightly above? Does that pertain to all Top 20-25 all time teams as well? Teams that have previously won national titles? They were well below average for too long this century but their history is anything but.

No Husky should have an issue with primetime games in the evening. It's having zero day games scheduled that was the problem (ESPN talking heads glossed over that). Until last weekend vs Ucla, the earliest kickoff for UW was 7pm and they did not play a single day game. I think that concern is legitimate. They probably won't have another day game until the Apple Cup. It doesn't matter because they have no control over it.

Working on weekends? Who doesn't. The West Coast and Seattle is now known for tech. It used to be logging and such but only a midwest homer is going to claim Seattle is blue-collar. There are lots of blue collar airline positions but really? Reaching much?

This sounds like it was written by a bitter midwest Big 10 fan who is purposely trying to smear UW and make them look whiny.

If Coach Peterson said it, then I will be the first to say I'm very disappointed as I've never heard him sound so poor and perhaps unhinged.

No apologies needed.

If he wrote it then it deserves to be slammed. I don't like it when the media make fun of the Pac is all. I no longer pay attention to national narratives for that reason.

I must have glossed over a few parts, but after reading it again, it is clearly satire.

Mtn get a hold of your keyboard?

Either way, it's two years in a row the huskies have boned up the Pac 12 playoff presence. Finish the job suck dogs!

Apparently the late kickoffs cause people to not realize they are 7-1?

Oh, whoops. I didn’t look at the standings and for some reason was thinking Washington states big win was over Washington. Which doesn’t make sense as it’s always their last game and I remember Washington state beating USC. Oh well. They still don’t deserve to gripe, it’s the first poll.

Well written satire :) .

I had to read it a few times to make sense of it. There was a narrative earlier (October) from ESPN that tried to make UW sound whiny so this seemed to fit right in with that. If you don't follow Peterson's press conferences or listen closely to what he says, it would be very easy to think this was real. The author did a good job of punking UW IMO.

ND is screwed. They can win out and the chances they get in are still small. If there are at least 4 P5 Conference champions with one loss or less, they will leapfrog ND to get into the playoff. The CFP loves conference champions and loves having that extra game on the resume.

Gonna love it when they are 11-1 and and on the outside looking in due to being an independent.

ND won't be left out at 11-1. Book it.

If they're 11-1, no one will have nearly the quality of wins ND has (or as good of a loss except for maybe Penn State's loss at OSU).

They are already in the final 4 with the first rankings. They probably have a top 10 Miami and top 25 Stanford left. Unfortunately I don't see a way they would be left out.

Navy could be ranked when they play, too. 5-2 with Temple this week and SMU next week. Only losses are to ranked teams (Memphis & UCF), and they played them close.

November is going to be a fun month. I think Georgia, Oklahoma, and Ohio State all drop a game before the conference championship games.

Only 5/12 teams that have been ranked in the top 4 of the initial CFP ranking the past 3 years have actually ended up in the playoff. A&M was 7-1 and ranked #4 this time last year and ended up unranked. In 2014, Auburn, Ole Miss and Miss State were all in the top 4 in the initial ranking and all ended up outside with multiple losses each.

I'm fine with them for now, alot of football to go. It should clear up a bit. Also, I do think we will have a 2 loss team eventually. I just don't know about this year.

Doesn’t matter. The poll is point in time, not a season ending projection.

They have a great resume, but the committee places massive emphasis on a 13th data point that is also a championship against a quality opponent. See TCU’s CFP ranking before and after conference championship weekend in the first year of the playoffs.

The committee values the conference championships as the biggest differentiation in final rankings. ND is done, unless there are 3 or less conference champions with one loss or less.

It is ONE of the differentiations in the final rankings, not a make or break standard. TCU needed another quality win that season because the Big 12 was down. Notre Dame has a schedule which is an asset.

We will see. Quality CCG win >>>>>>>> Quality win in the committee’s eyes.
Too much football to still be played to really worry at this point. The scenario is unlikely to occur.

The disturbing part of this for me is that the highest ranked PAC 12 team is 12th. There are three Big 12 teams ahead of Washington.

two one-loss XII teams ranked ahead of the only undefeated B1G team. that doesn't seem right at all.

It’s deserved though. Oklahoma has beaten Ohio State and lost to #14 Iowa State. TCU beat Oklahoma State and lost to Iowa State. Oklahoma State doesn’t have a signature win but their only loss was to TCU. Washington has no good wins and lost to mediocre ASU.

Bedlam will settle that argument this weekend though.

Didn't Oklahoma make it two years ago with one loss and no conference Championship game?

It is deserved. No question. I’ve never been one to say that the Pac 12 is better football than our old conference. This year it seems obvious.
