Games thread- MEN'S BBall opens season hosting Eastern Washington (Mon., 11/4/24; 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and No. Colorado (Friday, 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+)

Can we let Ruffin run the point or are we worried about overtaxing him? Would love to see a closing lineup of Malone, Dak, Rancik, Baskin, Ruffin. Could be a defensive menace with all the length if they learn how to play team defense.

If this team is going to win some BIG 12 games this year it is going to have to be what most consider ugly basketball, games in the 50s. Although if we win Tad would consider it beautiful.
It would be beautiful. The winning formula always is.

Worrying about fan-friendly, entertaining style basketball is only something losers worry about because they're hoping to keep fans engaged while sucking.

We can talk about tad ball all we want, but this team doesn't look like it will be good enough defensively to overcome 15 turnovers a game (or more!). I am hoping for brutal, ugly, awful tad ball. Let's go.

Why didn’t crawford play? Any chance he’s a significant contributor when he plays? Would be great for him to be a top 8 guy.
1) From what I saw in preseason, he's young, under-sized, and needs development time.

2) Not really.

I'm expecting a rs.

Some random thoughts:

1) Julian isn't as bad as he showed last night. Not as good as we need, bit not that bad.
2) I really liked Tad pulling the plug on that lineup quick. Playing small and pesky may be our best option. I see flashes in Malone, but we don't have anyone who can make an entry pass right now.
3) I like Baskin now more than I did before the scrimmage. Verrrry useful. Value add.
4) Rancik is a delight. Someone better start an nil fund now to keep him.
5) BD is trying to do too much on O, I think. They want him in that tds role. He's got 2 months to figure that out.
6) RJ and Ruf are useful, but need to grow up quick.
7) Defense, rebounding, and 3 point shooting is the only thing that can get this bunch to .500.
8) Beat UNC.

who knew you could write with such brevity!

Some nice pieces on this team. But we don't have a lead guard and when teams apply pressure we fall apart. Id kill for frosh McKinley right now. Tads trying to fit these puzzle pieces together but he's missing the ****in corner pieces.

It's not a good sign when in the post game tad says he had no idea who to start out of 11 guys and the starting lineup he used was terrible. And our supposed starting PG played so badly he was benched to start the 2d half.

Things I liked: rancik (he can shoot and he's got moxie), Baskin (he's gonna have trouble against plus athletes but he fights and makes **** happen), Raj (he physically belongs and he's not a walking turnover).

Things that worried me: diop and Dak: 0 development shown.

@Goose was right all offseason. We have absolutely no PG. I had slight hopes that Hammond would show some improvement, but he seemed to regress.
This was the most disappointing 20 point win I've ever seen. Eastern Washington was terrible and they should have beaten us.
I'm going to have nightmares tonight thinking about the conference games. Houston might beat us by 50. I would press this team all day long. We might have some 30 turnover games.

First 15 minutes of that game was about as bad as the Buffs have ever played. Woof. The altitude did get to EW in the 2nd half, and the Buffs also played a hell of a lot better as well.

Their record may not be all that good this season, but I think the Buffs could be a likeable team that will be a lot of fun to root for.
Cheney, WA is at about 2500’. I doubt altitude was a meaningful factor.

I agree with everything, but #1. Last night Hammond was exactly what he has been for the past 3 years. We just got to see more of it with his expanded playing time. He can't get us into an offensive flow, he's sloppy with the ball, is only good for one or two clutch shots a game, picks up his dribble like a middle schooler, gets bodied and beat on defense, and is in no way a leader.

He should be the first player off the bench. Nothing more.

Nah @Goose - if we had better PG play I wouldn't have had the opportunity to search for 30 mins the most TO's in the Tad era (24 on 2/16/2016, L @ OSU, starting backcourt of Dom and XT had 8 and 5 respectively ).
Why the **** didn't your username come up when I searched dammit?!?

Time to fire someone. I'd suggest one of the people who handle technical stuff, but we need them. So I say we fire @Darth Snow or @Bread

#4 is why I'm having a tough time even sticking with college bball, immediately got anxiety last night about Rancik being woo'd away. I'll keep the worrying to a minimum though as Tad proved he can not only land a Cody Williams but keep a KJ and TDS against competing NIL offers

So true. I've been going through rosters and stats to get a baseline for wagers this season and the turnover on every single team is insane. Everyone from Michigan to Kansas State to Bethune Cookman is replacing 6-7 players.

I was texting with JG (who used to post here) and he was frantically trying to find out the most turnovers we have had under Tad in a single game.

In case you want to track it this season, it’s 24.

I’m high on Rancik. He’s fun.
Rancik has TDS upside. I've thought that since we landed him. Great stroke. Just needs to get stronger.

I genuinely find it hard to root for teams that take the sport back 100 years...even if it's my team.

I've essentially been for making all the rules like the NBA for a while to make the product of CBB more watchable.

One of my favorite things about college football and basketball vs the pros is that it's not generic. You see a wide variety of systems and styles.

100% and how coaches adjust their system to personnel IE Purdue did with Edey and feeding the big man and surrounding him with shooters.

Everyone has been ****ting on Virginias system the last couple years even though it’s been leading them to 20 wins. Also Iowa State, Houston, San Diego State have been having a ton of success with a slowed down slog it out style versus Alabama, Arizona, Creighton, and with and up and down and shoot quick 3s system have all had high success.

Any score predictions for tonight? I'm guessing the game will be a little more even keeled. Buffs up by 4-5 at half then push it out in the 2nd for a 14-15 pt win.
