Howell: Buffs to hire Kurt Roper as new QB Coach

So about that recruiting....
If MacIntyre cared about recruiting, Jeffcoat and Bernardi wouldn't still be here. I guess you can see it as compounding the issue or rather not really improving it, but I didn't expect much from the QB hire in that area. He needs to make those changes to improve recruiting, I guess I just don't see this mattering much compared to that decision/non-decision.

Meh, not bad, not great. Hoping someone is gone soon and the 10th coach has recruiting ties to Pac12 areas.

This seems to be a clear upgrade over Lindgren and we are getting him as a QB coach. Experienced OC in the ACC and SEC to help our new OCs.

I don’t know think Roper is unqualified to be a QB coach. However, I also don’t think his schematic preferences match what we’re going to do offensively. It’ll be an interesting tug of war between him and Chev.

The only reservation I have about this hire is recruiting.

I expect he'll be better than Lindgren and could actually have some credibility covering the Houston area as a Rice graduate, but "better than Lindgren on the trail" is a pretty damn low bar.

But I do like that there's an experienced guy who MacIntyre trusts in the offensive room. That's a good thing.

fwiw, it also removes the only argument I had in the plus column for keeping Bernardi on staff by making him superfluous to that trusted, experienced guy role.

As an OC, this would be a bad hire. As a QB coach this is a solid hire, not great, but solid.

Chev is his boss so he will need to figure that out.

So are we to take that last part of the article as accurate that we are only awaiting the 10th assistant to be hired?

Another potential positive is that Roper can help keep Mac focused and will help him have a better year. Mac was in a daze last year and let the Tumpkin and other stuff mess him up. Roper can give him some refreshing thoughts and motivation. At this point, give me a solid 10th coach and let's roll. Could be improvements in multiple spots, but I am just anxious to get this next year rolling.

I like the hire. Good QB coach. If he can recruit the QB position, I dont care about his ability to fecruit anyone else...as long as we hire a good recruiter for the 10th coach.

Mr. Roper! He was soooo awesome.

What type of scheme does he prefer?

So a balanced spread offense thats uptempo? This is going to be exciting with the new TX RB recruits. David Cutcliffe hopefully taught him all he could. Any theories on why his offenses faltered at SC?
He wasn't good at Florida either.

Hopefully he's a really good QB coach and Xs/Os guy who is a really ****ty play caller.

Assuming Cutcliffe taught him how to teach technique, this doesn't sound like an awful deal. Not a SC expert, but Jake Bentley seemed to put up decent numbers after being buried at UF.
