Folsom is a much cooler spot than Empower or Dicks.

I mean lots of artists play red rocks despite being able to sell out FAR larger venues.

Why do they take less money?

Because it's red rocks.

Folsom / Boulder doesn't have the same cache, but there is history there that some artists a. are aware of and b. want to be part of.
red rocks is fairly iconic in the music scene, folsom with all due respect is not

So, artists, who kind of by definition don't view money as the most important thing, will forego vast amounts of money to pay a small venue like red rocks because it's "iconic," but there's zero chance they'd give up a much smaller amount of money to play Folsom in Boulder vs an anodyne stadium in a ****ty party of town?

End of day, not many shows are ever going to book Folsom, but to pretend that $s are literally the only thing driving decisions in an artistic field is certainly a take.

how much input on venues do the artists truly have? i admit i might be looking at the big tickets too much here, but i guess that management will be the driving force for most here.

my point still stands: folsom is either too small or too big.

The Police played Red Rocks on their final tour in 2007. Scroll down to leg 7. They played a lot smaller scenic venues as they closed out.

More than you would expect (my uncle was a concert promoter).

Really though, it's the concert promoters (who are all local) and the artists' managers that make most of the decisions.

The venues' relationship with the local promoters play an outsize role, as do the feelings (good or bad) the promoters have about the venue.

"Commerce city is a shîthole, I'm not putting a concert in Dicks" is, fair or not, a likely attitude.

If CU is willing to work to "right size" the stadium to the show (e.g. set up the stage on the south 30 yard line and only sell tickets in the south 1/3 of the stadium), they could probably book more shows. With a grass field that'd be a terrible idea, but with the right turf it wouldn't be a problem.

How will the turf affect Ralphie running? My gut tells me that they're trying to phase her out completely :(

I personally hate that they're switching to turf...football should be played on real grass, regardless of weather. I feel like there are other stadium improvements that should have been prioritized. But, they didn't ask me for my input, so...hopefully it turns out nice.

Ralphies have run on turf at Folsom in the past, I don’t think it will be an issue any more than this one already has with with running in general.

Something not too uncommon with veteran acts is that they enjoy mixing it up with venues. Some of them like how the vibe and way to arrange their show changes from club to small hall to arena to stadium, indoor or outdoor, etc. and it's a lot more fun than a repetitive arena tour. It's why Boulder pulls acts to Chataqua every year who choose to add an extra date for the experience of playing there even though it's not as lucrative for them as other shows they could do. And Boulder loves its live music events - as much as folks criticize the locals for lukewarm support of sporting events, those same locals pack performance arts stuff.

Just think about how fast Ralphie V would have been on turf.

Shouldn’t be an issue since Ralphie does not run.

So, where is artificial turf technology these days? I assume it has gotten much better than it was even 10 years ago.

I think you’re selling Folsom short. Rolling Stones, The Who, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead and the Eagles have all played Folsom. If you’re going to play a stadium show in Colorado, it’s definitely on the list. Not every artist wants to play at Mile High. Mile High can (and does) host a lot more shows than Folsom, and that’s fine. Let them. There’s a spot for shows at Folsom.

My dream would be for CU to have an Athletic Village like some other schools have put together. Maybe it would require the South Campus development, but much could happen on the East Campus or north of Boulder Creek where the football practice facilities are.

1. Soccer/ Lacrosse (field sports stadium) that would seat about 5K. Add men's lacrosse and soccer.

2. Track & Field stadium with 1-2k.

3. Tennis courts.

4. Sand Volleyball (add a Beach VB team).

5. Blue Sky dream: baseball and softball stadiums (3-5k).

6. Athletics complex for training facilities and fan amenities in the center of it all.

Separately, we tear down the Keg and construct a new court sports arena which also has ice conversion so we can add men's & women's hockey.

Also, we do a deal at Eldora with Ski like we did with Colorado National for golf so that there's a home mountain with full facilities that's close enough to be a location that can be used for booster events. Both golf & ski properties should offer CU students low cost use for rounds & runs.

The natural spot for this would be on the North side of Boulder Creek. Essentially on the corner of Folsom and Arapahoe. There’s enough space there for an Olympic Pool, dive well, etc. It could be epic.

It would also cost around a billion dollars and require relocation of all the family housing. So yeah, it’s a pipe dream. But I agree it would be awesome.

You also have that old CU apartment housing that's on the corner of Colorado & 30th that abuts Prentup & Potts on the East Campus. Also a good amount of undeveloped land over there.

New Keg would go behind the west stands at Folsom Field?
Why not current location? During construction, we'd have to play in Denver for a year or something, but I think the existing arena location is pretty good. Traffic in and out along with parking seems sufficient.

I was thinking about having all the athletic teams being closer to Folsom Field in that case although the existing location is good.

We need to dream big. Either plan will be a battle with the City, but going that big will be East Campus. IMO given access issues and need for the additional parking East Campus gives more options. If they built East Campus, I would think that they either add an interchange into US-36 eastside; or they substantially redesign that Table Mesa interchange. Could be tough to shoe-horn an extra one in up the hill.

Expanding north of Boulder Creek is certainly great property, however to pull it off on a huge scale they would have to look at moving Boulder High dealing with BVSD. My younger son attends Boulder High--it is a great but dated facility with treasured history. I am a bit surprised with all of COB/BVSD's planning that they did not look to relocate Boulder High to a new site, perhaps the old mental institution (below Sanitas) or even the hospital on Broadway. For the students safety is always an issue, and Boulder High has little defensible space, compared to most schools in the county. My older son went to Monarch, and except for the fire (they resolved the emergency access issue) it is much different and feels safer. Dropping your son off to BH in the morning and grabbing a drink at the Canyon Circle K can be quite an experience. It is not the kids or local homeless, rather some of the adult rif-raf that just gets off at the Boulder bus station to do who knows what.

Boulder High isn't moving anywhere. The City of Boulder has zero say in what CU does with its own property. If they expanded to the north side of Boulder Creek, it would be where all that family housing is now.

There was some talk about moving BHS about 20 years ago to that spot where the Diagonal and Foothills Parkway intersect. There's a bunch of apartments there now. The idea was floated, it was (rightly) ridiculed as moronic, and dropped.
