As much as I love the grass, as others have mentioned, it felt like the field was in ****ty shape pretty much from game 2 on last year. And I’m pretty sure every year there is a discussion within a thread about how the field looks so bad.

It was time, the field showed it wasn’t going to withstand events and games over time for multiple years in a row

While I agree last year the field got bad I am still disappointed in going back to turf. Injuries are still slightly elevated and more severe on turf, ditto concussions. That said I think there are some obvious drivers for the choice.

1.Money
A. Events in season.
B. Decreased operating costs

2. Speed, CU’s positional speed was negated due to the turf issues as the field got worse. Won’t happen except during inclement weather with turf.

3. A certain head coach knows appearances matter and turf always looks shiney and new.

4. More 5th downs

I agree with many of the points made in favor of keeping the grass field. It won't be so bad, though. The majority of practices are already held on turf in the indoor practice facility. Also, the grass field at Folsom gets pretty beat by the time early December rolls around. This ain't your father's Astroturf.

I understand that the grass at Folsom hasn't been holding up. I don't understand why that can't be corrected.

A quick search just confirmed that Mile High has real grass.

Ok? Is that outside the budget for Folsom?

I legit have no idea what it costs to replace a field, but I know CU is generating a helluva lot more revenue from ticket sales the last few years.
When you have the richest owners in the NFL it doesn’t matter. When you’re a mid major college program with $22m/year of rev share, a highly paid staff, including what’s likely going to be a top 10 highest paid HC, and an entire west side renovation project trying to get funded, and an events center that needs total renovation, spending $$ on replacing grass mid way through a football season during a time of year where natural gras literally doesn’t grow in Colorado seems like a pretty big waste of money to me.

Renovating the West Stands could hinge on signing up about 5-8 concerts per year and using those funds for the project. Gotta spend football money on the football team.

I'll admit, I was mistaken about the viability of concerts at Folsom.

Not many acts book football stadiums any more, and I really thought that pretty much anyone doing so in CO you want to prioritize the Denver market over Boulder.

I'm not sure I get why it's working, but it's cool. I hope Phish packs Folsom.

Yep. Colorado's dry climate and heavily clay soil makes it almost impossible for a field to hold up more than a month two. I had to check on ND because I swear they were one of the last "northern" holdouts, but they switched in 2014!

So, CU can't change the composition of the soil and also water the field? You learn something new every day.

Sure you can, but it makes maintaining it that much harder. Also, seasonal change and heavy traffic every other week factor in as well.

I fail to see why artists would go to Boulder for a concert, btw. Folsom is either too big or too small. If you can fill Folsom you may just as well go to Mile High and if you can’t you have Dick’s at 20k or Red Rocks at 9k. The size just doesn’t make sense when you have a bigger and also better stadium in a way more convenient location essentially next door.

People prefer Boulder to Commerce City.

Agree. It doesn't make a ton of sense to me either. Unless the facility fees at Folsom are much less than Mile High.

They’ll be but if you think you can sell out Mile High you still go there as it holds 85k and will presumably also have better hospitality facilities etc.

Got it. Artists would rather play in front of 20k in 50k venue and presumably make less money than play in front of 20k in a 20k venue because they’d rather be in Boulder.
I mean lots of artists play red rocks despite being able to sell out FAR larger venues.

Why do they take less money?

Because it's red rocks.

Folsom / Boulder doesn't have the same cache, but there is history there that some artists a. are aware of and b. want to be part of.

If I wanted to go to a hippie concert, I'd go to Boulder not Commerce City & Mile High. You can't find that vibe in Boulder in other parts of the state and that uniqueness is something I love Boulder about even if I'm a stranger to the people there.

I'm kind of surprised the state hasn't forced the schools within the state to switch to turf to conserve water. I think it's only a matter of time before that happens.
