Kyle DeVan - OL Coach

He looks like he has great upside. One thing I learned early in coaching. Every offensive scheme works. Every offensive scheme fails. The difference is execution up front. If he’s the guy to get our o-line to execute their assignments successfully then we win more than we lose. If not, then Bill Walsh, Mouse Davis and Don Coryell couldn’t save us.

Hopefully this guy can uncoach the uncoaching that private Gumbo Von RodSled incorporated in his near two-year reign.
My understanding is that Vlachos at least started that process by having them get back to basics of Kap's approach which we ran in 2019 & 2020 (no spring ball & limited camp, so Gumbo couldn't install his stuff in 2020).

RollTad21 first posted this in Barzil and I think it's very interesting.

Not a wow hire, but seems decent. AZ had a solid run game the years he was there. Michigan's OL coach was a TE coach until this year so he way have had more involvement than the average OL Analyst.

Kyle DeVan was the Arizona offensive line coach before former Michigan assistant Jedd Fisch took over the program there, and he came to Ann Arbor to be an offensive analyst, working specifically with the offensive line. The line just won the Joe Moore Award, given to the nation’s best O-line as a whole

It was widely reported that Coach Kap personally recommended Gumbo Von Sled to Dorrell. Wonder if that was true, or if perhaps they were just friends and Kap helped a friend while torpedoing CU at the same time. Either way, way to take care of your former players Kap! (if true of course)

From the stats pages on the official CU site:

Yards Per Rush in the 2000s

2021: 3.46
2020: 4.75
2019: 4.14
2018: 3.80
2017: 3.78
2016: 4.12
2015: 3.75
2014: 4.11
2013: 3.44
2012: 3.11
2011: 3.52
2010: 3.65
2009: 2.78
2008: 3.40
2007: 3.94
2006: 4.50
2005: 3.55
2004: 3.64
2003: 2.58
2002: 5.16
2001: 4.80
2000: 3.33

The real outlier there was 2006 when we had a good OL but couldn't pass a lick. Otherwise, it's pretty aligned that the years when CU can run the ball & not give up sacks, we've been pretty good.

I'd be very curious what the numbers/trend for all of FBS was during that same time period. I know that offense production has been going up, but maybe more plays per game and/or more efficient passing accounts for all of that increase.

It's not just more plays. Offenses like OU and tOSU are leading the way with explosive plays driving up points and ypa.

A top offense is targeting 6 per rush and 10 per pass attempt.
