Leavitt to Oregon

So who else plays a 3-4 and is their coach worth poaching? Honest question. Getting Edwards means we keep this going w/out Leavitt so who do we target?

Welcome to college football 2016. Money programs buy what they want, everyone else exists to help them look good......oh wait, getting it confused with the NBA

As fans we have a strong loyalty to the program. If CSU sent us all an offer giving us 75% off season tickets and free beer at all the games for switching allegiance, I don't think anybody could go for it and really have their heart in it. We want to project that kind of loyalty to coaches but in reality for the great majority of them it doesn't exist. They may love what they are doing, and love the kids they are working with, but in the end it is a job, and money and support from their employer is what talks. They know also that it cuts both ways; this year they may be the hero and in 2 years they are run out of town. It doesn't pay to be loyal in that kind of position.

wihtout reading the 13 pages since I last posted, has Leavitt confirmed thsi to the university or twittersphere yet?

JL tweeted some sort of "Thanks for the memories" tweet but the school and Mac are not saying anything. This is beginning to sound like one of those awkward moment things. Mac, according to KOA, is going to address something "later today." I'd love to know how all this went down but doubt if we'll ever know the whole story.

All I'm saying is that it's possible that much of the improvement was going to happen given we were going from playing underclassmen to upperclassmen (with some experience) and that we were poised to go from some of the worse DBs to some of the best. And that DB development was very evident each year he's been here. That is a position group I know something about. And we were getting much better before Jim Leavitt entered.

It's also a fact that HCMM decided pre-Leavitt to go another direction with the front 7.. He brought in a guy who knew how to run that from a scheme point. And I also think Jim L is a great motivator and leader (and I've said this many times).

But I also think that HCMM knows defense, has the front seven system now in place that Leavitt brought over along with the blitz packages etc, that combined with what I feel is the top secondary coaching in the CFB game (and that won't change), we can move on without Leavitt. With the right guy, this is a system now that survives any one assistant. This happens all the time where a coordinator leaves, and the next guy does just as good. Sometimes change after change.

I think it's now a system at CU and JMFL helped put it in place, but HCMM is a smart Defensive guy himself. This is what he's been trying to get to from the dog **** he inherited.
Yes. Remember, Mac moved Baer along because Baer was not accomplishing what Mac wanted. So Mac definitely has a vision of what he wants the D to look like.

It was a great run with Leavitt, but you can't blame the man for taking advantage of his opportunities to provide for his family in the twilight of his career.

You had me right up to this point. His family is more than provided for. I don't blame him for tripling his salary.

yeah...i have to admit that was kinda sappy... **** him and **** bailer.

seriously though...i could see JL finishing out his career as a highly paid DC at UO, or moving back into a DC position in the NFL in a few years. he just doesn't strike me as the kind of man who enjoys the media spotlight, glad-handing, and administrative responsibilities required by a HC at the NCAA-D1 level. He's a defensive coach/coordinator...end of story.

From everyone that would be in the know on this topic, JL absolutely wants to be a HC again.

I'm guessing I'm not the only one who took note of Leavitt's casual omission of thanking his head coach, or any coach for that matter, in his farewell tweet. Said thanks to alums, fans, players. No one else. That's interesting to me.

This news broke my heart, we just lost a great coach :(
Really interested to learn more about leavitt/mm dynamic, it did seems as they didn't really work together in unity. But damn, going to Oregon feels like a gut punch.

Don't let it break your heart. It's only football. (y)

Yeah. The omission was noticeable.

Not saying that we cant survive this. Just stating the obvious fact that we lost a big piece.

While I concur, my case is simply given budget constraints adn all the points I've made, Leavitt was a great 2 year turnaround specialist but his value is much higher to a dumpster fire now, than to us. We can stay very good on D, if we get a solid DC who can execute HCMMs vision. Baer couldn't. I'm going to guess that Tumpkin can.

JL wanted to be the HC at CU. He was putting himself in position to assume that responsibility if HCMM were to be fired. That dynamic in itself creates tension between the two. The team performed beyond anyones expectations this year, especially the defense. I am sure that JL realized that, in large part due to the success of his defense, that opportunity would not present itself any time soon here. Irrespective of that, getting a guaranteed $1 million raise per year is impossible to turn down. He has no real allegiance to this school. I do not understand the vitriol being spit at a guy that took a job and did his job excellently for a school we love, and then took that opportunity. Not one single poster on this board, if faced with a similar situation, would turn that down.

ONE MILLION PER YEAR more than what you already make

Now how he went about it, that might be an interesting story to hear....something tells me there really is no love lost between HCMM and JL

still think he went while the going was good. With all the talent / experience we are losing on D next season, the D will not put up the kind of #'s as this season. He would have taken a hit as not being the D guru everyone is speculating. I am not discrediting jl. He is a good coach, but he is not the end all kind of coach. HCMM will reload and the Buffs will be fine. The part that bother me the most? Is the timing and a lateral move to a conference foe.

After giving it a night to sink in + the Edwards news...I couldn't agree with this more, go Buffs.

People are upset because he made a speech a few days ago that said something like... "From the bottom of my heart, we coaches don't go into this because of all the money." And then he left for a huge pay raise to a rival team with a Nike CEO who throws millions around like halloween candy. It's not like he outright lied like Saban, but it comes across pretty hypocritical. I feel mislead.

You can't blame the guy for taking the money. That is a huge raise. Anyone would leave with that offer. While he is clearly a great coach, I'm not all that worried. We'll find someone good.

um... anyone hear clay travis's show... things not going well today...

Listened to the part of the podcast with HCMM. FIrst of all Clay Travis is a troll. 100%. Second I got the vibe that they had an agreement to not talk about other coaching jobs and Clay did it anyway. No surprise that HCMM was upset about it.

Plati has no business doing what he did. None. Clay has even less class though for posting about what ever Plati said.

I had no idea who Clay Travis was. Read the thread on Scout this morning. Sounds like he's an ex-lawyer who makes his money by trolling SEC fans. He asked MacIntyre if he was getting other job offers. HCMM gave a "no comment". Travis came back at him with a "so that's a yes" type comment. HCMM didn't like someone putting words in his mouth and said "no, it means no comment". I guess Travis tried to keep going with it and HCMM hung up on him.

Travis has then been using it to self-promote, calling it the biggest story of the day, claiming it means HCMM isn't ready for a big time job, etc. Knowing Plati and how protective he is with Buffs when he thinks media folks are being ass hats, I wouldn't be surprised if he exploded upon hearing the interview and went off.

Well crap. Is this all going to turn into a big **** show? Now is not the time. We have a Bowl game (finally) to get ready for. People need to grow the **** up.
