Official 2016 Coaching Carousel Thread - How safe is Kevin Sumlin´s job?

Can't realistically fire a coach that wins a division championship. Solid move by USC. Damnit.

You wouldn't be firing him, he was never hired as the head coach and he just got smoked by Oregon last week. What if they go out and get blasted this week by Stanford? Weird timing and USC is one of the best jobs in the country so settling for an OC like Helton is a huge win for the rest of the Pac-12 south.

I guess USC decided they needed some continuity after the sanctions being on their 4th coach in 3 years.

Well Haden made a big mistake last year when they moved on from Orgeron. I can definitely see why they are holding on to Helton.

Did they make a mistake in moving on from Orgeron or did they make a mistake in hiring Sarkisian?

Hiring Sark. Orgeron is a d line coach now, what makes people think USC should have hired him as a head football coach? He lost to Notre Dame and UCLA down the stretch.

Looking more and more like DeRuyter is going to survive at Fresno State. They didn't renew the OC and are probably gutting the staff. But the issue here is that DeRuyter is that they signed him to a new 5-year contract last year that they fully guaranteed. Financially, it would be too hard to fire him.

In other news, speculation is that Dino Babers (Bowling Green) will be the new UCF coach & that it sort of leaked but will be delayed until at least Tuesday when the buyout reduces by $100k. http://footballscoop.com/the-scoop-2/sunday-november-29-2015/

Exactly my point. I'm not saying Orgeron couldn't or shouldn't be a P5 head coach right now... just probably not at USC.

I actually think the Helton hire might end up being pretty solid, but he needs to shake up that coaching staff some. You cannot go through all the turmoil they went through at the start of this season and go the status quo route. Some outside hires (i.e, non-Sark hires) would do them a lot of good IMO.

I think it also speaks to the sheer amount of openings this year. Even a big "name" school like SC had to be worried about being left without a seat when the music stops.

Football scoop said they heard there will be massive shakeups on the staff I just think it is very underwhelming. Doesn't mean he won't succeed as that job has everything you want it is just a weird situation. Apparently the ex players are not happy at all.

Sounds like they reached out to Kelly and Del Rio. Probably reached out to others. Hardly a sure thing, but none of these hires are.

Helton will be starting on even worse footing than Sark. Better win this weekend.

Chris Landry said they also put out feelers to Whit and Shaw but got no where. Honestly, probably won't get much traction with coaches until Haden is gone.

I would expect Kirby Smart to Georgia to happen soon.

I thought they'd go Mullen. But it does make sense from the standpoint that programs usually hire someone different than they guy they got rid of.

Got rid of an offensive guy/QB guru... hire the defensive guy. Got rid of the outsider who was going to bring in fresh ideas... hire someone with ties to the program's history. Got rid of the player's coach... hire a disciplinarian. Got rid of a former coordinator... hire someone with HC experience. I need to keep that in mind when making my picks on who a program is going to hire.

In Georgia's case, though, wouldn't they have to say that Richt was very successful but that it had simply run its course after 15 years? I'd think that would make them more likely to go back to the same well. In which case, Smart makes more sense to me (i.e., hire the top long-term coordinator at the most successful program, but go defense this time instead of offense to shake things up).
