Official 2016 Coaching Carousel Thread - How safe is Kevin Sumlin´s job?

Venables is not that hot on being a HC. He will only go to a top program - he said he will only to a school where football is important (support) and they recruit top players. His kids are entering HS and will not uproot them except for a top job. Makes almost $1 million at Clemson.

Sarkisian is suing SC. They fired him because of a 'disability'. He says he had two two beers and two kinds of 'anxiety pills' before showing up at that awards thing.

Maybe he's got a stash of 'ludes.

I predicted this lawsuit when the firing happened. Expect to see both sides come to a settlement someplace in between what each side wants.

USC can afford to pay the money to make this go away and Sark knows that to pursue this thing to far could effectively end his career as a top level coach.

Settle on an undisclosed amount, Sark goes to a treatment program, and everyone moves on.

Pretty sure USC was perfectly within their rights if Sark was showing up to work drunk.

Can his attorney convince a court that alcoholism is a medical condition? A lot of medical professionals would testify that it is and the research would support them. At that point it would simply be a matter of convincing the court that he had the condition and that this wasn't just a one time or short term lapse in judgement, again I think that would not be hard to do.

Balancing the odds of losing the case and the potential negative publicity involved USC's legal counsel may be very inclined to recommend settling.

The lawyers here, especially those familiar with the California courts may have a different opinion. Be interesting to read it.

I don't think it matters, alcoholism is classified as a disability so you can't use that against them in decisions about hiring, promotion, etc. but if they are coming to work drunk that is cause for firing someone no matter what.

USC should be able to win this case easily. Depends how much they want to fight. Sarkisian claimed he did not have a drinking problem after the August incident and was told to seek help which he did not. Alcohlism usually loses as a reason in ADA causes.

Really? Sark's career is essentially ruined much like Leavitts was. Like Leavitt winning the lawsuit pays more dividends for his future than a quiet settlement. Statements made in open court better flesh out a chance to be a HC again somewhere.

Im not saying he's right, wrong, or has a case. Im just suggesting that if he doesn't try to erase or polish out this black mark he's not likely to wear the HCing headset ever again except at the most back water of places.

Jeff Tedford coming here as the oc wouldnt be a horrible idea. He probably wouldnt be too picky about any oc gig in the pac 12.

Didn't Tedford say no thanks to interviewing with us in 2012 as HC? Can't imagine he'd be interested in being just the OC..
Did he? That would be disappointing. Although I am far from certain BL will be let go JT was an intriguing possibility.

WVU apparently not completely settled on retaining Holgersen another year. Speculation that the decision may be delayed in order to reduce his buyout costs. I wonder if this might have factored in to the stories that Rich Rod was taking the South Carolina job and then he decided against it.

Rich Rod to WVU possibly? I thought he had some bad blood after he left for UM. That would be weird.

Leavitt's career is hardly ruined.

Long shot I would think....
Agreed. It was more of a Christmas wish list kind of thing. And for the record, I'm not in the "Fire BL" crowd. I think his work over the last 3 years warrants him staying. Others on the staff, not so much...

California law reads very pro employee on this, you can't place someone on leave and force them into treatment and then fire them. You can fire them (still significant risks) or you can force them to take leave but once they have been sent to treatment they are basically a protected class. Hayden ****ed this one up.

Thanks Abs, this is what I thought the situation was and is consistent with what a California labor attorney was saying on a radio show about the time of the firing.

And Pat Hayden screwing something up shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

BYU is rumored to be 'strongly considering' Ken Niumatolo (sp?). The option at BYU seems counterintuitive.
That might be a good move, long term. Short term it would take some adjustment to the dramatically different system.
