Notre Dame has not won a national title since 1988. They have lost eight major bowl (BCS or NY6) games in a row. Winning a national championship at Notre Dame would be the best work of Meyer's career and it would not be particularly close.

That's like saying Oklahoma and Michigan haven't won a National Championship in 20+ years, so winning at those programs would be impressive. I get there are academic hurdles at ND that the other programs don't have, but they get plenty of talent each and every year to compete at that level.

USC has better history, tradition, a bigger fanbase and is in the better location. Even when they weren't winning a lot they were still recruiting a top level compared to the rest of the country under Sark and even under Helton for a few years. You get any decent coach in there and they sleep walk to a top 5 class every year.

Agree to disagree, I suppose. I just see USC as a sleeping giant with too much internal dysfunction to awaken any time soon.

But history would suggest they do not have the talent to compete at that level. Not only have they lost a lot of major bowl games in a row, they have mostly been dominated (see: Clemson last year and Bama in 2012).

Winning a championship at Michigan would be very impressive as well. Even if you have a top 10 class, there is still a dropoff from those top schools to where Notre Dame and Michigan are at. USC can recruit at that top level very easily and they have shown they can even with questionable coaches.

Yeah that is possible, but USC will always be a good coaching hire away from competing for national championships.

Open Jobs:

Rutgers- Chris Ash is out (h/t dwyermj), Nunzio Campanile is interim. No firm news on the new Capo dei capi, or whether Campianile will be consigliere, but rumors abound Greg Schiano left the Pats last March to muscle his way back to New Brunswick (or is it Camden?), honestly, who cares where it is, it is still NJ. Chris Ash reportedly still alive and well. Joe Moorhead, Miss. St. HC getting some mention. UPDATE: Schiano looks to be the man in Piscataway. Rumors a deal is in the works are flying.

Florida State- Willie Taggert out after less than two years. (h/t vinniew_11). That was a big one. Kirk Herbstreit drops a nuke on FSU, then pees on it to put out the fire. See ahoelsken's post above. So, who's it gonna be? FSU has spent roughly $30M (h/t sinkratz) on coaches over thelast couple of years...that is a lot of oranges to sell. Odell Haggins, longtime FSU AC takes over as interim.

Possibles:

Harbaugh- UM is a mess. After tOSU dismantles them, it will likely be curtains for Jimbo. UPDATE Rumors of an exit strategy by Jimbo, then a strongly worded "I am staying" letter from Jimbo to player's parents. Almost as good as an indicator he is going as the dreaded AD vote of confidence. The win over ND is a nice scalp for Jimbo's wall.

Charlie Strong- Severe downward trajectory. Off to a bad start for an embattled HC.

Derek Mason- below .400 at Vandy in year six. UPDATE Rumors swirl, the Vandy AD is unhappy, despite a nice upset of Mizzou. Jeff Fisher, Dave Aranda, Willie Fritz, Ken Numaatoilolonamaalolliteamnaaomommlo, and last but not least, MikMac himself, getting some early mention.

Clay Helton- Sitting at about .640, not a good look for the plastic SoCal fan. UPDATE: Swann out, Mike Bohn in as AD. Bret McMurphy reproting Urban Meyer is target numero uno. Pete Thamel says look at James Franklin, and if not him, then: Bob Stoops, Kyle Whittingham, Matt Rhule, PJ Fleck and a cast of thousands. This one will be big. I wonder how Bohn will screw it up. And of course, Lane Kiffin has expressed interest...in the HC job, not some random coed, although you never know.

Matt Luke- Ole Miss always presumes their team should be more than it is, but even by reasonable standards, Luke is underachieving.

Mike Bobo- CSU may not be able to afford to let him go yet. When you look at his overall record, it isn't that bad by CSU standards. But the losses to the flagship, AFA, Boise and Wyoming weigh heavily. Wins at UNM, UNLV and Fresno could save Bobo, yet. 4-5.

Mike Gundy- Fans getting picky. A .670 HC not good enough anymore.

Chad Morris- Arky making noise about somehow avoiding Bielema's buyout, harbinger of firing Morris with the illusory "found money"?


Other News:

Show me the Money- Cali leads the way to player pay, starting 2023. Hapless NCAA and Conferences clutch pearls.

Sheriron Jones- The well-traveled QB gets caught in a solo routine. CU dodged a bullet. (h/t sewallbeach)

Arizona- Gets defensive about its DC and fires him, and one defensive AC. (h/t Jens).

Wazzu- Tracy Claeys "resigns". (h/t Tractor)

USC- hires Mike Bohn as AD (h/t ZKobalt), 11 other P12 programs chuckling uncontrollably.

Debatable. The situation at SC is toxic right now. Bohn won’t do much to make that better. He will take his orders like a good soldier. Believe it or not, the money for assistants is probably as good or better at Penn State. Truth be told, I don’t think there’s much of a difference between the two programs right now.

USC has new leadership in place both at the President and AD level so I don't think it is nearly as toxic as it was. The money is probably the same for assistants but again USC is on a different level recruiting wise than 99% of programs across the country and you are also talking about LA versus State College, PA.
 
Are we really debating if USC is a better job than Penn State and Oregon? Going against UM, OSU, Wisconsin and pesky Iowa make that job harder than it should be.

Oregon is fine with Nike buying kids allegiance but they still can’t compete against USC.

I’m sorry though, USC is way ahead of just about every school in the nation outside of Clemson, Alabama and OSU. Competent coach for a season and they’ll pull in top 5 classes with ease.

USC is like the hot girl at the party who just got dumped, is drunk as **** and a hot mess and she can point at any dude in the room and say, “I want you” and they’ll come running. Stupid analogy lol but it’s true, they have it so easy.
 
Under normal circumstances, USC is a plum job. I don’t think that’s the case right now. If I’m Franklin, I have a good thing going at Penn State. The USC job is a rebuild with a lot of expectations of immediate success.

Wisconsin and Iowa aren't even in their division. PSU is better right now. Historically? USC, and its not close.
 
Small school local post for the carousel, and yes I'm posting this because I'm a UNC Alum-Earnest Collins seems to continually do JUST ENOUGH to stay at UNC. They're 2-7 this year. This could finally be it for him up there.

He's comic relief lol. Not much else. I was a little confused on Mark Stoops' buyout if he were to leave Kentucky-given its $2m, I think he's the guy there.
