Official 2025 Opening Week - Georgia Tech Thread

I'm as frustrated as anyone with the missed opportunities but the guys on here saying GT is mid and their offense is mid are smooth brains and likely haven't played a down, particularly against a team great at something offensively.

This GT team ran over better teams than us last year and will again this year. Sometimes you face a team that is great at something, and everyone in the stadium knows what's coming but you can't do **** about it. You just hope you can slow them down and capitalize on any breaks you get. They block well. They execute well. Their scheme was good. Their plays work off of each other. I can't remember a time where I said "that was a bad play call there, we caught a break".

Being in this game bodes well for this team long term, especially considering the missed opportunities. I still think we're going to be salty as it comes together.

The good: I love being in a live Folsom. The energy after the back to back false starts was amazing. It was loud af.

We have a dude that can kick it out of the end zone.

There actually can be a running game if we commit to it.

The bad:

GT’s run game is as advertised, and Hayden King is really freaking good, but the defense was shredded for most of the game. It could have been a lot worse in the first half if it wasn’t for bad turnovers by GT. There was an improvement in the second half, but when it counted, they crumbled.

The playcalling is still wtf. Running the ball well, throw 4 times in a row. Um, why?

Pass blocking. I thought that was supposed to be improved? It was gross.

The ugly:

Salter ain’t it.
I thought Salter had all day to throw for most of his attempts. Maybe I’m just traumatized by CU’s Oline the last two years, but I didn’t think they were poor at all.

Big Al has spoken. Fire Pat shurmur. Was a terrible hire at the time of hiring, and even worse hire in hindsight. The people who defended it at the time should apologize. You know who you are (@Darth Snow being one of them)

“You broncos fans are just being emotional, your org sucks and Shurmur didn’t suck!” I remember reading on here
Not how I remember it. But I probably did say something mean about the broncos

Were you at the game? He airmailed numerous passes that would have changed the game.

Very inaccurate and terrible release. His fame is to scramble and run. He played poorly. We miss Shedeur
Salter and shurmur is just a bad combo. Shurmur has never had a QB like salter in his 30 years or so of coaching. Hes also had exactly one (1) good year in his 30 years (Vikings case keenum) where he had a horse shoe up his ass the entire year. They both suck and it’s a recipe for disaster. Would’ve scored 13 points tonight had it not been for a turnover on GT’s 30 yard line.

Their strengths are better off without each other

That game reminded me a lot of the K State game last year.

-Buffs went up early, but squandered opportunities throughout the first half and allowed the opposing team to gain control.

-We couldn't stop the run consistently despite getting strong pressure on the QB.

-Found some inspiration in the second half, but ultimately allowed the other team to clinch the game with heroics.

-Weird play selection and awful clock management and miscues during a desperate final drive.

I am left feeling a similar feeling as that game: we were outcoached by a more disciplined and experienced staff, but it still felt like we should have been able to turn the tide at home. It was a frustrating loss, but not necessarily a "bad" loss. We faced a superior team and didn't take advantage of our breaks. We made dumb mistakes, but looked capable of beating a very solid and fundamentally sound opponent.

The problems we have are fixable. I think we can afford to be patient and see how we fare over the next couple weeks; there is no reason to be distraught. The team has enough good qualities that it seems we could improve tremendously just by tweaking parts of our approach. Nothing seems so broken that I can't envision significant improvements throughout the season (e.g., it was obvious in 2023 that our oline wasn't gonna hold up; it was obvious in the vast majority of the last two decades that we never had more than one or two players who was a threat to opposing defences, etc.). Salter may not have strong accuracy, but there are aspects of his game that I can see flourishing if the team is well coached.

The clock management is a serious concern and very confusing. There are definitely some strange aspects to all of this that simply puzzle me. But I think we can gel and do some good things this year.

I see a lot more blame going on Shurmur, Salter and the offense than on our defense. The defense was abysmal. GT was routinely picking up 5 to 8 yards on first downs. Aside from the three turnovers, our defense could not get off the field.
Both had their issues, but the defense did better than the offense imo. 7 points off 3 turnovers in decent territory is unacceptable

I expected our defense to struggle in this game tbh, just given the difficulty of the assignment. I felt like if we found a way to hold GT under 30, we would have a strong chance. We gave up a ton of yards in chunks, but until the last TD, I don't think there were many explosive plays for GT. The d did not play well by any means, but I think that the fact that they cleared those relatively low bars, it's easier to direct more blame at the O.

The offense had far more question marks than the defense going into the game. They were erratic and seemed not to have much of an identity. A lot of those question marks are still there, while the defense basically did what I expected them to do as a bare minimum in this game. I've watched GT a lot the last few years and I knew they'd give us fits.

Supposedly some of the WRs liked a similar tweet about it being Shurmur’s fault not Salter
Salter still couldn't hit the roadside of a barn. Both of them can suck, it's physically possible
O/U 4 games before Leftwich becomes OC
Dear God under please

For those who want to see the original tweet. Went quasi viral on buffs twitter. This is the tweet Deion Jr. liked. Anyone thinking will petersen faked a like from Deion Jr is straight up coping
Both. Change both.

Another thing I've noticed is that my friends (and myself) who watched this game on TV seem to have more positive opinions than the people who were able to make it to the game. No idea why that is, but just something I've noticed, for whatever it's worth.

Was at game
Shurmur’s offenses are so vanilla and so bad
The OL was a strong suit, period. So much better thsn last 2 years and will get better every week. Thus, we could run the ball, so as much as I was a Salter guy, that is over. With a good OL and potential running game, I am now Team Juju. Shurmur sucks, but as mentioned never had a dual threat college QB. Shurmur is just not a college OC, and does not likely click with college kids. We cannot lose all this talent to the portal, and Juju can win the Big12 next year or 2027. That was horrific considering Shurmur had months and months to prepare a creative system

Well when you’re at the game you can see the reads the QB missed. I remember people having more positive opinions about Brendan Lewis who watched on TV than I did when I attended every game during that era (which is when I was in school). You have a Birds Eye view of the QB’s eyes

Guy said “it’s been fun to cater the offense to Salters strengths even though I didn’t want to” or something to that effect these past couple weeks and goes out and calls that game. A horrible horrible mistake to hire and retain him. Glad us buffs fans have woken up

Just not a fit
You can be so creative in college
Cannot afford to lose the talent

Exactly! I had GT scoring 28 points. I just had CU scoring 35. We didnt come close and we easily could have if Salter was what we all thought he was

Everybody watching the game knew we should have called TOs near the end, We could possibly have run 2 more plays. After the 1st play of our final drive, I had the ridiculous thought: 'did we decide to give up?'
Everyone except CP. I don't want to watch a replay this early, but during those last 30 seconds or so, the TV showed CP looking out at the field and, sorry, he looked totally lost and not in charge.
Which raises a good question: why didn't one of our assistant coaches say something to him. Who else could call TO, a captain?

The fact that happened in CP's 3rd year is concerning

He fugged up. His explanation was, we got out of bounds or maybe he thought we got the 1st down. Either way, we didn't and nobody seem to noticed. Him, Salter, Shurmur, etc but the media and everyone watching on TV. His explanation sounded like he didn't even notice the clock was still running. Can't have that. He will watch the the game over and ultimately be pissed as he should be. That said, this has happened every year at least once. I felt like, he was way too aggressive on 4th downs last year knowing the OL was trash. This year, he's been ultra conservative. Guess who wasn't, Coach Key. Went for it, every single time.

My, post drinking (necessary), summary:

GT has 27 Seniors who returned. They are supposed to be disciplined and good. They were.

Buffs OL looked very good. Gave up one sack (and that was on Salter for not reading the pressure).

Buffs running game is solid. You can tell the kind of backs Faulk wants carrying the ball. Explosive, shifty runners. We have them.

Salter looked like a deer in headlights, and made poor decisions and consistently threw over and behind his receivers.

Until Hart is fired, the middle of the field has always been exposed and will continue to. I re-watched the game this morning. Hart has his LB's 3 feet behind the DL at the snap. They are out of position and get taken out immediately. They dont read, they penetrate without reading and are out of position. Sound familiar, that is every LB since Hart arrived. It's a F'ing problem.

Shurmur. Enough said!

CP has never been exceptional at clock management. He has an NFL staff, Either add a clock management guru or learn to be more aware.

I think the rest of the team - DB'S, Edge rushers, WR's were open downfield, TE involvement, special teams, and loved the OL - were really good.

This was intended to be an absurd take. Kind of funny who agreed with it.

We should be able to get Lewis some reps next week. Salter was not good, but not bad enough where you switch to a 17-year-old after one week against a good team.

We had what? 10 new starters on offense? At least they looked cohesive. Salter missed opportunities. His game awareness is suspect. But I'm not going to write him off after one game. I think he will come with frustrations, however. But he didn't turn the ball over and seemed to be in command. He failed to seize on opportunities. Trying to sneak to right side of the line. That play that was supposedly a QB draw (wtf was that?). Those two throws are concerning - they were awful - but it's just two throws. Too small of a sample size.

That we got zero push on those two sneak attempts is concerning.

How bad was the defense? At the end of the day, we gave up 27 points. The last 7 kind of doesn't count. In that situation, they needed to sell out on preventing a first down. Otherwise, you want to give up the TD. It's a difficult scheme to defend against. And they have talented runners. Everyone cites the Georgia game, but they also ran for 271 against No. 4 Miami last year.

That drive where CU had the chance to take the lead (20-20) was a clinic in play calling idiocy. GT's DL was gassed. You line up and run at them as fast as you can. They were flat footed and it would have worked. So of course, CU throws EVERY play. Gives the DL a chance to take plays off and of course, Salter can't hit water from a boat. Normally, the shotgun is a formation, not an accuracy descriptor. Shurmur is the worst OC I have ever seen bar none. I'd sell my car to replace him Eric Kiesau.
You were on fire last night! I sent your tennis OC bit to my BIL. they all hate Shirmur cause of his stint with the Browns

First game overreaction from many here. Tough ass offense to defend and first game with Salter at this level. No excuses but those are reasons. GT is going to be a solid team. Not ACC contenders because Clemson is a legit Natty contender but GT will compete for second or third in that conference.

When CU is 3-1 going into BYU, the same people ****ting on them tonight will be pumped going into that game.
Almost 100% agree here, but I think GT is not quite on the level of SMU, Miami, and Louisville, but could knock off one of them.

We allowed almost 7 yards per carry. We allowed 320 yards rushing. You will never, ever, ever win when your defense is softer than warm butter.

everyone has said it but i will also.
Why do you move the ball running and then 3rd and 2 and try to pass?
The pass routes don't seem to make sense. They don't create other routes.

LB play WTF? no one filling gaps and containment on second level. Safety play was also lacking gap integrity and fill.

We still can't commit to a run game. I could not see a real identity on offense.

If a gt QB is running like that on us? This is going to be a lllooooonnnggg season

Honestly, I question if CP will watch this game or take away clock management concepts. He simply does not see it.
