Official 2025 Opening Week - Georgia Tech Thread

We allowed almost 7 yards per carry. We allowed 320 yards rushing. You will never, ever, ever win when your defense is softer than warm butter.
Dude. GT is a really good option running team.

I would have liked to see the D a lot tighter, but I will also be surprised if we see a team do that against us again this year.

This offense looked could have the smash mouth, ball control identity they talked up all off-season, except for Shurmur's apparent need to alternate series between almost all passes and almost all runs, and Kaidon's clear preference to chuck up a 20+ yard prayer over picking up key first downs by tucking it and running to wide open spaces a few times

I can see the potential in the offense. Welch and Price averaged 6/carry. The team ran for close to 5/carry (146 yards). Taylor is dynamic with the ball in his hands. The OL is significantly better. The defense was more bend don’t break and certainly not dominant, but made adjustments and played better in the second half. They need to get better at getting off the field and Livingston needs to adjust sooner.

End of the day, they are a relatively equal squad in week one as Georgia Tech. It was a tie game with CU having the ball and a chance to win with 4:30 left. Salter left many plays on the field that could have put CU in a much better position throughout. Someone had to lose and it was CU tonight.
Good post. Absence of WR surprised me.

I re-watched the game this morning
disgusted i feel sick GIF

I was also at the game, and have many thoughts. But specifically with Salter, I don't know if the offense isn't a fit, he isn't capable at this level, or just had some jitters.

He did miss many throws, but I will actually give him a break on the overthrow to Taylor on the sideline (Taylor came back to the ball after Salter broke the pocket, but he had his man beat and I think Salter thought he would keep going), and the overthrow on the long throw into the endzone was only just out of reach - that will happen. The other missed throws were just inexcusable - especially the overthrow to Price, he would have walked in. As a former baseball player, I get so annoyed when QBs drop their elbow and the ball sails high overhead. I was really annoyed by his throwing mechanics.

However, my biggest complaint was his overall lack of vision. I can remember 4 read options off the top of my head, and he made the wrong call on 3 of them. He also missed several wide open receivers in the middle of the field, including a wide open WR in the middle-left of the endzone on the play he took a sack and led to a FG (around 6 minutes left in the 3rd, I think). He also refused to tuck it and run on several occasions when he was outside the pocket and had a clear running lane.

GT let the Buffs hang around, and the Buffs didn't take advantage. Wasted opportunity.

according to search results, any player on the field can call timeout. Salter, Seaton?

this was not a 'clock management' issue, it was coaches being unaware, freezing up.

I think this team will straighten out a lot of the problems and have a winning season. Seaton was our only returning starter on O, not sure about D, but not many returned there either. GT had 7 returning O starters, including 3 OLmen

This was intended to be an absurd take. Kind of funny who agreed with it.

We should be able to get Lewis some reps next week. Salter was not good, but not bad enough where you switch to a 17-year-old after one week against a good team.

We had what? 10 new starters on offense? At least they looked cohesive. Salter missed opportunities. His game awareness is suspect. But I'm not going to write him off after one game. I think he will come with frustrations, however. But he didn't turn the ball over and seemed to be in command. He failed to seize on opportunities. Trying to sneak to right side of the line. That play that was supposedly a QB draw (wtf was that?). Those two throws are concerning - they were awful - but it's just two throws. Too small of a sample size.

That we got zero push on those two sneak attempts is concerning.

How bad was the defense? At the end of the day, we gave up 27 points. The last 7 kind of doesn't count. In that situation, they needed to sell out on preventing a first down. Otherwise, you want to give up the TD. It's a difficult scheme to defend against. And they have talented runners. Everyone cites the Georgia game, but they also ran for 271 against No. 4 Miami last year.
I'm toying with the idea that Shedeur against Nebraska last year was possibly worse than Kaidon last night.

Hard to say though, I've mostly blacked last year's game out of my mind.

Yeah, there were a lot of people who were done with Prime after that Nebraska loss last year. A lot of overreaction from the first game in which they were right there.

I thought the play calling sucked. With that said, I’m not confident that we can pick up two yards if the other team knows we are running.
We still struggle when the other team knows we are running the ball. Pat mixing it up had GT head spinning

I’m also not sure about whether the issues were Shurmur or if Salter just wasn’t going through progressions or what. I’m sure it’s both, but I saw a lot of commentary from social media that guys were open and Salter was just missing them. If that’s the case, as a 5th year QB going into his third year as a starter, that’s troubling.

I was at the game. GT impressed me. I thought they were really good (other than not being able to snap the ball early on). I feel decent about CU, I agree with most of what everyone is saying. O line was very improved, disappointed that they couldn’t stop GT more, although they did improve in the second half, etc.

One thing that I think was a big improvement I haven’t seen talked about is special teams was much better. Kicking the ball out of the end zone was so great. Punt coverage was good and we made some decently long field goals. I think the team will be fine and will win most of their remaining games. Things were choppy at the beginning of the year last year as well. It’s the downside of a transfer portal team. We will see the upside in a few weeks.

Without going into a deep analysis about the loss, all I will say is that there is absolutely no excuse for leaving two timeouts in your pocket during the last possession. And the blame for that is squarely on Prime's shoulders.

There is no doubt CP is a great coach at building up down programs and doing what's necessary to recruit the talent needed for that. And he's great at teaching life lessons to the young men he coaches. But there's also not much doubt that he's not a great game-day coach, and is absolutely horrible at clock management late in games.

That deficiency also appeared in last year's opener against N. Dakota St., when CU almost allowed the Bison to steal that game with a Hail Mary on the last play when they shouldn't have even had an opportunity to have the last possession but did because the Buffs were passing and stopping the clock with incompletions for some reason instead of trying to run out the clock with a ground game.

No doubt the team is down in the dumps today, and I would suggest that CP have Gary Barnett address the guys and point out to them that the most successful Buffs team he coached lost its first game against a program only the most avid CFB fans had even heard of ... and then when on to trounce the #2 team in the nation, win the Big 12 Championship, and were in position to win the MNC until stumbling against the Dux in the Fiesta Bowl.

There is still hope for a very good season for this team, but there is obviously a lot of work to do ... and it should start with having someone on the coaching staff grabbing CP by the collar and yelling "call a damn TO" if need be.

I was at the game. Nothing new to offer (but here I go anyway).

-As a unit, the O-line looked good against a quality defensive front.

-Our front seven got shredded by a team that specializes in running the ball with discipline. Our linebackers were making contact eight yards from the line of scrimmage in some cases. I don't expect to see another team that runs the ball as well as GT this season.

-Despite getting run over, the defense did enough.

-The offense (complaints about uninspired play-calling aside) would have moved the ball well if Salter could do (or at least had done) some combination of two of the following three things: 1. See an open receiver. 2. Throw accurately to an open receiver. 3. Run the ball when the opportunity presents.
