For CU, if it were me, and assuming he survived the interview deep dive, he'd be my guy right after Deion said no.
Is he the safest hire? No.

Age, Buff Heritage, and potential ceiling all do it for me. Youth is a detriment and benefit in his case.
Highest potential ceiling, but he'd have a lot of tough questions asked before he got the job.

Legend is that Bienemy used to babysit for Ryan when he was a toddler, so it's pre-ordained.
If there is a Christian God, he has given us Ryan Walters to restore the program.

Nobody is saying he is not a great coach. The question is he ready to take on the **** show that is CU football.

The reality is that we need a transformational talent. At his age and experience level, he probably doesn’t have those skills yet.

I guess my point is that most people already acknowledge he’s a really good DC but are maybe not comfortable that he’s ready to be a HC or at least not a HC at a place like CU that needs so much work to rebuild. Being a finalist for the Broyles is great and well deserved, but unlikely to change those opinions.

SINK used last years Broyles winner as a data point to prove that winning the award doesn't mean much. I pointed out that there are other past winners who have gone on to be pretty good HCs.

As for the rest...
1. How many transformational coaching talents are there that are also considering CU? Prime seems to be the only one.
2. How do you know Walters isn't a transformational talent. He's had a fairly meteoric rise in the coaching ranks, mostly all at the P5 level, has been a DC in the SEC and B1G and constructed and runs the nations top defense by the age of 36. Maybe Walters actually is a transformational coaching talent.

Eh, I think people are scared off by his age and his status as a former Buff. Full stop.

1. Right. There are very few transformational talents. Most of this board had ideas (Peterson, Mendenhall, Herman etc) but aside from Mendenhal, they weren’t coming to CU.
2. RW might be that talented and if we hire him, I think he would get a lot of support, but at his age and experience it would be pretty unusual for anyone to possess the necessary skills to rebuild a program that is this broken.

On top of that, his recruiting skills don’t seem to be as good as we need.

Neither one of those things would concern me. Embree was a long time ago and Walters has a better resume. We need to let it go. And he's older than guys like Dan Lanning and Sean McVay who just won a damn Super Bowl. His potential staff and recruiting plan are concerns, but not age and alma mater.

So, I'm definitely not advocating for Walters over Prime, I hope that clears up #1.

As for #2, I posted in another thread, but with this sudden newfound commitment to football from the University President, I'm wondering just how broken CU is as a program going forward. The institutional rot was mostly the Chancellor not allowing University $$$ to help fund the AD, along with strict admissions and transfer requirements. If those things are no longer issues, as they appear to be trending, this looks like a program that is devoid of talent, but has plenty of money and is willing to give the HC the resources and leeway necessary to do what he needs to change that.

Prime is a transformational individual who could take this program from 1-11 to Pac 12 Championship contenders in a couple years time, IMO, and definitely into the 12 team playoff conversation, but I don't think he is the only person who can get this program back to winning when given the proper resources.

Totally agree.

I think the Saliman effect is real and the changes that he seems to be driving is about 65% of the battle

  • Motivational and vision for program. Yes
  • Hire a good staff? Probably, tbd
  • Game plan and game day coaching? Not convinced he’s ready to go up against P5
  • Mentor other coaches? Big unknown.
Recruiting and vision alone can help correct a lot of CU’s current issues, but I don’t see the rest based on his coaching history. I hope he can develop those chops if he comes to CU. I just expect he can’t measure up against top 20 coaching staffs.

Think this is part of the draw for Coach Sanders. There seems to be an assumption, no matter how successful, that coaches at the FCS level (and maybe HBCUs specifically) may not be capable of game planning and game day coaching against P5 staffs. If he's is able to have success at a P5 school it could go a long way toward opening minds and doors for other FCS coaches.

He is a bright guy. The last three bullet points are all learned skills. He will figure those out.

Recruiting and motivating boosters is what differentiates college coaches. I have no doubt he can do both

It’s not his age, as in the number, specifically - it’s the fact that he’s never had to run a program, much less a program that needs this much work. He’s never had to hire and manage a coaching staff, establish an effective recruiting operation, or design and implement an NIL/Transfer strategy from scratch. And he’d be taking on those pressures at his alma mater which adds an additional level of expectations/pressure. So it might be more appropriate to say his experience is the concern, not his age.

For a lot of those reasons I like Prime and Herman much, much more and then maybe Grimes who has done what Walters is doing for longer and at bigger programs.

I also think he is smart enough to put together a staff that fills in his own gaps. I think, admittedly with zero knowledge, that recruiting charisma extends to assistants.

If he signs up to coach our team, he'll be first coach in 30 years I can imagine telling an assistant coach that if he doesn't get a commitment from a critical recruit that he shouldn't get back on the plane to Boulder.

TIFWIW but I was listening to Chad Brown on 104.3 The Fan this morning and he said that one of the problems with CU football is that there is a "significant element" of the CU community that wishes that they didn't have a football team and that they resent the fact the football coach is the highest paid employee.

Those are who I consider the "academic elites." From now on I am just going to use the term "CU Brass" so as to only offend the CU Brass!

Good administrators figure out how to deal with all of that, smartly, balancing the competing interests pulling in different directions. That’s the WHOLE and ONLY point of administration—management and development of resources. The problem is that CU has had HORRIBLE management.

The point of the “academic elite” dog-whistle is to conflate people doing the actual academic work and teaching with those who—very often—are entirely mismanaging it all. It is a political strategy designed—entirely—to overcome the fact that those who read and research are “dangerously” well-equipped to subvert a particular form of opportunistic demagoguery.

Prime comes and CU is featured on ESPN, Bleacher, si, Barstool, everywhere on a regular basis.
At worst, he brings twice the recruiting impact and fire that Tucker brought. Probably 4x the impact. Combined with the fact that we do have dope uniforms, the best mascot, best college town, cool stadium, top flight facilities, medical etc … it’s going to have a profound short term impact.
I don’t see it being that different from Riley at USC. Milk the portal, totally overhaul the roster, reset expectations across the board overnight and set the over/under at 8 wins next season. Get after top 100 recruits. No one else - no one - can turn this on a dime like HIM.
 
After reading this board and various articles, I have come to the conclusion that we will know everything within a few days of the SWAC Conf Championship. I don't believe that this is a done deal UNTIL after the game AND CU accepts the transfers that he wants.

Coach Prime is in the Geico commercials with Saban. You bet your rear end that Prime will only go to a place that he can do what he wants with the players that he wants. Prime won't set the goal of beating our "rival" Utah. Screw that, he will go for Saban and Smart (maybe even former OU QB Heupel- BUT- Colorado never lost to Heupel (as a player). In fact, Colorado was the ONLY Big 12 team that Heupel did NOT beat!
