Official CU vs Utah game thread 11/16/24

funny.
I was watching the youtube of Mark Johnson and Gary Barnett's game recap. I liked MJ's jacket and checked on the internet. It's listed as "The Cinch Concealed Carry Jacket". I'm guessing he's not worried about Ralphie.

That culture.

This is why I posted in the first half that we needed to get it together and turn this into a laugher.

Close games are fun for the fans and good for TV ratings but they also mean that your front line players are playing the whole game.

This team has a bunch of young guys who are going to be counted on over the next couple years who would benefit from real game experience, even if it is a blowout. Playing against a different team is simply different that practicing against your own teammates.

There are also a bunch of guys who will never be in the game unless it is a blowout or a bunch of guys get hurt. These guys are still working at practice every day (sometimes working harder because they have to simulate the opponent all week.) They work hard with no guarantee that they will ever get playing time. It means a lot to them for their family and friends to see them in a game even if it's garbage time.

Interestingly enough 10+ years down the road a lot of times these guys are more important to the program than they were as athletes. They go on to be successful in their chosen careers and big supporters of the program.

What are the odds that Charlie Offerdahl is highly successful in the future. His loyalty to the program will be strong.

What impressed me most today is that they FINISHED. With a little over 7 mins left, I was saying (and I don’t think I was alone) “here we go again.” Utes score and bring the spread to 11 points, then force a fumble. They got the Mo.

How do the Buffs respond? Interception, touchdown, 4 and out turnover on downs, touchdown. That is freaking DOMINATION.

LET GO OF HELL!

So you post “Let Go of Hell.”

And then you follow it up with that post.

I’m kind of confused.
Two posts with different meanings.

“Let go of hell” was in response to El Gringo thinking “here we go again” and reminding Buff fans to quit assuming the worst is going to happen.

The Lindsay post was just saying that Gus’ call of that run was better than his call of Hunter’s TD.

Duh! Because Travis is Bland

Did Becker just quit on CU when he transferred to UU or was he told Mata was the starter? (Sorry! Don’t want to start a kicker discussion! 😆)

Trying really hard to not let recency bias affect me but that was probably the best CU game I’ve attended since 62-36. Saw that it was a top 5 attendance game for Folsom and you could immediately feel that at kickoff. Felt like a few hundred Utah fans max (although I’m sure it was more). I met a fan in line to get into the stadium who was a Denver native but had never been to a CU game before. The family next to me during the game shuffled off at one point and the guy next to them slid down a bit and chatted with me. New Buffs fan, from Virginia, first time coming to a game. He said he couldn’t stop singing “**** em up, **** em up go CU” under his breath and his wife kept elbowing him for it lol.

Just a lot of fun and surprisingly emotional. Even at the points where we all held our breath, we still found ways to decisively control the game against a team that has kicked our asses with their physicality for years. We need Jimmy Horn back.

I have to tip my cap to the Yoots a bit, actually. It ended up being a laugher, but they didn't quit. In the first quarter, after we handed them a chance to get an early TD and they had to settle for a FG, then we ran off two quick scores, I thought Utah was going to fold. Their front 7 continued to bring it and their offensive line kept Wilson clean for the most part. I'm sure there was some emotional drain after the Holy War, but they kept coming.

Re: Charlie. I love it when the kids who work so hard get their reward. You can tell how much he's loved by the entire program, too.

Three statistics that caught my eye and tell part of the story of this win:

• CU ran 10 fewer plays than Utah but had 128 more total yards averaging 6.8 yds per play to Utah's 3.3
• YAC, especially Drelon Miller who had 63. How about his Viska inspired TD bulling his way into the end zone!?
• CU had 176 total return yards

Whit has been one of the best coaches in the nation for 15 years. It’s going to be very difficult to replace him

They are a shadow of their 2022 selves. Part of that is injuries, I think another part of that is that NIL is hurting them. But there's no denying that he had them ready to play against BYU, and he kept them fighting yesterday.

I'm not going to go back on what I said earlier in the week though, either. Him playing some guys that were clearly injured against BYU tells me it's time to hang it up.
