Official realignment thread - SEC formally invites OU and Texas to join the conference in 2025

like I posted above, I'm open minded to new data. I may be incorrect, but everything I see outside of this board reinforces my perception that USC is over-valued on Allbuffs.

here's a different take, based on social media engagement

not sure I agree, but regardless, brand recognition != brand value (but I suspect there's a correlation)

here's the first source I found in google on college brand recognition. it is based on global recognition, so if we're only interested in US this may not be as relevant. I'm struggling to find a recognition ranking based on only US.

What are MIT’s colors?
What’s Chicago’s mascot?
What’s John’s Hopkins’ stadium called?

early in this thread, someone posted the raw ratings numbers for the b12 and honestly that spooked me pretty good. without ou and texasssss, b12 games don't draw meaningfully more eyeballs than good g5 games.

if we postulate that raw viewership is the key metric in the world of streaming and the next round of tv contracts, i don't love our prospects.

footprint, time zones, growing markets and populations.... these all matter, but remember that population growth in the west is from transplants who bring their sports loyalties with them.

i live in nocal and i stream the Broncs, the Buffs, and the Dodgers, my 3 favorite teams since i was a kid.

at some point, we are going to need the university presidents to decide that there are some factors beyond eyeballs that matter to the formation and maintenance of a college football conference. i think the p12 and even the b10 care some. whether it is enough to keep us relevant remains to be seen.

also, honestly, if it does become an sec based 32 team mega conference, it would suck to be left out, but i am not sure whatever that thing is resembles college football and what i like about college football. i don't watch farm teams / development leagues in other sports so why would i watch the sec?
👆This.
It could make “college football” more enjoyable.

A couple other data points:

How many Heisman trophies are on the shelf in Eugene?
How many in Los Angeles?
When was the last time Oregon won a national championship?
How many times has USC won?
Funny how many people don’t understand this about Oregon.

If you're ever flown in/out of Kansas City, it is actually important information to share. Their airport is the absolute worst....the ****braska of airports if you will. A cramped, crowed, inconvenient pile of garbage. I flew in/out of that ****ing place monthly for about 3 years, and I have absolutely nothing good to say about MCI. Aside from a couple people who live in KC, I've never heard ANYONE say something good about that ****-hole airport either. Thinking about that place makes my blood pressure rise.

In summary, **** MCI Airport.
My dad grew up in Kansas City. He took my brother and I back to see it when we were kids. We to a Royals game, met Bo Jackson and George Brett. It was awesome.
We drove. From California.

Tell you what would get more eyeballs for the Pac12 in response to this $$$-driven realignment. Go full XFL. Call ourselves the PacXXXFL, get cheerleaders who are SI swimsuit models with swimsuit model outfits. Eyeballs would pay extra to skip commercials and instead take in some SI college cheerleaders during timeouts, TV timeouts, and commercials. It would fit the old Pac12 after-dark play, drive lots of $$$ and tons of eyeballs to the Pac.

That's how you get more $$$ and eyeballs and increase a conference fanbase.

I'm not saying it would be a good idea culturally or mentally for Americans and the world, and it would cross quite a few cultural moral lines for quite a few. But it would definitely increase $$$ and eyeballs for the PacXXXFL.
[sarcasm font]

Not saying this is a good idea... it's actually a terrible idea.

But it would definitely work.

Scandalous cheerleaders and no commercials is your solution?

I think this is one where we need to snip a small section for those that won’t click through...wow!

“This one story in particular is fascinating, as Clark said, “I had two occurrences with Coach Miles. My first was a phone call with him. It lasted over 30 minutes. He told me how good of a football coach I was and told me how he wanted to recruit our kids since we were the power house of Kansas. I could tell he was reading from a piece of paper. He went through his sales pitch, I then asked him a question about how he was liking Kansas University, and obviously he said he loved it. He paused… and then he started reading the same notes over and we went through the same conversation again, word for word. It was very weird. The next time I listened to him was at our Kansas High School Coaches Association clinic. I can’t tell you how embarrassed I was for Kansas University. The talk revolved around his Dr. Pepper commercial and how dumb his kids were. It was embarrassing.”

Some of these coaches who get reps as great recruiters in the SEC are doing little more than welcoming guys their shadow booster network secures. Like with Spurrier - he would blow off recruits coming in for OVs so he could go golfing. Didn't matter.

Allowed them to what? We didn't have **** to do with the SWC or what's going on now. This is all Texas and their ****ing outsized egos.
Growing up in Texas, the arrogance and ego are very real. I have a bunch of bonghorns fans in my family. Only two of us followed CU, my dad and I. We were both born in Colorado. Only other one that was is my sister.

I was born to hate the Bonghorns (born in OK myself) and Huskers. With the Huskers no longer what they used to be, I'm about ready to elevate my hate of UT above the Huskers because of what they are doing to CFB.

It was my Dad who introduced me to CU since he was a student and took me to the 1990 home games. Good times.

HORNS DOWN.

Careful, " Horns Down" might hurt their ****ed up egos. :D

I'm struggling with this "bonghorns" nickname. The implication that UT students are bigger stoners than CU studenta doesn't match my perception of the two student bodies.

You know Luke is the basis for the movie, We’re The Miller’s, right? He’s been in the witness protection program for 20 years.
