Considering that their SEC equivalent - Kentucky - made a similar move with Stoops it's not unprecedented to be able to parlay that conference money to keep a coach.
 
I’m not sure where the narrative that 2 doesn’t use check downs comes from. He’s hit Welch, Hayden, and Augustave on check downs throughout the year
It's very rare, and he frequently bails out and tries to extend the play. Of course he's checked down more than zero times, but his tendency is to seek the big play much more often than most guys.
