Other Games 8/28-9/1

Play-by-play announcers like this one on the FSU-Bama game make me miss the restrained and dulcet tones of Keith Jackson. This guy makes routine plays sound like they are successful hail marys.
Even Musberger. There's an art and special talent to make it feel like a big game from the lead-in while also not overdoing every play.

Bama had stops on multiple 3rd downs to get off the field only to commit a crucial penalty and keep an FSU drive alive. Simpson hasn't been great but he's not the only problem. They haven't been very good in the trenches on both sides. They went away from the run after a great first drive. Ryan Williams hasn't done much other than some short catches and the only playmaker today has been Bernard. If Alabama doesn't bounce back from this loss and make the CFP I can't imagine DeBoer keeping his job.

Just like with the Bear, with Schembechler and Hayes, etc. the legend grows when they are gone. Even if Saban had stayed it was unlikely he would have been able to keep up the pace but for the following coach even being as good isn't good enough, and very unlikely.
Wanting the Alabama job should have been the #1 red flag for Alabama in that hiring process, in a fascinating bit of irony.

Iowa offense still offensive. Saw a lot of sleeper picks on them making the playoffs this year. Down 7-3 at home in the 2nd quarter to Albany.

Assume they'll win and Ferentz will find his way to 8-10 ugly wins again in 2025.

Well ... guess we'll get to see if another vaunted (or over-hyped?) QB fares better than ol' Archie. Bryce Underwood starting for the Big Blue tonight (on NBC).

So, I guess Brendon Lewis, recruited while playing high school in 2019 by 30 minute Mel, is starting his 6th season as QB of Memphis. He's almost BYU old.

Brendon Lewis runs for TD, passes for another in Memphis' season-opening 45-10 win over Mocs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- — Nevada transfer Brendon Lewis threw for a touchdown and ran for another to lead Memphis to a 45-10 victory over Chattanooga on Saturday in a season opener for both teams.

Lewis rushed 22 yards for a score and hit Cortez Braham Jr. in stride for another 22-yard touchdown and a 28-3 halftime lead.

Greg Desrosiers Jr. opened the scoring with an 8-yard TD run and Sutton Smithmade it 14-0 with a 35-yard run on his first carry of the season.

Gianni Spetic added a 37-yard field goal and DeMarco Ward a 25-yard pick-six to lead 38-3 through three quarters. Frank Peasant bulled his way to a 12-yard TD run late.

Lewis was 22-of-28 passing for 199 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He was the Tigers' leading rusher with 81 yards.

LSU had a great game plan and their OC is calling a great 1Q (other than that run play on 3rd & long). Just shooting themselves in the foot.
