The 2021-2022 Coaching Carousel

Lake being that much of an utter disaster is right up there with Charlie Strong becoming a disaster of a HC for me. They were good coordinators and monster recruiters and I thought their floor was at least recruit up a storm with middling on field results, but man they sure ducked under that bar

anyway lets hire Lake as DC immediately. Immediately.

If you recall, he ran some (minor) smack about CU, when media asked him about the head coach opening before Tucker was hired. It was odd and unnecessary smack.

If anyone ever thought Jimmy Lake was the Dave Aranda holding up Ed Orgeron ... Err Chris Peterson as the HC - well they have now been thoroughly disabused of any such thinking. Jimmy is clearly pathetic and coach Pete was/is genius and Ed O. should quit coaching and do an album singing Christmas carols (in between chasing the cougars about of course). Aranda should be considered the NC coach at LSU in hindsight. And yes please send Kalani Sitake somewhere like UW ... YBU fans are way too amped right now. The drop 8 defense in the PAC12 would be splendid against the triple tight power rush game - ha.

Yeah. Petersen was one of the best football coaches in college football in the past 30 years. Absolute master of his craft. Lake did a nice job as his DC, but no better than any of the DCs before him.

Makes you wonder how much of that was Kwiatkowski and how much was Lake

I think Lake is still a monster recruiter himself, but it's insane he apparently de-emphasized it so much as a HC. What is it with top tier recruiters that get promoted and immediately stop recruiting?!
 
Lake didn’t deemphasize recruiting. He got good recruits who later decommitted. He lost a ton of talent in the portal. The recruits just weren’t buying what he was selling. It’s kind of easy to see through that false bravado. And even after all that he claimed to be only interested in intellectual players, as they are reading Plato while crushing bones. Does anyone believe that kind of arrogant trash?

Akron- Tim Arth out, (h/t DeNiro) 3-24 overall, replaced on an interim basis by Oscar Rodriguez. UPDATE: Eddie George could be the man (h/t DeNiro)

TCU- Gary Patterson gets the heave ho. (h/t BCS and Duff). Rumors abound TCU may do a coaching drive by on SMU and snatch up Sonny Dykes. (h/t ahoelsken) Jerry Kill to take over in the interim. (H/t DeNiro)

WSU- Nick Rolovich fired for cause over vaccination status. (h/t BCS) Bringing out some of the best recriminations between the antivaxxers and branch covidians yet.

Ohio- Frank Solich retires at the end of the year after 16 successful years as the Bobcat HC. (h/t Deniro) Health related retirement. Good for him to leave on his own terms.

USC- The big one. (h/t Deniro, also check Jens' USC Fires Clay Helton megathread). Mike Bohn is on the clock. My guess is Fickell, and then Franklin, in that order. UPDATE- Apparently, Mike Tomlin is not interested (h/t AlbasterYak)

FIU- Butch Davis is a gonna hang it up at the end of the year and retire.

LSU- Ed O out. (h/t Carolina Buff), apparently when Ed O isn't covering up sexual assaults and turning in unsatisfactory W-L records, he is propositioning random women at gas stations, unfortunately, the last lady of the pump was an LSU muckety-muck's wife. (h/t 14er). Who's gonna be? Melvin? Dave Aranda? Jakes Franklin? Joe Brady? Billy Napier? Ed O's buyout is $17M (h/t Creebuzz), about a dollar more than luminaries like HCKD. I would say Ed O will retire and go into broadcasting, but.....

UMASS- Fires their HC, (h/t BCS) Walt Bell out. (h/t DeNiro)

UW- Jimmy Lake fired. (h/t DeNiro, Serenity, Duff) $9.9Million payout. Justin Wilcox, come on down.

Not so fast my friend, trev Alberts restructures Frosty's contract and announces he will be back for 2022 (h/t DeNiro) OC Matt Lubick, OL Greg Austin, RB Ryan Held, and QB Mario Verduzco sacrificed that Frosty may coach another day. No word on if Herbie has been put on an ice floe.

VT- Hokie has consulted the VT burrito stand and Fuente may be out (h/t Hokie).

Florida- Dan Mullen struggling (h/t Duff) DC Todd Grantham and OL John Hevesey scapegoated by Mullen (h/t Serenity)

I’ll add UW’s next football coach will be hired by Jen Cohen, the genius behind that school’s ongoing dumpster fires that go beyond FB, MBB and WBB. Oh, and she made no attempt to fire with cause, now paying Lake $9.9 million to walk away. Kind of hard to understand what her appeal has been to UW.
