The 2021-2022 Coaching Carousel

I know that Temple's gotten absolutely raided for the coaches they've had that built such a successful G5 program there, but it's still pretty shocking how quickly they went back to being bad again like they were in the 80s & 90s. Such a strong recruiting ground when you can tap into PA, NJ and a bit of MD without having to go more than 100 miles for most of your recruits, so I think it can be turned back around quickly if they made a good hire.

Drayton is a pretty strong recruiter so I’d imagine that he has a decent rolodex.

I'm blown away by the audacity of some of the college greats to roll into the NFL and just be absurd

let us not forget the time Zach Thomas almost had to kick the **** out of Nick Saban for being an idiot

https://fansided.com/2021/01/21/nick-saban-dolphins-daunte-culpepper-zach-thomas-fight/

hilarious footnote given the apparent kicking of the kicker (link wouldn't work to bleacherreport)

Another prominent college football coach in former Florida and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is making the leap to the NFL this year as the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Glazer warned against employing some of the same tactics Saban did but doesn't foresee the same issues popping up for Meyer since he's "not one of those guys who tries to go after you and demean you."

Lots of work, if I missed anybody on the h/t's, sorry.

Maine hired Yale’s co-DC who is from Maine and played there.

Most head football coaches are assholes. Not being one is the exception.
i don't hear stories of most HC's being assholes to their players. the media maybe, the fans maybe, but being an ass to your players seems the exception.

At least for the last forty years. I guess guys like Bo Schembechler could get away with it back in their era.

Start thinking about how many coaches you believe win through energy and positivity. Carroll, Dabo, Fleck... there aren't many. Most are egotistical control freaks who dehumanize the people they manage. Mostly a bunch of messed up people with a lot of marital problems & drinking.

And having “employees” for whom quitting was very difficult.
The number of players in "the portal" may be more indicative of this than anything else.

Although, the cynic in me says that these 19-20 year old kids are just learning what most people learn when they have to start "working for a living:" most bosses suck. They almost universally live on a scale of suckiness; some are worse than others, but the "good" ones really are pretty rare and we often don't recognize that we have one until either they or we have moved on.

And having “employees” for whom quitting was very difficult.
Which is why only certain types of college coaches succeed in the NFL. In the pros, you've got to deal with employees who are wealthy adults with union & attorneys supporting them. In college, you've got mostly the Briles model of having players with no power under the threat of having their one opportunity in life ruined if they don't keep their mouths shut & obey.

I get that. I think where you and I are disconnected is that I see a wide space between "being an asshole" and having an abundance of "energy and positivity".

no disagreement that many or even most are messed up; I posted recently that I have a hypothesis that people exceptionally gifted in one area (e.g. coaching) tend to be exceptionally deficient in another (e.g. alcoholism)

In college, it’s good to be the king. He can rule with an iron fist over his fiefdom.

I think this has changed. With the transfer portal and immediate playing time after transferring, college coaches have lost a lot of power over players. This is a good thing.

It's definitely changing. And we've seen a number of college coaches who really don't like it.

Kind of hard to go from the culture you've had where you're king of your world to the point where you might have even a local or university police force & DAs who run things by you before processing a complaint against someone in your organization... to having to learn to lead & manage within a structure where you don't have that level of power & protection. Where others have rights beyond what you grant them & you can be exposed and held accountable for bad behavior.
