Besides the fact that he's a generational talent at CB that shouldn't leave the field on defense, there just aren't "packages" on defense for him to be used strategically like there are on offense. Klatt did a mock draft yesterday on his show where he had the Giants trading to 1 to draft Shedeur and Travis falling to the Jags at 5. What he said about Travis was that his stature makes him far less likely to ever be a WR1 in the NFL and that he's probably not even a WR2 since that means he'd be out there every offensive play as well. Most likely, he's an elite WR3 that comes in and plays 20 snaps/game and has 40-50 receptions every year, while being a perennial All Pro caliber CB.

PS2 is also talking about him being used for some snaps on offense in the same way next year. It is the best plan for Travis. WR is where he got hurt each time.

Justin Jefferson is making $35 million per year. Pat Surtain is making $24 million per year.
So what's Travis worth if he gives you a Surtain at CB while being like a Jaylen Waddle on offense? I figure that $40-50M per at 2024 scale.

We'll find out in 7 years after the 5th year team option is exercised and then two franchise tags are used on him as a CB only. Only at that point will he finally have the freedom to explore the market as an UFA and find out where that value lies.

3 thoughts on Hunter going CB instead of WR:

1. Teams are going to want him to be a CB first. Like everyone. True shutdown corners in the NFL are rare.

2. Travis can play CB with his current body shape. As Yak noted above, his current body shape is not ideal for a top flight WR in the NFL. Also it should be noted that Travis is not the most precise route runner, which scouts are going to ding him for that if he's trying to be a full time WR.

3. The money thing is definitely something that is eye opening, but if Hunter plays CB first, his career longevity probably goes up. His earning potential definitely goes up if he's all pro year after year. I think we can all agree that's possible as a CB. WR? I'm not so sure. So long term, CB might be the better financial play anyway.

Final thought - People seem to be skipping this, but the NFL season is long af. Travis played an insane number of snaps this year for a collegiate player, but it was a lot closer when you compare it to the average NFL DB. (Barring injury, NFL DBs play 1100-1200 snaps per season. Travis played 1440 this year.) Doubling up from that would be truly insane and at some point you do start to worry about career longevity. Close to 2000 snaps/yr in the NFL isn't just playing with fire, it's playing with a blowtorch on top of a 50 gallon barrel of kerosene. Looking into my crystal ball, I see him staying around 1500 next year - 1200 defense, 300 offense. Presuming, of course, he stays healthy. 🤞

I agree he will be a Corner, and a damn good one
I strongly believe that whoever drafts him will be wise and will be smart to have him play Wide Receiver for at least 10-20 snaps because it will help their team and it will be something special to see for that teams fans. If he can be a top lockdown corner and play some snaps as a WR and be effective (400-500 yards), then he should be entitled to some bigger money.

How many here would be OK with PS2 playing 10-15 WR snaps?

With him, I really think it just depends on where he goes. If it's somewhere that has a deep receiver room, he might get a snap here and there maybe. We shall see.

Keep in mind that on most teams in the league he is going to be the most talented available player at WR, even if only playing a limited number of plays. He will be the guy who provides the threat of turning a simple play into a TD at any time.

He has proven that he can play extended snaps and maintain effectiveness. You don't play him other than obvious passing situations so he isn't getting beat up trying to block. The defense spends all week preparing for the full time offensive line-up but they also have to prepare for a limited number of plays from a highly dynamic player. Do the slide their CB1 onto him? Do they double him when he is in? Do they play zones deeper because of his speed? Blitz more to try to force the QB to get rid of the ball?

And a lot with TH will depend more on having a coach who is willing to do things differently, willing to not just stick with "the way things are done."

PS2 is an amazing athlete and yes if he wanted to play some offense and could do it without disrupting his defensive preparations he may offer the same disruptive influence as listed above. It's apples to oranges though because as good an athlete as PS2 is we have nothing to indicate that he has the kind of ball skills that TH has. He doesn't have the catch radius, the hands, the natural instincts as a runner, at least not that we have seen.
