We now take you to Ann Arbor Michigan

If they're smart, they're thinking about how penalties levied against USC and Miami respectively caused serious devaluation of the Pac-12 and ACC.
Eh, the B1G has already cemented itself as conference 1a/1b and has the biggest media deal in the country for the next 7 years. Any B1G imposed penalties on UM won’t have any effect on the conference’s prestige, but doing nothing will (already has) create a public narrative that there are no penalties for cheating and that Michigan is above its own conference.

There will be penalties, but the B1G is not going to bar a potential national champion Michigan from this year's postseason or do anything else to step in the middle of the UM-NCAA proceedings. Nor should it.

The BIG has been carrying the water for Michigan for decades. The head of officiating, Honig, had a fricking shrine to Michigan in his office. Witvoet and Lemmonier were also Big Ten officials with a well-known Michigan bias. It would normally manifest itself with a well-timed holding or PI call, or a crooked first down spot against a lesser BIG team that was close to beating Michigan. Once you see it, it becomes obvious.

This is why I don’t see the BIG doing anything about it. The BIG will protect Michigan at all costs.

I think even you underestimate what is happening and how other coaches and teams feel about this. Other programs and coaches were affected. Outcomes were affected. Jobs were affected.

Of course. Would be shocked if they did anything other than table the decision until the spring.
Too much public pressure to not do something. It’s going to taint the CCG and nobody outside of the UM fanbase is going to recognize Michigan as legitimate B1G champ, and it’ll all be viewed as a sham.

But, maybe they’ll sit on their hands and pray tOSU beats them, which is the only way this kind of goes away, IMO.

They don’t care about what the public thinks. They want their playoff money. There’s a very good chance that they get two teams in the CFP if the TBG is close.

If they do anything in the near term (doubtful IMO) my guess is it will be a fine or Harbaugh getting suspended for a game or 2 this season.

Call with the ADs happening today I believe. It needs to be a University Presidents decision, IMO
University Presidents? Why? This isn’t something those guys have any expertise with. ADs, sure. But I don’t believe the Presidents need to be involved. Let those guys run their respective schools. We saw what getting University Presidents involved with athletic department matters produced with the PAC 12.

He got 4 games already this year for the other scandal. And this one seems worse.
This one is worse, opposing coaches would argue that this is cheating that has a direct impact on the outcome of games.

Agree with @manhattanbuff though, UM is one of the bellcow programs of the B1G. They can talk about equals but some are much more equal than others based on how much value they add to the conference financially.

The conference office is going to do everything they can to make any action on this wait until after the NC game, then they are going to do their very best minimize the impact that it has on Michigan and on the conference as a whole.

Eventually do we see wins vacated, almost assuredly. That is an almost meaningless penalty, everybody knows who actually won the game, putting it in the record book with an asterisk changes nothing as far as the fans are concerned. Again does anybody look at the Danny Manning/Larry Brown Kansas basketball teams as a bunch of losers because the wins were vacated? Nobody cares. And most importantly, they don't turn around and give the TV networks and the ticket buying fans back their money.

One thing that could get interesting in all this, and @manhattanbuff would know better than the rest of this is what happens if the sportsbooks start taking Michigan games off the board not knowing how they are going to respond now that they don't have the full advantage of knowing the signals and potentially at any time Harbaugh and/or assistants could be suspended?

Because the conference commissioner is not beholden to the coaches or ADs. He answers to the University Presidents who ultimately decide on things like conference media deals, coaching hires/firings, and matters that could be considered “lack of institutional control”.

There’s a lot of money at stake but there’s also reputations, jobs, media companies, and other conferences affected.

This entirely,

Ultimately this isn't about football, it is about the 100's of millions of dollars that the conference collects and distributes to the schools because of football, and that money is the business of the Presidents.

The Presidents who are effective leaders almost certainly work closely with their Athletic Directors before and even during the meetings but ultimately it is the Presidents who make the decisions.

It feels like there are still people who don't feel this is a big deal. It's a huge ****ing deal. Harbaugh was suspended for 4 games for meeting with and buying a recruit a burger during covid. This is a multi year, on-field cheating scandal that affected outcomes of games, for both Michigan and potentially future Michigan opponents they weren't even playing. This is as bad as it gets if they are able to provide the requisite evidence. Of course this is a University President matter.

All of which means that they would almost be forcing Michigan to go into firing Harbaugh for cause which almost always ends up with the lawyers.

These university presidents by nature carry a degree of respect for the position of the other presidents, they know that under different circumstances it could be them, and that the precedents set could absolutely impact them. They aren't going to do anything quickly.

I’m sure this was all just amazing film study on Nebraska’s playcalling tendencies.

Also: It’s about time Fox sent its face of college football into public to defend Michigan
I normally like what Klatt has to say but he is simply wrong on this one.

This is something that goes to the credibility of the game. This isn't giving a recruit a hamburger or even a car, this is blatant on the field cheating that has a real and significant impact on the game.

If this isn't responded to with significant consequences then you might as well just not bother having rules.

The most valuable property owned by his employer within his space is in jeopardy of becoming a mediocre asset for a period of time. It's appropriate that he's calling for a measured approach.

I think we’ll find out real quick how big a problem this was. If Mich was so reliant on the stolen signs, they are going to look discombobulated against any decent opponent the rest of the way. Maybe sort of like how they looked against TCU in the playoff. So one game like that and they’ll be dropped significantly in the playoff rankings and the punishment won’t be as big a deal.
