Pac-12 hires MGM's George Kliavkoff to replace Larry Scott as commissioner

I was underwhelmed by the name at first then his achievements came up and now I'm impressed.

This doesn't appear to be a departure from what the conference is trying to do.
The move makes me think the conference leadership believes in what they want to get done, but they needed somebody with the balls to do it.

I guess we will see.

I’m not sure why this hire would be upsetting to anyone. Seems like a solid choice that has a fair amount of experience around big media.

I also don’t understand the “shocking” comment from Wilner, unless he was floated another name. This hire is neither shockingly good nor shockingly bad. It seems like a reasonable hire.

Definitely some potential with the direction NCAA is going around NIL and sports betting. Vegas connection is great. He seemed to also be heavily involved in the streaming platforms. Visibility will be a huge aspect. We will see, but I'm more encouraged than I was expecting to be.

Lady Gaga jokes aside, I could see him using his connections at MGM to get big concert/ tours into these athletic facilities as a way to boost revenue in the offseason and help promote campus recruitment( for athletics and general students) and student life.

At first, I was like “who the Hell is that?”. After reading up on him, this seems like a very solid hire that could pay nice dividends to the member schools.
The Las Vegas connection is a plus, too. We really need to leverage the fact that the entertainment capital of the US is smack dab in the middle of our conference footprint.

Larry Scott would still be commissioner had he not screwed up the DirecTV negotiations. Outside of his bungling of P12 Net (which I’m not minimizing), he did pretty much everything the conference asked of him. He really seemed to lose all interest once that house of cards fell on his head.
I’ll be very interested to see how the situation with P12 Net is handled going forward.

I would imagine folded into Hulu.

So the P12 won't be paying 15 gazillion dollars a square foot for office space anymore?
