@The Alabaster Yak mentioned Kent State's HC in another thread. I don't know much about him at all, other than he doesn't have any experience at the P5 level or within the traditional CU recruiting footprint.
It's easy to be underwhelmed by his record at Kent State, but they schedule OOC like CU used to: Anyone, anytime, anywhere. They play one OOC cupcake per year then hit the road to get their asses kicked by 3 P5 programs. Since he's been there they've played the following OOC schedules (rankings from the week they played):
2018: @Illinois, @11 Penn St, @Ole Miss
2019
ASU, @8 Auburn, @8 Wisconsin2020: No OOC
2021: @6 A&M, @5 Iowa, @Maryland
2022: @Washington, @7 Oklahoma, @1 Georgia
That's right- since he's been there they've played 7 out of 12 OOC roadies against teams ranked in the top 11.
Next year they get a break because they only play 1 P5 team (Arky) along with UCF and Fresno St.
It resumes in 2024: @Pitt, @Tennessee, @Penn St

The bolded part is what intrigues me. He's turned them around, with next to no resources, and on top plays a ridiculous OOC schedule every year. Yep, you can’t just look at the W-L record without context. The Kent State coach is like the reverse of Barry Odom, whose tenure at Mizzou is far worse than the W-L record indicates. One thing from the footballscoop podcast on the CU search-they mention there are sitting P5 coaches who have been in their jobs a long time and might be open to a change. This is a job that these types of guys look at and say "Yeah, I'd have a quiet conversation with Colorado. Maybe there's a fit there."

He was 32-18 in 4 years at texas, a 8-4 / 8-5 record every year. He only coached two years at Houston and with Texas's talent advantage over virtually every team they play, it's valid criticism BC he won't have that talent at boulder
If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule? If Illinois is a top 10 defense at the end of the year, then we would be idiots for not considering him due to an arbitrary reason. Our only "rules" should be- has he experienced success, does he understand today's cfb landscape, and does he have the energy for restless nights out on the recruiting trail.
Also, to everyone saying things like, insert coach would never come here, please stop. There are a handful of up and coming coaches who wouldn't come to cu because their value is too high, and I haven't seen any their names sincerely suggested. If you were correct (you're not) midnight would've never been hired.
Tuscaloosa isn't for everyone.
