Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

The Cleveland QB room is interesting to say the least.

Joe Flacco is a fan favorite from the 2023 season, but hasn’t been a full time starter in the league since 2017. He is ancient, but an experienced guy that would be good mentoring the young QBs.

Kenny Pickett is a former first rounder that washed out in Pittsburgh and was a backup for Hurts in Philly. He has 20+ starts in the league and is still young. Cleveland spent a minor amount of draft capital to trade for him.

Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are rookies.

Deshaun Watson will likely be on IR all season and then cut.

The QB room is usually three in the NFL. Who do you cut? Flacco is past his prime but would be a good mentor and may be able to hold the fort for a year as you bring the rooks along. Do you cut Pickett who you just traded for?

You normally might be able to stash someone on the practice squad if they can clear waivers. Can either Shedeur or Gabriel clear waivers? Doubt it.

Maybe you bring both rookies through training camp and then trade one of them or Pickett for a QB desperate team?

The last one is most likely IMO. Give them both a start in preseason, make your internal grading, and then see what kind of trade offers you get.
 
Not sure if it means much but they declined to pick up Pickett’s 5th year option. Feels like the preseason will be Pickett, Gabriel and Shedeur each getting a start with at least one getting cut, if not two.

Ask any RB if they enjoy running that Shotgun handoff from a stand still?
Garbage option for a good Running Game
Get under center and run stretch zone or have more ball faking with fly motion or anything that helps move the defense eyes
He had Pat Shurmur, and it felt like if the goal was to also help SS get top draft opportunity, then go more Pro, even with a weak OL, be creative

College football is almost always run out of the shotgun and tons of teams have good rushing attacks out of the shotgun, it isn't a shotgun issue. No desire to run the ball, bad OL, mediocre RBs - not a good combo

I am almost certain Hassan made that call. Listen to the phone calls they had with Gabriel and Fannin. It was all “we’re excited to have you, can’t wait to get to work, we want you” etc.

Then listen to their call with Shedeur. “You gotta get here and earn your keep. Make sure you work hard”

They aren’t trying very hard to hide it

There was an interview with Terrell Davis or some other big time RB, and he said how most of them do not understand the use of Shotgun draw plays where the back has no chance to build up any momentum or to be able to set up the defender. Yes there are some successful teams, but there are proven ways to just run the ball and no need to rehash that we were the worst running team pretty much ever

Whether you agree or not running the ball in cfb is overwhelmingly out of the shotgun, especially with the evolution of the RPO. Will see some offset formations & some pistol but being under center makes it much harder to run RPOs and reduce the # of options within the play.

The coach has an obligation to secure private information that is in his control. This means no "accidental" leaks and his son knowing that anything he might incidentally see is to be kept quiet.

The son doesn't get a pass because he is a "kid." If you told him he requires additional supervision and restrictions because of his age he would certainly get upset. If he's old enough to make those decisions he's old enough to be responsible for the consequences.

The team is responsible for supervision of it's employees. An appropriate response from the league would be to take away a draft choice, maybe a 5th or around there. Let the coach explain to the management why his lacking concern should cost the team a draft choice.

Meanwhile though with the narative about him be ego driven and self-centered he is stuck not reacting which won't gain him anything among the haters but if he does respond with any anger the will be the one who gets portrayed negatively.

And while the league has a contract with the players union that includes some limits on punishments available for players there is nothing like that for coaches. As long as it doesn't violate state or federal labor law the league can levy whatever consequences on a franchise and on coaches it wants to.

As you mention it is PII. A team or coach would have a hard time arguing in court that the league is not within it's authority to impose a punishment for violating the privacy of a prospective player.
 
As I think a bit more about SS's slide, there are many factors at play. A few thoughts I centered what things would an NFL draft team look for in a polished pocket passer coming out of college? I think some of it was the offense we ran, blessed with excellent receivers, but also not a running game or top notch line. I look almost entirely at 2024, since Shurmer was here the full year and the line was somewhat serviceable for stretches. I list the following boxes for a pocket passer:

1. Throw good balls to all three levels w/ vertical passing game--SS showed this.
2. Throws well on the run--SS mostly showed this.
3. Bubble screen game--SS checked this box.
4. Avoid turnovers and not get overwhelmed--SS showed this. SS started a few games slow but for the most part came on in the 2nd half. We won 9 games.
5. Make some plays with legs--SS mostly checked this box.
6. RPO, Play Action or use deception--we didn't really do this much at all.
7. Dumping off good balls to the RBs on time with some space--we didn't run this.
8. Throwing to the TE--we didn't do this. For a pocket passer, this would be something most NFL teams would really look for, even if it was forced. They would want to see that check down executed to the TE but also the slot as well. TH being in the slot made this much easier at times.
9. Getting the ball out fast/hitting the hot read--SS did not really show this too much, some with the bubble screens/slot; but many of CU's plays were slower developing.
10. Effectively direct a running game mixing run and pass audibles. Mostly CU/SS checked into the big play and SS did not show he was captain run game adjusting runs one way or another. Peyton Manning won Denver the SB playing over BO (who played good at the end of the season) because he could direct the run game so well even with a rag arm.
11. Improvisation--SS showed he could extend plays, sometimes making big plays, but sometimes eating a bad sack. This is something some young QBs just excel. I don't think SS showed a bunch of this trait.
12. Throw the ball away, avoid getting hit, and the huge negative plays--we did not do this.
13. Going through progressions and making tough reads--I think this was probably a mixed bag of sorts. I'm not sure how the NFL teams evaluated this one way or another; but for those NFL front offices the broken down film would not lie.
14. Play under center--we didn't do this much.
15. Show excellent pocket presence/be nimble in the pocket. The Oline limited this a bunch, however I saw on occassion SS stepped up in the wrong place or abandoned a pocket early. If CU had one solid side of their line, I think SS might have been able to demonstrate this much better.


I do think with time, learning, hard work and a legitimate chance, SS can still develop. For what it is worth.
SS should not have slid as far as he did, as he was tough, successful and a winner last season.
