Why not a dreaded point guard? I thought Campbell was a very good college player. If Hammond leaves, we need 2 guards, preferably pgs - 1 MUST be a pg. The other can be a true sg, or the dreaded combo guard.

They don't have that on KenPom for individuals. At least not that I could find (seems like they used to).Now do it for dRtg and tell me anyone in the convo is even close to LL.
Nique's offense being worse than LL makes the fact we won as many games as we did even more amazing. They don't have that on KenPom for individuals. At least not that I could find (seems like they used to).
Anyway, Sports-Reference does do Win Shares and Box Plus-Minus. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/colorado/men/2023.html
Here's where everyone ranked:
Win Shares (this gets influenced a lot by the number of minutes someone played)
1. TDS at 4.4 (1.9 for Defensive Win Shares)
2. KJ at 3.1 (1.7 DWS)
3. LOB at 2.4 (1.4 DWS)
4. Hadley at 2.0 (1.1 DWS)
5. Hammond at 1.7 (1.1 DWS)
6. Lovering at 1.6 (1.4 DWS)
7. Ruffin at 1.3 (0.7 DWS)
8. Wright at 1.3 (0.9 DWS)

10. Nique at 1.0 (1.4 DWS - his OWS was negative 0.4)
11. Allen at 0.0 (0.1 DWS)
Win Share Per 40 Minutes (this didn't have defense broken out, but follows the numbers above & equalizes PT)
1. TDS at .164
2. Ruffin at .151
3. Hadley at .143
4. KJ at .136
5. LOB at .130
6. Wright at .096
7. Gabbidon at .095
8. Hammond at .094
9. Lovering at .081
10. Nique at .053
11. Allen at .044
Box Plus Minus (whether the offense and defense performed better or worse when a player was in the game)
1. TDS at 7.1 (2.2 DBPM)
2. Ruffin at 5.7 (3.3 DBPM)
3. KJ at 4.9 (2.3 DBPM)
4. Hadley at 4.9 (3.1 DBPM)
5. LOB at 4.1 (2.9 DBPM)
6. Wright at 2.7 (2.5 DBPM)
7. Hammond at 2.0 (2.1 DBPM)
8. Gabbidon at 1.8 (3.3 DBPM)
9. Allen at 1.6 (2.2 DBPM)
10. Lovering at 0.8 (3.1 DBPM)
11. Nique at 0.0 (2.4 DBPM)
Overall, these data also point to the 5 guys leaving the program being the 5 worst performers on the roster (it's close - Wright may rate a bit better than Hammond). Defensively, though, it's a different story. If we look at Defensive BPM then guys like Gabbidon and Lovering become Top 3 players. And on Defensive Win Shares, Lovering and Nique are in a 3-way tie for 3rd on the team.
That's the best I can do with a defensive focus on Advanced Stats. On the Lovering question, it looks like the answer is that his defensive impact was not great enough to overcome the negative impact he had on the offense. Nique similar but even worse since his defense wasn't impactful and his offense was worse than LL's.
Name the last combo guard at CU that wasn't a complete waste of a scholarshipDid you watch FAU last night? They have dreaded combo guards at every position.
Derrick White, Carlon Brown, Alec Burks and Cory Higgins were pretty good.Name the last combo guard at CU that wasn't a complete waste of a scholarship
I'm guessing you meant combo guard - but I can't find anywhere that lists him as anything other than a true PG, which is how he plays.
So, no one that's been on our roster for over 5 years. Got it.Derrick White, Carlos Brown, Alec Burks and Cory Higgins were pretty good.
In that timeline, the only guys who might fit that description are Parquet, Kountz and Namon Wright. I wouldn't call any of them a waste of a scholarship. So, no one that's been on our roster for over 5 years. Got it.

I didn't know whether to call Gattling and Daniels combo guards. Heck, I didn't know if the guys I listed for recent years really fit. Where Tad has not been good has been with bringing in SGs to be 3 & D guards, whether as preps or transfers. I'm opposed to recruiting traditional SGs and much prefer combo guards who have PG skill sets, but maybe not PG mentality. I think Del Brown and Dom could also be called CGs, especially Dom since he played both PG and SG while he was here. I don't know what to call Yaz, but I think he was recruited to be a PG here.Yaz, Gattling, Maddox Daniels.
The response was to @BIGEZ321 and his "FAU plays 5 combo guards, thus they must be the best EVER".
We have had, at best, mixed luck with 1 or 2 on the roster.
I guess I count anyone who regularly plays as both PG and SG as a combo guard.I didn't know whether to call Gattling and Daniels combo guards. Anyway, to the post you were responding to, I think FAU's base this year is 1C-4G and it looked to me like the G positions are pretty much interchangeable. All 4 can shoot and also initiate the offense as the guy who brought the ball up the court. Interesting team.
We haven't had much of that, then.I guess I count anyone who regularly plays as both PG and SG as a combo guard.
FIFY againWhy not a dreaded point guard? I thought Campbell was a very good college player.

And for the record, I'd trade any player on the current roster, and maybe 2, for a pg like him.
Comb guard. I get it. Cause his hair.FIFY again
Best ever??? Stop it.Yaz, Gattling, Maddox Daniels.

I think of Spencer Dinwiddie and how he plays both off the ball and sometimes as the primary ball handler depending on lineup and sets.My gut reaction when I see "combo guard" is a guy that doesn't have the ball skills or mentality to be a true point guard and doesn't shoot well enough to be considered a shooting guard.
Me too. Unless it's someone like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Suggs, Amari Bailey, or Ja Morant. My gut reaction when I see "combo guard" is a guy that doesn't have the ball skills or mentality to be a true point guard and doesn't shoot well enough to be considered a shooting guard.
I think it was the Rooney story the other day that had Tad saying he was surprised, and down in the dumps for 24 hours.Sounds like Tad was as shocked as anyone that LL entered the portal. This is a strange one indeed.

He can focus on getting the team into offense and setting the table for others or be called on to be a catch & shoot guy.
There is a point when the guy is talented enough that I think that he could actually do either job well, but we aren't typically in the running for them.Me too. Unless it's someone like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Suggs, Amari Bailey, or Ja Morant.
On average, we're going to add 3 guys a year. That should be a guard, a wing and a forward. Considering that wings can handle a bit and both our wings & forwards should be shooters, I'd definitely shade the guard signings towards PG skills rather than SG skills. There is a point when the guy is talented enough that I think that he could actually do either job well, but we aren't typically in the running for them.
First ever returning starter tad has lost to transfer. And it was a surprise. It's gotta mess with himI think it was the Rooney story the other day that had Tad saying he was surprised, and down in the dumps for 24 hours.
I'm pretty bummed he's leaving. I think most followers of the team had him developing, making steady progress, and becoming a factor as an upperclassman, which he was doing. Pre-portal, it always seemed like folks would turn on the teevee during March Madness, and there'd be a tall, rangey, senior for, say (dating myself here), University of Northern Iowa, who had presence in the middle. Swatting balls away, with a decent scoring threat around the rim. And everyone would say, "Who the hell is that guy?" With more work, that's what I see Lovering becoming. Unfortunately, it'll be somewhere else.
Tad was always talking him up too. If he didn't know it was coming that's going to hurt for a long time.First ever returning starter tad has lost to transfer. And it was a surprise. It's gotta mess with him
Losing a starter in Nique too, but, it’s pretty clear that was attrition that needed to happen.First ever returning starter tad has lost to transfer. And it was a surprise. It's gotta mess with him
I doubt he was told he was starting next year if he came backLosing a starter in Nique too, but, it’s pretty clear that was attrition that needed to happen.
