2025 Transfer Portal News & Updates

Maybe. I love the insanity and wild evolutions of the portal. It’s awesome to have players get to experience the ups and downs of participating in a market economy.
I love it. I also think that we can & will do better as some guard rails are put in place so that we get a bit more roster continuity with player development as opposed to having rosters with total free agency every semester.

We'll find a balance eventually that allows players to earn market value while allowing them freedom of movement but also emphasizes the importance of team building and player development.

The thing I'd love to see eventually is 1 free transfer as an undergraduate, 2nd undergrad transfer would require sitting for a year, and then you can be a total free agent once you have your degree.

Good luck getting the courts to agree to that without a cba.

I agree but also disagree. I think we need an End who is stout against the run to complete the package.
I see that developing for this season after another offseason of training. Being able to get upfield and disrupt things in the backfield is something you either have or you don't. We have multiple guys who have that. Playing with leverage and gap discipline against the run is more about development. (Like we've seen from Bonitto with the Broncos.)

Transfer fees are no good. The club doesn’t own the player. They should not get a commission for the player once the player moves on.
The original club invested in said player and if there are contracts, then there would be transfer buyout fees. His point was going up a level. If FCS, HBCU, G5 want to improve, then a small transfer fee would be good for everyone. It is how smaller clubs survive in soccer when they develop a kid.

They're paying for production, not to develop. They lose guys after they have produced. They have no rights to any player beyond the then-current season and no obligations to or from the player beyond that. The team signing a player under these circumstances paying a fee to the former school would basically be charity.

Multi-year NIL agreements would/will solve a lot of this.

As soon as the players get a union and can collectively bargain with lawyers who represent their interests, then I am good with whatever guardrails to which they agree. Until then, I say all gas, no brakes, no rules.

You probably forgot that you’re replying to me. I am very familiar with world football. Transfer fees are a plague on that sport too because they’re often used to create indentured servitude for players from less developed countries. Transfer fees have become the lifeblood of feeder clubs because the fees are the pittances granted by the wealthy.

Interesting thoughts on that aspect
Prime was talking about feeder teams having no benefits in the current environment. Any thoughts on that? Gift to the school more than pure transfer fees/contracts?

I am sorry Joao Felix out to be a waste of money 😘

Crazy. Again, love NHG, but if Bama signs him it's a sign of how quickly that program is returning to the pack. They would not have been spending resources on guys with limited speed a few years ago
Or we are putting out high end talent into the portal because even talented guys aren’t good enough to start here.

Or we are over playing this speed issue…. I mean, could it be he’s fast enough for the position? Maybe?

I prefer to look at it as how quickly CP has changed the program, where Alabama is grabbing players from CU. I dont think there was a player on Kardboards roster that any SEC school wanted, let alone Bama.

He is definitely not as fast as the LBs you see from Texas/OSU.

However, he has top tier instincts. Bama is very bothered by QB option runs this year, I think he is the perfect match for them.

Interesting take on the second paragraph. We struggled with slippery and fast QBs. He wasn’t very good against those teams.

End of the day, he was taken off the field on obvious passing downs. They are trying to upgrade the speed and athleticism of the position. Not sure why that’s controversial.

I thought he was phenomenal playing downhill, but struggled in space. He didn't take great angles and got caught out of position too often. If you pair him with a more athletic LB who excels in space, I think he can be a top tier college LB.
