2025 Transfer Portal News & Updates

Trevor Woods is still in the Portal, any word on if he is trying to go somewhere or may not continue playing Football?

I have not seen anything one way or the other. I am surprised that he is not playing Spring ball somewhere, unless he is injured. Not in the loop, but the door may have been open for him to play the Spring here and then transfer. He has been a good teammate that worked hard. I think he RS'd after 4 games, so approximate 10 months without the nutrition, S&C, regimen/being with the team, and just lost reps could make it a big lift from him to make a meaningful transfer impact. Also, sometimes guys burn-out, once an NFL flicker is one. If he transferred right away, I could see going into the BigSky or small FCS conference and playing.

Best wishes for him He gave the Buffs 4 good years as a teammate and providing effort.

I really think that what McChesney is doing in many cases is bringing out the development potential in kids a couple years early.

They finish high school bigger and stronger but then don't see the expected college development because they have already come close to maxxing out.
Just saw this. 6Zero is your basic churn em' and burn em' "Specialist Factory". Half the stuff they charge kids for can be pulled down from Youtube and done on your own. Most dudes going there these days are doing it for whatever "recruiting cred" and connections the org can provide. FWIW the last time I heard from somebody there, McC was rarely around.

FWIW, he is not participating in any team activities.

That is what I thought. I wish TW's well. Presuming that he has been away from football then I bet that he is hanging up the cleats. Maybe he will look to a grad degree or coaching avenue. IMO, if the NFL is not a dream and a player is not slated for meaningful FBS time, then why take another year of wear and risk something huge, especially if the player has been on concussion protocol multiple times over their career-- pee wee - college.

Although TW's did not play as much here under Prime, I do think if he retires, he goes out on top as he won the respect and admiration of his coaches and teammates. Plus, he got a degree or two, which were well earned.

Some guys still actually play for the love of the game. I knew quite a few guys in HS and college, that knew they were never going to play at the next level, but went out everyday and busted their butts on the field. When football (or any activity) is something you have done for a large portion of your young life, and have dedicated years to that discipline it is sometimes very difficult to walk away.
I wish TW the best in whatever he does, he is a true Buff!

I agree with you, the love of the game is present for many. I think in the last 10-15 years the calculus has changed somewhat, where players need to take stock of injuries and head trauma (I think many can track this in their head), such that they have full lives ahead. This was not really a thing when I graduated. Concussions and sub-concussive hits are real concerns for retired college players no matter how many years they play, as they may have impacts on future life.

Truth. My experiences were many, many years ago. Things have definitely changed with the CTE issues and the growing concern about mental health. I also believe many kids know their roll on any given team. Many know they will not make the next level, but if every kid that knew they were not going to next level didnt play, no college could field a team.

Is it just my imagination, or does the activity in the portal seem lighter than the last couple years?

It does feel lighter. In terms of numbers, I think it is about the same with 2750 players going into the portal, with 1586 signed per On3. With the Spring portal period we will probably see equal or slightly increased #'s compared to last year.

The two observations I have are:

(1) schools are snapping up players quicker, and the Fall Transfer window went faster, hence teams look pretty much done until the Spring window--so the fall window cooled quick news wise. I just think most of the football programs adjusted to scout and secure players faster. Could be tampering to a degree.

(2) less HCing changes have dampened the portal some. It is not like the Saban retirement where four schools switched coaches, as those domino's fell. Also, 2023-24, 31 new coaches--Indiana (Cig), Duke (Diaz), Bama, Boise State, a&m, Mich (Moore stayed), Wash, UCLA, Zona, Mich State, Tulane are all either P-4 or the power G-5 teams. This year 25 new HCs, but only 4 in the P-4 (all rebuilds) and UNLV/Wash St only strong G-5 teams. This year we have some rebuilds, last year some teams that were re-loads with new coaches jumping bringing tons of players with them to new destinations.

Also, the glut of Covid 6th year guys is minimized, so the 6th year Div I senior should be less and less (maybe if they have an injury year). However, now we have the JUCO ruling giving those guys more time, however I'm not sure how those guys will stick with P-4 schools.
