2025 Transfer Portal News & Updates

My guess is you won’t hear anything in the next 5 days. Might as well try and keep what we have even if for depth. We sign Tulane rb today Hayden bounces immediately
That’s fine. Hughes is better than Hayden. They need to add a legitimate starting RT while also figuring out a couple depth additions. I think Carde Smith can be the depth guy in 2025 but I’m not sure about him being the starter.

I don't think anyone is sure any more. Is it worth it to add people to your roster who you don't expect to be competing for the 2-deep that year? It used to be the norm that about a quarter of your roster fit into that category with it being half the guys in certain position groups like OL.

Does it work in this era to have a significant portion of the team being told that their job that year is to train hard, work on mastering techniques and assignments, and give a great look in practice to the guys who are playing? Can you keep those guys happy for a couple years before it's their turn when there is an opportunity to play immediately somewhere else and get paid to do it? In this environment, can you afford to sign more than about 15 preps? I don't know. Maybe it's easier to keep them from being disgruntled than it is a transfer signing who doesn't earn PT immediately.
The quality of HS recruit we need to get where we want to be isn't interested in sitting for a year, they are going to go someplace that promises them playing time.

We could do that with Seaton because he is good enough and the guys we had weren't good enough. I expect that even if he isn't starting we see Carde get a fair number of snaps.

State of the game right now but better to let high school guys go elsewhere to start then pluck them away when they either are buried behind an even higher rated recruit or they turn out to be much better than the level they were recruited to.

When you see them recruit transfers from G5 schools it is usually a guy who is much better than expected out of HS.

Until there are multi year contracts, there is absolutely no reason to sign someone who cannot help you this year.

To be clear, having "next year's" starter on the team this year helps this year's team too.

Depth players also help this year's team.

But if they're a multi year development project before they can break the two deep, the cost/ reward calculus doesn't add up.

Guys aren't going to stay where they don't play. Why sit on the bench at a P4 school when you can play at a G5 school knowing that if you develop enough to play at P4 you are out at the next Portal dates?

And as you state it makes no sense for a P4 school to risk/waste a roster spot for a guy who has no guarantees of ever helping you when you can hit the portal and find a guy who has outperformed the level he was at and likely can contribute right away.

The lack of discipline isn't a scheme issue. Whiffing on most of the transfer portal guys isn't a scheme issue.

Biggest red flag this year was the lack of improvement as the season went on.
Okay, scheme issue + coaching issue. Fair?

I think the talent this year is better than last year, except for the RT position.

Maybe Hart wil get away from the mirror long enough and attempt to recruit.

Are they better? We brought in 10 guys last year & this was the message yet the OL was marginally improved & most of those guys didn't do a damn thing.
Tyler Johnson and the kid who got poached by Oregon (Matthew Bedford starting Guard for Oregon before getting injured) at the last minute were the best OL transfers and neither ended up playing a snap for the Buffs. Mayers and Benson were both OK but not great. Things kind of went South when Benson was moved to Guard instead of Tackle and it threw off the entire OL.

I believe Gooden and Ogunbiyi are going to be better at Guard than anything we had there this year in Mayers, Benson and Brown and I think Carter Miller is better than Hank at C and probably better than Cash right now.

None of that includes Zach Owens and Yahya Attia who should both be ready to compete at Guard positions. I have no hesitations in saying the 3 IOL spots will be improved next year just with the guys we currently have on the roster and the ones coming in. Seaton is an All American caliber LT, so yeah, I think they need to figure out the RT spot and add some Tackle depth and the OL should be solid. Also, hiring the right OL coach should also do wonders, along with a more balanced offensive scheme.

Yeah, he was the first one I included. I expect them to add at least 2-3 more OL from the portal between now and during the Spring Portal (maybe more if we experience more attrition than originally thought), but Gooden, Miller and Ogunbiyi are all better additions to the OL than Mayers, Benson and Brown were last year.

I somehow missed that.

RK, Jake, Scott and Neely were also talking about Carde Smith and how everyone seems to think he's too small right now. RK said that he rode an elevator with him in San Antonio this last week and Carde towered over him (maybe not saying much as I don't know how tall RK is) and looked every bit the part of a P4 Tackle.

I think at worst, he provides the depth at RT that is needed. Of course, with Loadholdt leaving, there's always a chance of Smith asking for a release and following him to MSU as I know he loves Phil.

BTW, since it was brought up yesterday, Seaton isn't going anywhere. He didn't come to CU because of Loadholdt; he came because of Prime (and Shedeur) and they are taking care of him very well, financially.

It helps to get a variety of teaching from OL coaches and if they can hit on the new OL coach, then he will be better than ever

I'm sure Seaton also has "real" NIL opportunities that might not be available at most places.
