22-23 Transfer Portal and General Recruiting Catch-All Thread

If Shone Washington commits... Name me one position that you consider weak (as far as starters go). I get we still need some depth, but talent wise we are as strong as we have been at every position over the last twenty years. 2016 had a great defense but if our DL performance well this year, this defense will be better. The roster is chock full of high 3's 4's and 5 stars now.

If Shone Washington commits? He’s never even played! And he was a nice recruit but not elite. You’re just assuming everyone we bring in will be a good player. Many are unproven others are “proven” but are not very impressive.

D-line and O-line look bad. Those are often what separate the good teams from the bad ones. Saw an article where another PAC coach was anonymously quoted saying Prime has upgraded the talent overall but both lines are weaknesses. TE looks bad as well although that probably doesn’t matter much.

They might be, but JAG would be an improvement over what this program has had for the past few years
But does it get us where we want to be?

I’m very excited for QB, WR, and CB next year, there’s no doubt we’ll be better there. I’m just hoping the rest of the spots end up a significant upgrade as well.

Also, the staff’s evaluations worry me a bit when guys they brought in a month or two ago are already leaving or being shown the door.

I don't mind having a bit of wait-and-see, but the lines sure aren't any worse than they were, and we added a few solid d-line pieces (also I don't care what another PAC coach has to say to the media).

How do you know undoubtedly that these guys won’t end up JAGs? I’m not saying they will, and I obviously hope they don’t, but our roster seems like a huge question mark right now.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a bit hesitant until we actually see these guys on the field.
I don’t see how there is any way our roster couldn’t have been a question mark this year. We HAD to make massive systematic changes, and Prime went BIG to do so, turning over 60(?). No one has ever tried this before. And it was never possible until very recently.

When you are the very worst…. As they say…. Nowhere to go…

I am not hesitant at all. Everything we get this year is a bonus. Few expectations outside the team themselves. That’s a great place to start.

Again, nobody is suggesting we are going to be at an elite level at any position, especially the lines, or be a playoff contender in 2023. The point is that this is an entire roster rebuild from scratch. Are you seriously going to say you’d take last years roster, OL/DL included, over what we have now?

Does this roster get us to 6 wins in 2023? Quite possibly. I think the penciled in starters at most positions are good enough for it, but we’ll see on the rotational guys.

As far as the staff evaluations, I think there is more to it than them just missing on the evaluation. I think certain guys came here in December with the idea that they would be starters because CU was so bad last year but when they saw what else was brought in and what the staff was doing to keep cleaning house, they decided they had better chances at playing elsewhere.

I very much want to see what this staff can do with recruiting if they can get to 6 wins and go bowling.

I wouldn’t say weak, but there are a lot of unproven commodities coming into the team. On paper these players should be an improvement over what we lost, but a lot of them are coming off injuries or were not in line to start on their previous teams.

Some of the sunshine pumpers here are acting like it’s ridiculous to wonder if a lot of these new additions will pan out, and I don’t think it is. Again, I hope they’re studs next year, but for a lot of these guys we don’t know thats necessarily the case.
And last year's roster had sooooooo many proven commodities.

Huh? We’ve got some good players in the portal. But we’ve also got lots of mediocre players or players with potential but who are unproven. How does that equate to “basically no weak spots?” This is the bigbang logic of simply having players on your roster equals no holes.
Offense right now of:

QB: Sanders, Staub
RB: Smoke, Hankerson, Edwards
WR: Weaver, Horton, Miller
WR: Hunter, Ellis, Hopkins
SL: Horn, Dawson, Gaines, Mathis
TE: Passarello, Fauria, Olsen
LT: Tank, Jatta
LG: Brown, Bebee
C: Wells, Bailey or Bebee
RG: Wilty or Bailey
RT: Washington, Jatta

Defense of:

DE: Domineck, Harris
DT: Cokes, McNeill
DT: Payne, Thomas, Wallace
DE: McClendon, Smalls
LB: Kennedy, Ham
LB: Bentley, Hurtado
LB: Brown, Gant
CB: Hunter, McClain
CB: Robinson, Cooper
N: Breedlove
S: Slusher or Silmon-Craig, Ward
S: Tisdale or Woods, Gant

K: Mata
P: Vassett

In what universe is that a bad defensive line? UT and FSU fans are not happy about losing McNeill and Thomas. UGA fans have good things to say about Washington if he comes here. Let's also mention these unproven guys have better pedigree and practiced against far better dudes in practice than what we had last year.

IDK about you, but I don't necessarily see anything anyone would consider a "weak" spot. One wuck look can te you that roster blows away our 2022 depth chart, though.

We need to improve at WR and O line the most IMO. Get s couple guys who've produced a bit more at receiver, and hopefully land McCaskill as well.

Keep in mind, we have 15 more spots and are still in on a bunch of good players, plus you never know if a freshman might flash.

The next time you hit on a player evaluation will be the first.

And yes, last year had a lot of proven commodities. They were proven to be terrible. My point is, we assume we’ve made upgrades across the board, but we really don’t have any way to back that up. It’s just speculation and blind hope until these guys hit the field.

I would say that even if we're getting some guys who might not be starters, you still want to guys who fit the culture you're trying to build, and fit a profile (aka SPEEEEEED).

I will also say that I heard from someone in the program today that the guys from the previous coach were extremely toxic. Shocker, I know. They were entitled, treated the support staff very poorly, arrogant despite their record, and clearly not bought into what Coach Prime is doing.

This same person said the new vibe and culture around Dal Ward is completely different. The athletes are very kind, very driven and work really hard.

Even if Jaylen Ellis gives you the exact same production as Ty Robinson, then Coach Prime is still good making that change if he thinks Jaylen Ellis contributes to how he wants this team to be built.

In one of the well off videos coach prime wanted the # for the manager of a hotel they stayed at, to try to smooth things over because of bad behavior and assure them it wouldn't happen under his watch.

EJ Horton and Willie Gaines may only have 20 catches or whatever, but sure as **** the YPC was higher lol

We fast as **** boi

I'm still very fond of all the roster doubter posters here and elsewhere.

Never fill those 85.
Too much "talent" lost.
Will we stay with 72 scholly's?
But, but Sami and Tyson....

Pffffft.

We are to a man better than last year. Take the roster last season, line them up directly across from this season. The talent now EASILY is better than last.

The problem on AllBuffs is that if you express any skepticism or even (as you're doing) cautious optimism, the immediate response is "oh, you'd rather have last year's roster?" How ****ing stupid is that? Of course the current roster is better that last year basically top to bottom on paper. We all know that. But some of the justifiable skepticism is that CP made it seem with statements like "we coming" and "I'm bringing Louis" that we'd see this wave of established guys from P5 programs with proven records just clammoring to play for Prime Time. Outside of maybe 5-6 guys, that's not what we're seeing. The actual incoming recruits/transfers aren't matching that hype. We're getting guys from Marshall, Southern Utah, Old Dominion, Maine, Kent State, Jackson State, juco players ... yes, good players but vs sub P5 competition. And almost all the guys coming from P5 programs have some kind of question mark about them. It's hard to get super excited about that. And just because a guy was recruited to a P5 school doesn't make him legit either. They miss on guys too, a lot. Both lines are yes, of course better than last year(!) but hardly can be viewed as massive strengths. Admittedly, the FSU DT is promising.

All of that said, this purge had to happen. Shedeur alone will make a HUGE difference. And this is the beginning ... hopefully Year 1 results in 4-6 wins and competitive losses and then recruiting almost guaranteed picks up even more.

Every defensive lineman we have on the roster now is better than our best defensive lineman last season.

And no, there aren't tons of "questions" about the P5 transfers we're getting. Nearly every one of them would have been at least in the two deep at their previous school.

Skepticism has its place but ….

Seriously, the QB and coaching changes alone make this program a totally different animal.

We have what appear to be outstanding coaches. We haven’t seen that in a while. Utter incompetence paired with inferior talent and entitlement are what we’ve had …. And people want to pick nits. Pick deeez nits.

We’ve gotten more 4* and 5* recruits (transfers and prep) in 6 months than in the past 20 years. Think about that and go ahead and find something to complain about.

8-4
