Bowl Games (other than ours) and associated silliness 2024 Plus the Playoffs

Indiana was for sure overrated. When they played the two actually good teams they got blown out and were never competitive. Cignetti coached like an asshole in both games, with the sole intent on not getting embarrassed any further. I understood that against Ohio State; they needed the appearance that they were competitive, but last night was cowardly.

They were 11-1 and I don't fault them for their soft schedule as Michigan and Nebraska were two teams on their schedule who failed to live up to their preseason expectations and then they also had Ohio State. BUT, they were not are good as the traditional 11-1 record in a power conference would suggest.

This is the crux of the issue, IMO. With the new conferences, fans, media and the committee are going to have to adjust how we think about W/L records. 11 wins has always meant you're a top 3-5 team in the country with almost zero debate. This new environment has made it so 11 wins might mean you're a top 3-5 team in the country... or that you're a top 12-15 team in the country.
64-team league, 14-game regular season. 8 divisions. Play everybody in your division and one team from each of the other divisions. Problem solved.

Also do aimilar to how the NFL does it so you also play the teams that finished about where you did. Better for ratings and to give a Cinderella story opportunity. So, if you finish top 4 in your division then the next year all your non-division games would be against top 4 finishers. Finish bottom 4, you play bottom 4.

If you look at it from a different POV, because the crescendo of whining from south of the Mason-Dixon has been glorious.
I just love all the chatter coming from the CFB media (many of whom work for entities that show either superconferences) trying to defend the league they cover during the season.

Like shut the hell up all of you and admit ESPN and FOX have totally ruined this sport with these bloated conferences.

Here's where this is headed, I'm afraid - everyone is coming to the same realization that these conference are unwieldy and are offering up bull**** results, like Indiana and SMU not playing most of the top teams in their respective conferences.

The solution that will be offered will be - go back to divisions, and ensure the teams in each division play everyone in their division, but the tradeoff will be to shrink the pool and elbow out the smaller conferences, so CCGs and uneven divisions don't penalize teams.

We can start by kicking the Group of 6 out of the playoff then. I don't need to see Potato State in here. **** that team and their fans.

I see your point and I largely agree that a playoff system is an unfair way to determine a "true champion" as, as you say, it's all about getting there and once you are there everyone starts at zero and it's essentially all about how you perform in a 5-6 week window, especially in a single elimination format. I think it should be a marathon and not sprint (and that's part of the reason why I value league titles in soccer highly as I think the league is the bread and butter and the best teams proves itself from August to May and not just at the end of the season) but I also realise that there presumably will never be a truly fair to determine a national champion in college (or even the NFL) as it'd take at least 20+ games plus the US audience is too conditioned for a playoff format also because it creates more drama and revenue than a league format.
Great post.

I do think, correct me if I am wrong over here on the other side of the ocean, that part of the reason that European soccer fans are as intense as they are is that all season long the majority of the games are meaningful, be it to move closer to the top of league standings or avoid relegation.

I will admit that the NCAA basketball tournament is one of the better events of the year. It also though rarely results in a title for the team that was best for the majority of the regular season. Even more it renders much of the regular season meaningless other that deciding if one school will be a 4 seed and the other a 5 seed. There are college games on today involving teams that in March will be in the tournament but few people care.

The old way of determining a college football champion had it's flaws but in general usually worked out pretty close and when it didn't the discussion kept the interest level very high. It was amazing how often the NY6 bowl results made the answer very clear.

With a 2 or 4 team playoff you could always argue, just as they are with a 12 team format, that the last team out was better than the last team in but it was hard to argue that the team that most deserved to be there didn't get a shot at winning it on the field against a worthy opponent.

I wish that I enjoyed watching soccer because there are a number of things they do that are really the right way to do them.

I mean, yes, but UGa and Tennessee going out fast would be better, because it's the OG SEC fans throwing the biggest fits.
I know what you mean (and don't disagree) but I loathe Texas and their self-entitled fans as much or more than any other team outside of Nubb and tOSU. Texass definitely joined the most self-entitled conference, so it's a good fit.

I'm torn re the last game tonight ... I want to root for the Vols, despite their conference affiliation, and despite the fact that if they beat the Suckeyes it will probably spell curtains for Ryan Day, who I would like to still see as their coach for next year's Michigan game. ;)
