Bowl Games (other than ours) and associated silliness 2024 Plus the Playoffs

I also like that there is no mythical national champion. Any team (other than Oregon) who wins this is deserving. Doesn’t mean the best team always wins, but the winner will definitely be deserving after making that run.

Another reason why I like the idea of getting rid of the bye. And maybe get rid of the conference championships.

When did the referee signal the ball ready for play? I’m not sure how the actions of the long snapper matter.
sorry for late reply. Here is what I read about it (don't claim to be a rules expert) in the the AJC as explained by an SEC referee:

"That play (executed by Notre Dame) is legal, first and foremost because, the fourth-down play, the ball was made ready for play after an official’s timeout,” he said.

Also, if Notre Dame’s long snapper had put his hands on the ball and established himself as the snapper, he could not have gone off the field except for a stoppage of play.

However, “if you go back and look at the play, the snapper for the punt team comes out and just stands over the ball, never puts his hands on the ball,” McDaid said. “So they’re allowed to substitute all 11.”"

Get rid of the bye. Top four ranked conference champions get an autobid. Seed like the rankings. Basically, make it like the basketball tournament with fewer rounds and fewer automatic qualifiers.

Yeah, make it 16 teams and give two of the spots to the highest ranked teams from the non-P4 conferences. No, they’re not going to have 2 of the best 16 teams in the country most years, but it would be good for the sport. It keeps fans of those conferences interested and maybe once a decade we’ll get a Cinderella to root for in the second round. Depending on what you count as a lesser conference in basketball, the NCAA gives auto bids to about 23 lesser conferences and it’s fantastic for March Madness. Rooting for a Pac-12, MAC, MWC (NOT Boise State) or AAC underdog has much more appeal to me than watching Ohio State stomp on the 6th place SEC team.

I post things that have been discussed here before when I feel like someone ties it up with a neat, tidy bow on it. I especially like knowing topics we vehemently agree with (whether it be sports, politics, or whatever) are getting a bull horn on social media as well.
Wasn’t a knock on you posting it. I’ve gone back and forth with Trogdor about how NIL and portal have created more parity in college than ever before. Sure, top programs remain great but the depth on those teams, especially in the trenches, are a lot worse now leading to their margin of error being smaller than before.

Obvious observation over the past 2 years is all teams (maybe a few exceptions) are using the transfer portal. All rosters are more fluid. Agree, it will bring parity not just between conferences but also intra-conference competition may increase too. The Blue-Bloods will be the Blue-Bloods, however they still go through ups and downs/transition periods (Fla St, USC, Mich to a degree), so I envision more Indianas, SMUs, and Arizona Sts coming out of nowhere during a certain special season.

The Bahamas Bowl is the most pitiful thing I've ever seen. High school stadium, terrible field conditions, maybe 500 people there, and ESPN is calling the game from Bristol instead of having sent someone there.
If I was an announcer for ESPN, that would have been a bowl game I'd have been lobbying hard to do on-site. Assuming ESPN owns it as it does most bowl games these days, kind of pathetic not to lean into it to at least a minimum level.

Talking to my guy at one of those schools, the atmosphere and logistics around it in the lead up was piss poor. From what it sounds like, it may not be around much longer.

I would prefer keeping the playoff at 12 but doing 4 team play ins from the P4.

Top 2 from each conference get in, winner gets a higher seed.

Leaves 3 at large and 1 G6 (if they must be included)

This would resolve most of the mega conference issues where some of the top teams didn’t play each other at all

I failed when this was posted.

It needed the tag line "$EC. It just mean$ more."

A common theme on r/CFB that I'm noticing is Georgia or Alabama fans disavowing the "SEC! SEC!" chant and blaming fans of teams that never compete for SEC titles of doing it as a way to try to ride the coattails of better programs. Needless to say, fans of those other SEC teams are not pleased. 🤣

Thank you. Really cool play. Practiced, clearly. Great call in the moment. Freeman is good.

I like this. I’d just add play first round and quarters on campuses.

And hold an 4- or 8-team G6 playoff.

What does 4 team play in grim P4 mean? Not sure I completely get that part.

The NCAA tournament comparison doesn't work IMO. Go back to Purdue's loss as a 1 seed year before last-they shot 35% from the field, 19% from 3 (woof), and less than 80% from the line. Those variables in basketball happening on a day allow for upsets like 15s over 2s and 16s over 1s here and there.

They'll never happen in football, and here's why-Allar could have thrown 3 picks on Tuesday and Penn State could have still whipped Potato State running the ball like they did.

Top 4 teams from each P4 have their own 4 team “playoff” to determine the champion and second place team. 1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3, winners play.

The final 4 are Texas, Ohio state, ND and PSU. I’ll need move evidence before I agree that this is anything other than the normal cyclical nature of cfb.
