Bowl Games Thread

You missed the point. You keep saying, "If I was his teammate, this is how I would feel", but have you actually tried looking at the situation from his POV? Say to yourself, "I am in line to make millions in the next year, provided I stay healthy"... and you would still risk injury in the name of.... brotherhood? Really?

OK. From his POV:

1. I don't know that I'm not actually hurting my draft stock by not playing. It is an opportunity to have a big game.
2. I am invincible, man. I'm friggin' Superman. I don't play scared. And, hell, more guys get hurt in training than in games anyway. Not like I'm not gonna train until I've inked a contract.
3. I've fought, suffered and celebrated with this team for 3 years. These are my brothers. I'm gonna be there for them and with them.

He's not close to the most recognizable name in the draft unless you live in a Colorado bubble.

And I thought it was interesting that one of the sites (CBS, I think) that published a mock draft and had him going soonest was banking that on him leaving a big final impression against a poor North Carolina run defense. It's very questionable whether this is even a good decision for his draft position. So if that's not even a lock solid reason to skip the game, then it's just a guy who has moved on mentally from his team and we can justifiably question where his head was at during the season.
I find that extremely hard to believe, and if it was said, that person doesn't have a clue. The kid broke Barry ****ing Sanders' record last year, was a Heisman runner-up, and laps the field in touches over the last 2 years. You really believe that what he would have done against a **** North Carolina defense was going to make or break his draft status? Come on, nik, you know you don't believe a word you just typed.

Not make or break. Did I say that? But last impressions do matter.

Spare me your I'm just in it for the money BS then.

And yes college football doesn't exist without the fans, you think that colleges would have football programs if they didn't have fans putting up the money, and that goes for every D1 program in existence.

He absolutely owes it to his teammates. They busted ass for him so he could look good. Yes he is highly talented and brought huge amounts of positive publicity to the school. Had he been a relative bust though he would have still gotten the scholly, that's how the system works.

Pro teams make lots of money off their players as well. They also have some who get overpaid.

He agreed to e a part of this years team, healthy he owes it to his teammates and his coaches to be there. To a lot of them this game isn't meaningless, it is one of the highlights of their college career.

The attitude that it is meaningless is exactly why I would hesitate to want him on my pro team. If he is in the last year of his rookie contract and relatively underpaid does he just shut it down for the last part of the season to make sure he is healthy for his next contract. Those games aren't meaningless to the fans who bought the tickets expecting to see him play and give effort.

He may have a right to do so but to me it screams selfish.

Had he taken the entire year to train it would have been very different. He wouldn't have given his teammates expectations that they could count on him, that he would have their backs like they had his.
Mtn... your analogies are not doing any favors in supporting your argument.

If that's true (and of course it is), I would say say McCaffrey left a pretty good impression with his performance against Rice at season's end.

Your argument other than "Screw my team and all who have supported me and made it possible for me to become famous and a highly ranked prospect because I'm me and I'm more important." doesn't make sense.

Again if he wants it to be all about him, be a boxer, run track, swim, play tennis, do an individual sport. Play a team sport be a teammate all the way through.

He has every right to do this it just reeks of a fat ego and greed. None of your arguments are going to change that.

I agree. But then he followed it up with, "chose not to play because he was more worried about his contract than his team" as a final chapter to his college career.

This just in... Bowl games dont matter. Some of you might not want to hear that, but the games themselves do not matter unless you're in a position like CU where you want to celebrate for once, and build for the next year, which is why I would prefer to ser a lot of Montez in San Antonio.

Call it quitting if you want Duff, the issue is you seem personally offended. You dont think he talked to his teammated about this? They support him.

Brotherhood? The fight? This isnt war. It's a damn game. I never felt like my teammates owed me a damn thing. If I did, wouldnt that make me selfish?

Reeks of smart business.

Thats all this reeks of. Intelligent decision making, which I hope other players follow in the future.

This is going to be one of those classic allbuffs arguments where we talk around each other in circles until somebody just gives up.

It's a crappy thing for McCaffery to do. It sets a horrible precedent. It's his right to do it, but that doesn't make it right.

Wow. Never felt like your teammates owed you a damn thing? I would have hated to have you as a teammate, @Medford M. Supposed to have each others' backs and be there for each other.

I guess I'm getting old, because I still believe in playing for the name on the front of the jersey instead of the back.

I'm not offended in the slightest. I just wonder what you would call it other than quitting.

So how about an intelligent decision not to play against an opponent in season who might make you look bad, smart business. How about not playing unless the game is nationally televised, smart business.

Simple question does a guy put his team ahead of his own interest and desires or is he a team guy. Says a lot about who somebody is.

I am willing to bet that skipping the Sun Bowl will not figure in the slightest in his draft analyses. There are probably some GMs who are actually moving him up their boards after seeing how smart he is.

No, you would have loved me as a teammate because I would have made the team better and done what I had to to win the game.

It's still a sh!tty thing to do.

I support whatever decision these kids make. It's their future, their career, and their money, not yours. If he decided to play in the game, I'd be happy because I'd get to watch him again. I simply understand him making a smart decision that he has undoubtedly spoken with multiple advisors about.

When you felt like it was in your best interest to show up or try hard. Thanks, but no thanks. Addition by subtraction to get guys like that out of the locker room no matter their talent.

Sorry, but on the last part, no NFL team is looking at this and saying bad things about the kid. His teammates will tell you hes a good teammate and one meaningless game isnt worth risking derailing his career. This isnt the old days where you go out there injured as hell to show how TOUGH you are and what a WARRIOR you are.

Not being a smart ass, but has anyone argued that it's not called quitting? He is absolutely quitting, but I don't believe this quitting to be a bad thing in the slightest. Joe Williams is the one who literally quit on his teammates and only came back when 3 of them got injured. He was nationally praised for "coming out of retirement".

Are we really that surprised when a college player gets the opportunity to make a college football business decision, he does?
