Bubble Watch - Saturday 3/12

Looks like the Lunardi bracket that has CU in 'last 4 in' and playing in Dayton has the WCC as a 2 bid conference with both Gonzaga and Saint Mary's in.

Does st Marys get an at large bid

They should be safe, but it's conceivable they could be surprisingly left out. It probably would have been better for St. Mary's to win and the Zags to lose, but it really doesn't matter. They both were probably gonna get in regardless. Tonight worked out well for the Buffs - we dodged a bullet with ODU holding off VCU

If you want two tiny-conference programs potentially capable of pulling upsets in the dance, check out Belmont and Wofford. Belmont won 30 games and has a rotation where they play a ton of guys and no one plays more than 25 minutes. They're 30-4 and lost close ones to Tennessee and Vandy. Wofford beat a very good College of Charleston team coached by Bobby Cremins tonight to win the SoCon. They were in the dance last year and played Wisconsin tough. They'll be a 13 or 14 and if they get a team from the Big10 or Big East, they are capable of competing as they match-up very nicely. Old Dominion beating someone wouldn't be much of a shock since they're projected as an 8 seed, but for a team from the Colonial Athletic Conference they have a ridiculous amount of size and physicality. Someone said they're a "mid-major version of Pitt" and they're exactly right. That could be a nasty matchup for a top team in the second round.

Looking at tomorrow's games, the Big East tournament gets started. One game is very important -- Marquette/Providence. They're the only one of the projected 11 Big East teams in the dance that are on the bubble. At 18-13 (9-9), a loss would put their bid in jeopardy. Providence is only 15-16 but they're capable of pulling the upset as they may have the best player in the Big East in Marshawn Brooks (25ppg, scored 52 against ND).

Unfortunately they probably will, but I'd argue they don't deserve one....they've lost 4 of their last 6, their SOS is in the hundreds (yes, far worse than the Buffs), and they didn't win probably the worst WCC conference in the past 5-10 years

SI guy agrees, course he also put VCU in over the Buffs this morning which is definitely not going to happen:

I watched the St Mary's Gonzaga game last night. And it is funny because St mary's looks like Gonzaga did about 5 years ago. 3-4 white guys, with disheveled hair that play some pretty good basketball. I wasn't particularly impressed with either team. Dellavedova from St Mary's took more bad shots than I have seen since RP was coach for us.

My friend, there are a lot of bad autobid champs taking better team's spots. Does anybody here seriously believe Tad's previous team - UNoColo - is a better basketball team than his current - CU?

I also wonder... what if CU was a member of the PAC this year, sted next?

And yeah, buffnik, I'm pointing a finger at YOU:lol:: anyone who believes the eventual NIT champ is the 65th-best team in the country needs to turn off his computer and go outside for a walk.

Haha. I know it means you're around 40th best. But officially, you're #69 if you win that thing.

so does a Villanova loss to USF move them to the bubble? USF 1 pt lead w/ under 15 sec

edit: now tied w/ 11.5 remaining and one shot for nova from the line

Nova 5-10 in their last 15, including 5 straight losses. They had a 16 point lead at halftime.

...but they're still gonna get in.

Losing 7 of final 9 games including against some horrid teams....Nova has to be done...no way they deserve a bid

They just have too many quality wins to leave them out unfortunately. UCLA, Temple, Cincinnati, Louisville, Syracuse, Marquette, West Virginia

during the halftime of the north texas/arkansas little rock game the analyst gave the buffs a pass on every stat they presented. he said we win games and beat good teams, one of them being baylor.

I saw that, whoever that guy is, I'm a fan. He gave the Buffs a "pass" and basically said something along the lines of "CU deserves to be in since they've proven they can beat top teams. Ask Texas, KState or Baylor [sic]"

Northern Colorado is playing Northern Arizona in the Big Sky semifinals. Game is on Altitude. Believe the winner will be playing Montana

if it happens, it will put the oft-repeated "last ten games" stat you hear post-selection mentioned a lot in a newish context....which seems to have a rhetorical plasticity that runs counter to "your whole body of work". seems like the committee can appeal to one, and ignore the other when it suits them. not exactly air-tight argumentation...

a little uncomfortable that Missouri appears to be "a lock" everywhere you read but we're (also at 8-8, split the series)...gonna need to win twice (at least) this week.

I wonder how much of a "lock" Missouri would be if they lost today........

because?? they're in the big east. freaking shame.

No it's not a shame, Nova will get in because they have a full body of work that is deserving of being at at-large team. The Big East is far and away the best conference in the nation this year whether or not you like it.
