Buffs Defense May Become The Unsung Hero

I don’t know if it shows up in the stats, but my sense is that the defense is getting better every week, after adjusting for Travis being in or out of the lineup. It has been a fun season so far, and CU can really make things interesting as long as they keep taking care of business.

Can we all say a big THANK YOU to Trevor Woods for redshirting this year? Otherwise, we might not have been witness to the BRILLIANCE that has been NHG!!!

8 games in. I'm thinking we see a lot of drops because Cinci's run game tore us up some. Their OC did good work scheming guys open against our man coverage on their TD drives (or we just, umm, forgot how to substitute).

Links: NCAA. BCF. Team Rankings.

PPG: 26th - drop (19.7 4 ppg). 2023 # FYI: 32.8 ppg.
PPP: 37th - drops a bit.
PPD: 32 - no change.

YPG: 65th - small improvement
YPP: 5.44 - worse
Yards Per Rush (new): 4.2, 59th or so. (per game, 77th) - no big change here.

Efficiency Stuff:
Overall Defense (FEI): 38th - no change.
Overall Defense (SP+): 53d - small improvement.
Team Passing Defensive Efficiency: 77 - small bump

Sacks: 23 - decent drop.
TFL: 30th (6.6 per game). a drop

Red Zone D: 13th - small drop
Turnovers Gained: 36th - big drop
3d Down D: 33d - small improvement

Overall mixed results. Didn't get the turnovers or havoc plays this week but were good enough that our efficiency numbers didn't really get worse and actually improved a bit outside of yards per rush and play. Doing well on 3d down when we had them in passing situations was huge.

9 games in. We did good in some areas, but that 4th quarter debacle resulted in a lot of yards, so I expect our efficiency #s to drop.

Links: NCAA. BCF. Team Rankings.

PPG: 30th - another small drop. 20.6 ppg.
PPP: 22th- big gain here somehow
PPD: 36th - small drop

YPG: 68th - small drop
YPP: 5.3 - improvement to 62
YPRush: 3.9 - improved. up to 41st. Trend is good too, only 3.5 last three games.

Efficiency Stuff:
Overall Defense (FEI): 28th - Big bump, which makes no sense! Despite our struggles, all that stuffing of TT plus the TOs helped. FYI, FEI hates the TT offense (75th!)
Overall Defense (SP+): 53d - no change. Weird
Team Passing Defensive Efficiency: 64th - decent bump here
Stop Rate (new): 16th

Sacks:

TFL: 15th (big jump). 7.1 pg
Red Zone D: 11th - jump. another big red zone stuff helps. teams score 70.6% of the time in the red zone against us.
Turnovers Gained: 29th - small gain
3d Down D: 38th - small drop

Most of the efficiency numbers didn't take a big hit (not sure what's up with the FEI rating, might be me ****ing up last week). The havoc stuff is all good. Our sack rate is not up there, but I looked it up and we are sacking QBs on nearly 10% of their drop backs, which is 8th right behind OSU. Pretty crazy how that part of the defense has improved as the season went on.

This team is rounding away from mediocre overall on defense in a big way. It's still giving up a lot of yards, especially in the run game, and doesn't have great passing efficiency numbers, but it's getting TO's and red zone stops. Teams get a lot of junk yards against us. We are definitely boom or bust, and that's fun! sometimes.

I love that we’re playing an aggressive defense and moving away from Bend Don’t Break. Altitude is a gift that should be paired with a super aggressive defense. Force the opponent’s gassed defense back onto the field as soon as possible.
Every defensive coach who is any good wants to play "aggressive defense." It's one thing to talk about it, you can even scheme it and practice it.

It doesn't work unless you have athletes who can beat their blocker one on one. This same defensive scheme, with these same defensive coaches, in the years prior to last year and for the most part this year would have been a disaster because our guys with their defensive limitations, would have simply been setting themselves up to be embarassed.

Now we have athletes across the defense who are good enough to win their battles, that is what sets up sacks, TFLs, tackles short of the first down on 3rd downs, stops on 4 down attempts, etc. We also have athletes good enough to make a play when it is not in their gap, when a teammate is out of position, when a teammate does get beaten on his one on one.

Then you add coaches like Warren Sapp who can teach an athletic DL how to use their advantage.

We could have had these coaches 3-4 years ago and it wouldn't work. All the coaching in the world doesn't change things when the players are smaller, slower, weaker, and lack quickness. When a player is just trying to survive against a better opponent he doesn't have it in him to cover for his teammate.

Our LBs can make plays because they know the DL is going to do it's job, the DL can make plays because they know the LBs are going to do their job, the DBs can be aggressive because they know the DL is going to get pressure and the LBs have the guys in the short zones.

Coaching matters but only when they have the talent that is good enough to make the coahcing matter.

That is our defense this year.
