CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

Even when it's on, it's not as available as streaming gets you. When other programming runs long, their other contractual obligations kick in to complete the broadcast. Truck race not finished on FS1? Don't worry, we're airing your game on FS2 until that's over. Oh, you don't pay up for a package with FS2? Well, you can fvck right off. Same thing with ESPN and things getting pushed to ESPNU, ESPNN or The Ocho.

I'd rather have the flexibility to get what I want to watch and know that I'm actually going to be able to watch it in its entirety. I love streaming.
Streaming is great right now for fans of the teams that are playing, but it's not quite there for casual viewership of the masses.

I'll acknowledge those channels but not that viewership could be lower than those on Amazon and especially Apple.
If on Apple, there will most likely be a subscription cost on-top of the basic Apple monthly charge. Unless a fan of one of the PAC schools, I don't see
many people purchasing ANOTHER subscription.

Why do we care about casual viewership? As long as the media dollars are there for Pac-12 members, casual viewing is only relevant for the media company and its ad rates. I don't see how it has any impact on CU or we fans.

but, but, but they're still on their "old" agreement. Next year will be different. You'll see....

Because of viewership, ratings and national brand building? What have we even been talking about the past 474 pages if you don't care about any of that, which does rely on people actually watching the games?

While this is funny, I live here. They are actually hyped about the team now. They just hated being in the American. Most consider it minor league football.

I think yall underestimate how much people hate being G5s, especially those who at one time was P5. Even Rice alums would come out of the woodworks if they were P5 again.

They do have a home game vs UT driving a chunk of that plus a home date Vs TCU.

Out of all those games, is there a single game on ESPN+ that should be somewhere else? ESPN+ was created for games like Tarleton State vs Texas Tech. ESPN+ is way better than the Pac network that CU was constantly stuck playing on.

Because of viewership, ratings and national brand building? What have we even been talking about the past 474 pages if you don't care about any of that, which does rely on people actually watching the games?
People watch if you are ranked or otherwise more interesting than other games. Having your game listed in the channel guide does nothing to build the brand. B1G hasn't achieved what it has due to BTN being on basic in most cable & satellite packages. It's because of FoxSports marketing the hell out of it to get an ROI and then paying up for rights to keep that gravy train rolling. Whoever commits to the Pac-12, if we aren't its 3rd or worse priority in college sports programming, will market the hell out of the conference and make sure it gets a ton of exposure.

People watch if you are ranked or otherwise more interesting than other games.... AND they have access to your games. The whole point of streaming vs linear is the idea that fewer people are going to be able to watch games on Apple or Amazon vs if they are on FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC or ESPN. You think the Washington vs Michigan State game on Peacock is going to have as big of ratings as if it were on ABC? You think the NFL playoff game in January is going to have the same ratings on Peacock as it would have had on NBC or CBS? What are we talking about here?

wihile i am at it, i suggest that the "anti streamers" in this thread are fighting the last war not the next one. that war is over. the traditional networks already have lost their dominant big 4 monopoly position. they are now competing for content in a vastly different marketplace. the b12 took a smaller deal and took it early to be safe as this all evolves. it was a cautious move and it did block the pac from being able to do a similar safe, low dollar deal.

i suspect what is happening now in these negotiations is that it isl all about apportionment of risk among the various players in the deal. guarantees v. upside v. what content to be on, etc.

the Pac may (or perhaps likely will) be taking more risk and less guaranteed money than the big12 but you have to weigh the upside too.

RG has created a no-lose situation for CU. if we are comfortable with the pac deal, then we stay, and i f we are not, we have the open arms of the also available b12 to save us.

sure, there is some chance that there is NO pac deal that gets done, but it is very far fetched. the remaining 10 and/or their additions have intrinsic value and teams coming or leaving impact the value but some deal is almost certainly going to get done.

the spin from the b12 apologists is going to be focused on guarantees. i am far more interested in upside. now is the time to roll the dice for a contract period that isn't too long so that we can adjust to market conditions in the next round

luddites screaming at the universe that they don't want their teams to be on a streaming service have already lost. that's not the world we live in.

but, but, but they're still on their "old" agreement. Next year will be different. You'll see....

If youre ESPN and youre trying to move more people on to your streaming service because your other revenue stream is dying it would make sense to start putting both more stuff AND must see stuff on your streaming service.

I agree there is a lot of body bag games on there. We only have like the 1st 3 weeks released now anyways.

In the future ABC/ESPN will pimp the SEC games into the best times because they lost B1G content. I dont see much of the future BigXII content seriously challenging for the ABC broadcast or ESPN main premium time slots. Some of the SECs lesser content could be on ESPN2, SEC Network- a split audience.

Fox/FS1 is now being forced to share more B1G content with NBC and CBS. Since the B1G doesnt play at night, and with Fox having lower BigXII rights then ESPN, I suspect this is where most BigXII games will land at night.

The Big 12 always has almost all those ESPN+ games in the first 3-4 weeks. Then next to nothing after. Extremely front loaded as the buy games are the bulk of these and they are typically early September games.

This article dives into the exposure angle and addresses this specifically.

Here's the games on streaming, networks with less than 20M subscribers, or regional outlets segmented by early & late season for last year.
0057756-xyie.jpg

The Big 12 will likely end up around 30% in the new deal given just under 2 games per school make it to ESPN+ per year. 2023 is a crapshoot because with 4 more teams than the contract was signed for paired with no real idea how the pro-rata increases will impact inventory... it's an interesting mess to unroll. Do most go to ESPN? FOX? How many is the minimum? Unknown for this year.

For the new deal FOX has 26 games while ESPN has 52+ the title game. They won't pay double FOX's amount to broadcast fewer games. Especially when FOX has most of the hoops as well. 26 would be roughly 33%.

One thing that hasn't been addressed in this thread (forgive me if I missed it somewhere in the previous 500 pages) is that casual viewers of games on ABC, FOX, ESPN, etc. have a tendancy to flip channels during commercials. I do it. You do it. We all ****ing do it.

However, that does't happen as often on a streaming service because it is a slower process to reconnect to your broadcast, especially if you're moving across different streaming services. I don't have any detail behind this, but from an economics perspective I'd think that ad-supported broadcasts on streaming would bring in more revenue on a per/viewer basis than traditional non-streaming services simply because your viewers are more captured. Said another way, they can probably demand more money per viewer than many non-streaming services, likely to pass a portion of that on to the conferences.

That doesn't mean someone won't go grab a beer, take a leak, or move to their phone during a commercial, but at least the commercials aren't being completely ignored.

People watch if you are ranked or otherwise more interesting than other games.... AND they have access to your games. The whole point of streaming vs linear is the idea that fewer people are going to be able to watch games on Apple or Amazon vs if they are on FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC or ESPN. You think the NFL playoff game in January is going to have the same ratings on Peacock as it would have had on NBC or CBS? What are we talking about here?
People who buy to see games just like season ticket holders. Versus the freeloaders watching on live Tv or over the fence. The question is which one does Mr University get more cash from.

A few things...
1. This is 62%, so not quite 70%, but it's close for the first month
2. This includes Texas and OU
3. The new media deal doesn't start until 2025
4. Because of all these factors, this post should be deleted

Yep, notable brands don’t get buried. Just doesn’t happen. And we’re a notable brand now. CU will be promoted, seen and paid.

I’ll add that we have to make peace w/ not being ESPN or Fox’s top 2 priorities. When you look at if from that perspective, the media deal needs to be creative in order to get FMV, appropriate exposure, etc.

People get hung up on it’s either Fox, ESPN or that’s it. Well, if you’re not their 1st or 2nd favorite what are you getting out of that? Not a whole lot and that’s not going to work for the P12.

Fox/FS1 is now being forced to share more B1G content with NBC and CBS. Since the B1G doesnt play at night, and with Fox having lower BigXII rights then ESPN, I suspect this is where most BigXII games will land at night.
Except they need inventory to really push them off those windows. They'll swap out a few windows but there will still be plenty- especially with the Big 12 more willing to go Thurs/Friday than before.

SEC for Big Ten and BYU no longer independent causes a loss of around 10 games in national broadcast inventory for ABC/ESPN. The SEC will get a few more ABC/ESPN games in the swap (6-8) but rest is SECN or ESPN+.
The ACC is maxed out with the ACC network and their syndication deal. They aren't swapping a tier 2 ACC game without a big dog brand in it which harms their network when a tier 2 Big 12 game draws similarly and the Big 12 schools already maximize subs on ESPN+
Who else is pushing them off? The PAC may not get an ESPN deal at all which frees up more.

Streaming is great right now for fans of the teams that are playing, but it's not quite there for casual viewership of the masses.
I look at streaming similar to electric cars. No doubt we are headed there in the future, but for the majority of us the future for both is 6-9 years from now.

also, when i consult on occasion, people pay me big bucks for the issuance of these profundities.

you are all welcome.

Yep, notable brands don’t get buried. Just doesn’t happen. And we’re a notable brand now. CU will be promoted, seen and paid.
You don't know this. Notable brands don't get buried because to this point, the networks with mass distribution have been in charge of their exposure. Live sports has never been fully relegated to PPV premium subscription services, so saying "notable brands won't get buried" (on streaming) is just more talking out of the ass.

rate of change has exponentially accelerated. adapt, adopt, or get left behind.

i have family members that won't use an atm and pay cash for everything. you can put your head into the sand and pretend/hope that change won't affect you but it has and will.

this is not 1980 and broadcast tv.

Does this 👇 look like 70% to you? And like a **** ton of these games are also on at night.

Its a known fact that the Big12 gets a large portion of their ESPN+ broadcasts done during the non-conference part of the season. Look at last season for example.

One of my dads friends just dropped his Dolphins tickets because they no longer accept cash at the stadium. 😂

Entering in NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB TV and NBA Pass as exhibits 1A, 1B and 1C as proof that live sports can thrive on PPV subscription services.

You’re using the word relegated but it’s the wrong word. I wouldn’t use that word. They’re choosing to take advantage of free market economics and modern technology to connect into people’s homes. And they get paid to do so.

Yes you can watch the home team regionally for free (sometimes) but for out of town folks like myself you need these subscriptions. These brands aren’t buried.

This is exactly the opportunity the Pac-12 Network had time and time again and refused to capitalize on it.

Streaming is going to win that race and the finish line is under five years. I don't see apartment buildings for the most part have installed dedicated EV charging spots at this point. Once that happens, all new vehicles will be EVs. Even the Feds haven't done much of that at where I work at the Denver Federal Center even under the Biden administration that is more pro-EV.

I think this is a bit too far in Pac 12 kool-aid direction. The Pac 12 is not choosing to go the streaming route. If the money was the same, they would be on FOX and ESPN

Those brands aren't primarily on that- those brands are mainly supported by ABC/ESPN, FOX, TNT/TBS, NBC, etc.

Let's not pretend NFL Sunday Ticket is their primary.

We are absolutely going in the streaming route. And it was by choice. The P12 made that decision when we turned down ESPN and Fox a while back. Likely to cash in on the P12N.

Was it the right move? It doesn’t seem like it now but let’s see the cards first before we throw them away.

This commissioner, who I advocated to be fired a few pages back btw, has a background at MLB digital. I would be surprised if our deal doesn’t include some subscription model along with exposure on traditional media (linear concepts) like we see with MLB, NFL, etc.
