CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

MWC schools have a 5 PM PT deadline to commit to staying in the conference. PAC expansion likely done tonight.

From what I'm seeing, UNM has not been mentioned as staying in the MWC...they might be #8 after Utah State.
One thing that works in their favor is that it's easy travel to games in ABQ compared to a lot of other options. With all the non-revenue sports to consider and the need to be frugal on a 3rd tier media deal, that might matter.

Yeah I have been to ABQ multiple times in my life. The UNM athletic facilities are pretty close to the airport.

And to think of it, if the eighth PAC school has "State", having Allstate or State Farm as the conference sponsor would just make so much sense.

FBS conferences must meet a more stringent set of requirements for NCAA recognition than other conferences:[13]

  • A total of at least eight active FBS members.
  • To be counted toward this total, a school must participate in conference play in at least six men's and eight women's sports, including men's and women's basketball, football, and at least two other women's team sports.
    • Each school may count one men's and one women's sport not sponsored by its primary conference toward the above limits, as long as that sport competes in another Division I conference. The men's and women's sports so counted need not be the same sport.[14]

Talk about unlikely partners in this world, the Air Force Academy and University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Love it.

Fighter pilots and strippers unite. Now again, I lived in Colorado Springs a couple years, so I have seen this confederacy before.

Chew on that towel, Jerry Tarkanian fans.

Someone knows what the right decision is, but is feeling bad because they're going to look like an idot for their earlier stance, and their buddy is gonna be pissed at them.

There's politics to be considered. The president of the NV Board of Regents already said that UNLV and UNR isn't a package deal but the current governor is an UNLV alum and a former & respected governor is a UNR alum so we shall see how that goes. TBH, UNR doesn't have the necessary resources to compete in the PAC. They still haven't built a new indoor practice facility and still have a running track at their football stadium.

That makes a ton of sense to me. Eliminate flyover states, save on travel costs, pick large state universities which are highly unlikely to ever get poached & destabilize the conference.

Only one that may not fit all that is UNLV, but they could lose them and elevate UNR in the future if they had to.

UNR could make some geographical sense. As of now they are No-Cal/NW based, except for CSU and SDSU they are NO-Cal/NW based. Vegas is a tough market to turn down for a number of reasons. Historically, UNR was the more established school in Nevada. Until the last 10 years, it had the only medical school, engineering, and legal (School for Judges) options. Now UNLV has both grad schools, but still does not offer engineering. The one thing with UNLV is since Tark left, not great athletic support, Vegas will now they will have 3 new professional sports teams and maybe sports saturation?

MWC might need to see about adding back New Mexico State + another (Cal-Davis, Sac-St? move up). Looks like Air Force committed to MWC ($10M bonus), however they could bolt for the AAC to be with Army and Navy, if it falls apart.

I wonder if the PAC stands stops at 8? Perhaps, they wait to see how Cal and Stanford fit in the ACC. In football, they have been competitive. The other sports entail a bunch of travel, and higher overall costs could an the issue down the line. I sort of see the 4 teams to the B1G as goners for near future, given the huge about of $$ to off-set the other sports travel costs.
