Game Thread: Cincy @ CU—October 26 @ 8:15 PM ESPN

I stand corrected. My seats are on the opposite side of the field and I never saw a replay. So he probably threw it the way he did on purpose, and got the desired result. Except for the **** ref who just wanted to go home.
It's really too bad that CU wasn't able to pull out the KSU game. Think about how the rest of the season would look right now if that had been a win. CU is ranked, controls its own destiny for the Big 12 championship game, and the hype is off the charts.

I'm still hopeful that CU can go on a long winning streak to end the season and get some help along the way. But man that KSU game hurts.

Eh - I agree with most of what you said, but we wouldn't control our own destiny, since we don't play BYU nor ISU, nor do they play each other. If we all finished undefeated in conference, BYU and ISU would be ranked above us by nature of being undefeated overall, and we'd be left out. The way things are shaking out, the Nub game was the one that put us on the outside looking in to begin with, which is ridiculous.

And the preseason ranking / lack there of

I always prefer learning from a win. That game was an inexcusable performance against an inferior team that was prepared for the moment and wanted it more. Disgusting.
I agree completely. I’m just pointing out that we might have learned more from that loss than Nebraska did from the win. They’ve reverted to the norm and we are winning road games by 20+ points.

one interesting aspect to me of the new expanded playoff format is how it reduces the bias a bit. with Coach Mac, it took several good seasons to finally get into a position to be in the mix AND we had to play brutal national schedules. we scheduled monsters to make us relevant, which kinda sucked as we declined.

it is now at least theoretically possible that say byu runs the card this year, gets the first bye and then the upset. the odds are super stacked against them... and us with the 2 losses but it could happen.

We need to start discussing Colton Hood as our second best CB behind Travis. He has been lock down and a ball hawk the past two weeks and better than both Hodge and McKinney, IMO. It's a good problem to have but with Travis returning and seemingly being a lot healthier than last week, I think there's a question about getting Hood in over one of the other guys.

McKinney started off strong then has tailed off a little bit. A good problem to have though

Unless he's practiced in the slot, I dont think starting over Hodge would be an option

Against KSU, I was really upset with Hood for not fighting through a block (just passively accepting it) and allowing a big run down the sideline. But he bounced back strongly from that with a couple ball hawking INTs. There's a lot of talent there.

Feels like Hodge has been the weakest of the four so far, giving up the 2 TDs to Baylor and then the game winner to KSU. This is also relative as I think Hodge is a solid player, but just kind of feels like the other guys have been better.
Hodge has frankly been terrible this year, here are the DB grades per PFF:

Hunter has an 82.8 grade on defense which would be 22nd among CBs.

Hodge has been really disappointing, top 10 CB per PFF last year but seems to get roasted on a near weekly basis.

Word on the street is that Travis is as healthy as he's been in weeks, but his plays on both sides of the ball will be reduced. Expect Hood to play just as many downs at CB as Hunter.

I like all four of the guys at CB. IMO, they all bring different skill sets and play differently. Healthy Travis is by far the best. McKinney is a very sound tackler. Hodge has had his good moments in 444 snaps and I don't have the impression that he is exposed, totally outmatched, or a liability out there. Agree with @The Alabaster Yak, "solid" but others might be playing better. To say he is "terrible," this board would have been having this conversation for weeks. The CFU pick was huge.

The opposing O has to pick on somebody or an area and the defensive responsibilities are vastly different dependent on support of other positions/players. Hodge is playing the slot, so a 1-1 replacement with Hood might not even be an option. Hodge does not appear great against the run, however the Buffs have faced so many running QBs that it could be skewed somewhat. Hood has been very impressive in his 188 snaps and definitely pushing for more playing time. It is nice to see the talent back there. I feel as a unit, they are progressing good, creating some turnovers and improving.

Curious, how does PFF grade our safeties?

Hood was a solid 4* and was likely going to START for Auburn in the SEC, so having him on the bench, and then now having him prove how good he is will be huge.
Hood and McKinney are stud DB's, but are young relative to starts and experience. McKinney would have been the starter at Oklahoma State for sure
We have serious talent in the wings, and it has kind of become tiresome hearing about the absolute "Starters" thing, like not having this guy or that guy is the end of the world like it has always been perceived.
